As the climate change signs become more noticeable, the concern to prioritize sustainability within the AEC industry intensifies. This particularly pertained to issues related to the demand of resources, the excessive consumption of raw materials, and the associated generated waste. Presently, the construction industry is ranked among the industries that are accountable for the global generation of solid waste and energy consumption, leading to detrimental environmental effects. Nonetheless, over the years, construction methods, technological innovations, and building practices have made considerable progress, influenced by a growing emphasis on sustainability, especially in energy conservation and in adopting the Industrialized Production layer of Construction 4.0 (i.e., modular prefabrication, 3D concrete printing, and BIM). The concept of Circular Economy (CE) has been identified as a potential solution to achieve sustainability in building construction through the design, construction, and end-of-life deconstruction processes that enhance the management of waste based on the framework that is related to reducing, reusing, and recycling. Moreover, information and data related to geolocation complement advanced digital technologies by providing a collaborative platform that supports the application of CE as a practical approach to sustainability. Thus, this study will provide a straightforward methodology for developing a model that integrates BIM and sustainable design with Circular Economy’s concept to enhance the sustainability of construction projects to minimize their waste based on various construction methods (i.e., conventional, modular, and 3D concrete printing). The proposed model interrelates tools and data for the evaluation and planning strategies for the construction and deconstruction waste (CDW) management at the design stage, including estimating the quantities of the wasted materials, quantifying the production rates of selected equipment for the waste handling (loading and hauling) at the various stages of a project as well their associated cost. The proposed model will help users to calculate the quantity of construction and deconstruction waste (CDW) during the design of buildings based on their different construction methods at the early stage by using the concept of Design for Deconstruction (DfD);sustainable construction methods;and deconstruction process for waste management, which will lead to the suitable construction method. 展开更多

The sustainable production of green hydrogen via water electrolysis necessitates cost-effective electrocatalysts.By following the circular economy principle, the utilization of waste-derived catalysts significantly promotes the sustainable development of green hydrogen energy.Currently, diverse waste-derived catalysts have exhibited excellent catalytic performance toward hydrogen evolution reaction(HER),oxygen evolution reaction(OER),and overall water electrolysis(OWE).Herein,we systematically examine recent achievements in waste-derived electrocatalysts for water electrolysis. The general principles of water electrolysis and design principles of efficient electrocatalysts are discussed, followed by the illustration of current strategies for transforming wastes into electrocatalysts. Then, applications of waste-derived catalysts(i.e.,carbon-based catalysts, transitional metal-based catalysts, and carbon-based heterostructure catalysts)in HER,OER,and OWE are reviewed successively. An emphasis is put on correlating the catalysts’structure-performance relationship. Also, challenges and research directions in this booming field are finally highlighted. This review would provide useful insights into the design, synthesis, and applications of waste-derived electrocatalysts, and thus accelerate the development of the circular economy-driven green hydrogen energy scheme. 展开更多

During the production of palm oil,a significant amount of waste is generated. However, because of inefficient handling and utilization, these wastes are becoming a larger issue. As a result, one initiative is to use these wastes in the pavement industry as sustainable materials. However, there is still a lack of understanding about the wider incorporation of palm oil waste in asphalt pavement and its performance. This study examines existing literature on the use of various wastes in the pavement industry, including palm oil clinker(POC),palm oil fibre(POF),palm kernel shell(PKS),and palm oil fuel ash(POFA).As a result, this paper presents a systematic review and scientometric investigation of related study publications on many uses of palm oil waste in the asphalt pavement industry and its performance from 2009 to 2022.The VOS viewer application was used to conduct the sciento-metric study analysis. The relationship between interactions detected in co-authored country studies cited sources of co-citation,and the keyword of the co-occurrence and publication source enabled the identification of the research gap.According to the systematic literature review,40%–60% POC can be used to fine aggregate for optimal performance, while 0–100%PKS can be used to replace coarse aggregate. In addition,50%–80% POFA or POC fine(POCF)can be used as a filler replacement,5%–8% POCF or POFA as a bitumen modifier, and 0.3% POF as a stabilizing additive.Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the safety of utilizing wastes with more than 50% CO_(2) emissions can be curtailed with minimal heavy metal leaching and radioactivity levels. The scientometric analysis may encourage researchers to seek out gaps in the literature that will aid in the long-term,multifaceted use of palm oil wastes in the asphalt pavement industry.Furthermore, the study recommends employing and researching the enormous potential of using palm oil waste in the pavement sectors because they are more sustainable and have better performance. However, there are some barriers to using palm oil waste in the asphalt pavement industry, such as a lack of design standards and guidelines, inefficient raw material pro-cessing conversion facilities, and large-scale production equipment. 展开更多

Modern life has contributed both to increasing living standards, increasing comfort and the development of society, but also to increasing the amount of waste that suffocates the planet and threatens the existence of present and future generations.Among the solutions that are sought and that are included in various programs and policies, the concept of circular economy is one that is increasingly discussed when talking about the sustainable development of society. The circular economy implies a reduction of the natural resources consumed due to both recycling and their fair consumption. At the U.E.level the foundations have been laid for policies aimed at waste management to ensure the application of the principles of the circular economy.Considering the importance that the quantification of the indicators for implementing the circular economy have on the elaboration of more efficient policies, but also on the determination of the degree of implementation of this concept,in this paper we intend to analyze the evolution of these indicators from 2010-2019,in the European Union using a customized version of the DPSIR model.Their analysis led us to the conclusion that although important steps have been taken towards the transition to the circular economy, there are still many aspects that need to be improved in order to achieve the proposed objectives through European policies. 展开更多

Shaybah airport runway upgrade construction work was successfully completed in 77 days, four months ahead of the contractual construction execution schedule. The project was honored with the PMI 2020 Project Excellence Award for Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Rubblization of existing concrete pavement was one of the key factors for the early completion and project achievements and awards. Rubblization technology was used to crush existing worn-out Shaybah airport runway concrete pavement, keeping the integrity of underneath sub-grades, and reused as a structurally strong base course to overlay hot mix asphalt. This paper will share the success story behind the process of selection, definition, sourcing, implementation, validation and acceptance of rubblized concrete pavement, and its contribution to the Shaybah Airport Runway Upgrade Project’s achievements. This paper presents Rubblization as a practical, cost effective and sustainable option for repairing deteriorated airfield concrete pavement, and will also demonstrate how the implementation of rubblization of runway pavement contributes to the Saudi Aramco initiative to adopt circular economy principles. The circular economy unlocks economic opportunities, preserves natural resources, and improves environmental performance, an initiative sponsored by Saudi Aramco executive management. 展开更多

The tremendous efforts made in the research field of solid-state Li-ion batteries have led to considerable advancement of this technology and the first market-ready systems can be expected in the near future. The research community is currently investigating different solid-state electrolyte classes(e.g.oxides,sulfides,halides and polymers)with a focus on further optimizing the synthesis and electrochemical performance. However,so far,the development of sustainable recycling strategies allowing for an efficient backflow of critical elements contained in these batteries into the economic cycle and thus a transition from a linear to a circular economy lags behind. In this contribution, resource aspects with respect to the chemical value of crucial materials, which are used for the synthesis of solid-state electrolytes are being discussed.Furthermore,an overview of possible approaches in relation to their challenges and opportunities for the recycling of solid-state batteries with respect to different solid-state electrolyte classes by means of pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and direct recycling/dissolution-based separation processes is given.Based on these considerations and with reference to previous research,it will be shown that different solid-state electrolytes will require individually adapted recycling processes to be suitably designed for a circular economy and that further improvements and investigations will be required. 展开更多

Recycling is viewed as a key component in a circular economy and serves as an ideal solution for promoting sustainability.During the global plastic crisis, plastic recycling practices have been adopted worldwide, leading to the production of various products made from recycled plastics(PRP).Nevertheless,a gap persists between consumption and demand for such products, which is primarily attributed to a lack of comprehension from the consumer perspective.Given the pivotal role consumers play in the adoption of these products, this study explores consumers’intentions to purchase PRP.This is particularly significant in Vietnam, which is an emerging economy aspiring to achieve the objectives of a circular economy and sustainable development.Utilizing an integrated cognitive-emotional framework comprising the Valence Theory and the Norm Activation Model, data from 564 Vietnamese students were gathered and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results show that awareness of consequences is a major driver of consumer purchase intentions, followed by perceived ease of application and monetary incentives. The results also indicate that health concerns have the strongest effect on purchase intention and in the negative side, meaning that the health-related risk is the primary concern for consumers during the decision-making process. This research holds substantial value for academics and managers,as it aids in the theoretical exploration and the formulation of strategies to improve consumer acceptance of PRP. 展开更多

Several Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) member states (OMSs) have updated their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) with the aim of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050. Carbon neutrality requires shifting from a linear carbon economy (LCE) to a circular carbon economy (CCE). Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, including reduction, recycle, reuse, removal, and storage technologies, represent an important strategy for achieving such a shift. Herein, we investigate the effects of CCS technology adoption in six OMSs—namely the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Algeria, and Iraq—by examining their Circular Carbon Economy Index (CCEI) scores, which reflect compliance with CCE-transition policies. Total CCEI, current performance CCEI dimension, and future enabler CCEI dimensions scores were compared among the aforementioned six OMSs and relative to Norway, which was used as a global-high CCEI reference standard. Specifically, CCEI general scope and CCEI oil scope dimension scores were compared. The KSA, Qatar, the UAE, and Kuwait had higher CCEI scores than Algeria and Iraq, reflecting their greater adoption of CCE-transition policies and greater emission-reducing modernization investments. The current performance CCEI scores of Algeria and Iraq appear to be buttressed to some extent by their greater natural carbon sink resources. Based on the findings, we recommend specific actions for OMSs to enhance their CCE transitions and mitigate the negative impacts associated with the associated investments, including: taking rapid practical steps to eliminate carbon oil industry emissions;detailed CCS planning by national oil companies;international cooperation and coordination;and increased investment in domestic CCS utilization infrastructure. 展开更多
