TOptimization of regional landscape pattern is significant for improving function and value of ecosystem, and restraining the expansion of urban layout.Taking Chengdu City for example, this paper applied RS and GIS techniques, landscape indexes and ecological service function evaluation to further analyze the temporal and spatial characteristics of landscape pattern and spatial differences of regional ecological functions, and on this basis, identified the spatial distribution of ecological source lands.Based on the long-term objective of building Chengdu into a modem garden city, this paper applied the accumulative cost distance model and introduced garden city theory to construct regional ecological corridors and ecological nodes, and explored the approaches of optimizing landscape pattern of modem garden city. The results showed that a great deal of arable land has been transferred to construction land in the urbanization;intensity of regional ecological functions showed obvious spatial differences;ecological source lands were mainly distributed in the Longmen Mountain, the Qionglai Mountain, the Changqiu Mountain and the Longquan Mountain;according to actual conditions of the study area, the road ecological corridors, river corridors and agricultural corridors in the layout of "four rings and six radial corridors" were constructed;ecological nodes dominated by intersection, wetland and forest park were formed. This research method and results are significant references for building Chengdu into a modem garden 展开更多

Reconceptualising the construction of Garden Cities in Singapore from the perspective of the history of urban development and urbanization,in conjunction with the development and trends of vertical greening systems. To summarise the principles of development in modern ecosystems in the context of rapid urbanisation and high population density trends:1.Long-term planning and adherence to ecological principles are required for urban construction and development.2.Urban development should insist on controlling and guiding the urbanisation process.3.Strong executive and coordination capacity of the government is an essential force for the development of new cities.4.The cultivation of urban culture is required to be initiated by the government to promote social consensus and directing the power of the public.5.Respond to the trend of the times and make flexible use of science and technology(vertical ecosystems)to solve urban problems. 展开更多

Since the emergence of utopian socialism and other modern urban planning ideas,as well as the proposing of“garden cities”by Howard, modern urban planning theory has experienced a variety of planning ideas, and these ideas play a great role in guiding urban construction and planning. In this century, cities have ushered in many industrial revolutions, and urban life, economy, and ecology have changed greatly.Planning scholars in various countries are actively looking for“medicine”to save cities in the“sick”.In this paper, modern urban planning ideas were sorted out,and how to learn from the current territorial spatial planning that is being compiled around the country was thought about. 展开更多

The feasibility of city living with nature as a way to restore the balance between human uses and natural processes is the focus of this paper about the city of Maringa in Southern Brazil. This urban form, a planned new town founded in 1947 upon a previous, comprehensive British land-development scheme, originally offered a friendly interaction between urban settlement and nature. Hence, this paper outlines how open spaces can be enhanced as an ecological structure, bringing parks, squares, gardens and urban farming into a productive system, both for nature's and for people's sakes. Following a morphological study, the proposed ecological structure will maintain ecological processes within the urban grid and help to preserve historical and social values, by linking a wide variety of natural and restored ecosystems and landscape features. The adoption of this kind of ecological planning will certainly result in an increase of the urban landscape quality, changing actual planning paradigm and preventing the city from environmental quality decrease. 展开更多

Yilan is a successful model of agricultural county transformation during Taiwan's rapid development period. Its urbanization can be considered as an application and evolution of the Garden City concept. With the establishment of a high-quality cluster group and the cultivation of each cluster therein, Yilan has created a healthy, prosperous, and characteristic town agglomeration. Its experiences and development model have great implications for the future construction of small and medium-sized towns in Chinese mainland. 展开更多

China is the largest developing country in the world and a well-known agricultural country. China's urbanization is a subject of great interest, one that has attracted the attention of people throughout the world. Whereas a handful of studies have assessed various aspects of urbanization(urban expansion, urban transition, urban-rural relationships, the spatial changes in urban and rural areas, motivations for sustaining rural places), little is known of how to retain the indigenous character of rural areas in terms of landscape design. In this paper, the authors set out to contribute to this significant gap. They used Chengdu City and Five Golden Flowers(FGF) village in Chengdu's suburbs as case studies. A detailed description of the application of Ebenezer Howard's Garden City vision in Chengdu City was made; the Garden City vision was the key premise for FGF's ecotourism industry and successful conservation of landscapes with indigenous character. An analysis of the post-ecotourism landscape in FGF was accomplished using a typology method. Finally a set of landscape design methods for retaining indigenous character was proposed. The main conclusion of this paper was as follows: rural ecotourism can contribute to maintaining the indigenous character of rapidly urbanizing rural landscapes with the use of appropriate inheritance and renovation ways. The findings here may provide useful information for decision making by urban planners and policy-makers. 展开更多

Ian McHarg’s 1969 book,Design with Nature, was grounded in earlier good practice, especially the European vision of fitting cities into the regional landscape and carrying thorough surveys before planning commenced. The book emerged in the wake of publications that worried about the ability of the earth to support expanding populations and their growing impact on the environment.McHarg argued that ecological design should follow planning based on detailed site information.Although McHarg advised many urban authorities in the USA and other countries, especially in Africa,Asia and Europe, and his ideas had influenced some British new towns, they had little attention in the planning of Milton Keynes,England’s largest new urban settlement, where the initial geological surveys were inadequate, but a successful large tree-planting programhas created a“city in the forest.”McHarg was however closely involved in planning the Nigerian Capital city,Abuja, but his sound master plan was ill-equipped to provide for a nation undergoing post-conflict rebuilding and a local population more concerned with access to land than ecological planning.Nonetheless,McHarg helped us to promote, protect, and preserve urban green spaces.Although teams from different disciplines now work well together, the integrated thinking advocated by McHarg remains sometimes in short supply in local practice. 展开更多
