In the summer of 2023,Zhang Zhizhong’s Reading English Literature to Translate Classical Chinese Poems got published as one of the“Comparative Literature and World Literature Research Series”edited by Cao Shunqing. It presents Zhang’s latest theory and praxis of translating classical Chinese poems. As a kind of rewriting,Zhang’s translations are similar to modern English poems—with creative expressions in contemporary English, the enjambments from free verses, the form of concrete poetry, and the artistic conceptions of classical Chinese poetry, but without the rhymes in original works. How this poetry translation as rewriting generates in the constraints of ideology, poetics, and patronage is to be analyzed in the light of AndréLefevere’s rewriting theory.By examining the non-textual factors related to Zhang’s rewriting,it aims to reveal how this rewriting,as an experimental approach to poetry translation, can shed light on the global circulation of Chinese poetry. 展开更多

With respect to the practice, now popular in the mass media, of substituting a few scholars' individual text readings for widespread reading by the general public, a practice spearheaded by the CCTV program "Lecture Room," we have in this essay come up with the term "second-hand reading of the classics" as a core concept characterizing this phenomenon. The cultural deficiencies symbolized by such "second-hand reading" t'md their expression in three phenomena: first, the audience, eager to become culturally enlightened, find themselves in the passive role of mere receivers of scholars' interpretations of the classics, lacking the role of autonomous readers. Second, the media, motivated by commercial aims, opt for an inappropriate cultural strategy and over-reach their proper role. Third, scholars, taking their orientation from the powerful mass media and following the commercial logic that "the audience is king," settle for a misplaced role and degenerate from being "guides to the best in culture" into merely catering to mass taste. To redress such a situation, our strategy should be to coordinate the universities, public libraries, the media and other public resources in a concerted effort to switch from "second-hand reading" led by the media to self-initiated "autonomous reading," so as to rebuild a public intellectual sphere. 展开更多

Wittgenstein’s mysticism has been one of the focuses of critics and commentators of Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus.Two prevailing readings hold different attitudes towards it.The classical reading commits to the mysticism in the Tractatus, while the therapeutic reading rejects it amid its interpretation of Wittgenstein’s later philosophy. In this paper,I will argue against both by discussing how the Chinese reading understands the Tractatus.I will show that the ineffable in the Tractatus is not any type of mysticism, and that the Chinese reading of the Tractatus is a metaphysical one without any mysticism. 展开更多
