Micro Renewal of Public Spaces in Communities Surrounding Colleges and Universities

The community located around colleges and universities is a place where university students and community residents engage in production and life together.Due to the influence of colleges and universities,these communities have spontaneously formed various other functions,resulting in the disorderly development of the entire space and a lack of effective guidance and control.With the development of colleges and universities,problems within the community are gradually increasing.These factors affect the spatial quality of the communities,as well as the environmental atmosphere of colleges and universities,and cause damage to the spatial environment of the entire region.By sorting out the issues between universities and surrounding communities,the development of universities is linked with that of communities,and a path of cooperation and win-win development is sought.

Relationship between Physico-Chemical Parameters and the Population Distribution of Fresh Water Snails in Amassoma Community and Niger Delta University Campuses,Bayelsa State,Nigeria

Evaluating the presence of fresh water snails in a location is germane in establishing a snail-borne disease control program.The purpose of the study was to see how physicochemical parameters influenced the population distribution of four fresh water snails(Lymnaea natalensis,Bulinus globosus,Biomphalaria pfeiffer,and Melanoides spp.)in the Amassoma community and Niger Delta University between March,2021 and May 2021.Snails were gathered by plucking and scooping them by hand.Snail was identified using standard pictorial keys.Physicochemical of the water of the snail habitat were measured using standard in-situ apparatus across eight sites Physico chemical measured were temperature,pH,conductivity,BOD,turbidity,salinity,and alkalinity.A total of 258 snails were gathered from the eight(8)different sites.In all sites,Lymnaea natalensis was more abundant.Bulinus globosus,Biomphalaria pfeiffer,and Melanoides spp.were among the other snails discovered.Lymnaea had negative correlation with pH,conductivity,BOD,and alkalinity and a positive correlation with salinity and temperature.Bulinus had a positive relationship with pH,salinity,and conductivity and a negative correlation with temperature,turbidity,BOD,and alkalinity.Biomphalaria had a positive correlation with temperature,pH,salinity,turbidity,and alkalinity Melanoides had positive correlations with Temperature,pH,salinity,BOD,and alkalinity and a negative correlation with turbidity and concentration.The was correlation between snails and snails.The presence of these snails suggests that the Amassoma village and Niger Delta University campuses are potential hotspots for a variety of snail-borne diseases.

Tracing the Historical Development of Ethnic Colleges and Universities to Strengthen the Consciousness of the Chinese National Community:Oral Narratives of Southwest Minzu University's 70 Years of Development

"With copper as a mirror,you can wear a crown;with history as a mirror,you can know the rise and fall."This paper takes the 70-year development process of Southwest Minzu University as the carrier,the casting of the Chinese national community as the main line while tracing back to the source,adopts the recording method of"oral history of the school,"interviews witnesses to the development of Southwest Minzu University,including school leaders,teachers,alumni,and other representative figures,records the memories of these parties on the practices of Southwest Minzu University in different periods to cast the awareness of the Chinese national community,and collates them into a text.From the perspective of students,it is important to understand the history of the Chinese national community in the past 70 years since the establishment of Southwest Minzu University,collect and sort out the historical memories of Southwest Minzu University for the education of the Chinese national community,supplement and confirm the school's historical documents,preserve the history,make up for the gap in the history of the school,and at the same time provide a realistic basis for Southwest Minzu University to formulate future development strategies.

Effects of DNA extraction and universal primers on 16S rRNA gene-based DGGE analysis of a bacterial community from fish farming water

Among many reports investigating microbial diversity from environmental samples with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), limited attention has been given to the effects of universal primers and DNA extraction on the outcome of DGGE analysis. In this study, these effects were tested with 16S rRNA gene-based DGGE on a bacterial community from farming water samples. The results indicate that the number of discernable bands in the DGGE fingerprint differed with the primer pairs used; the bands produced by 63f/518r, 341f/926r and 933f/1387r primer pairs were obviously fewer than those by 968f/1401r. Also, we found that each DNA extraction method resulted in different community profiles, reflected by the number and intensity of bands in the DGGE fingerprint. Furthermore, the main bands (theoretically representing dominant bacteria) differed with the extraction methods applied. It is therefore believed that the effects of universal primers and DNA extraction should be given more attention and carefully chosen before performing an investigation into a new environment with DGGE.

Challenges faced by community health nurses to achieve universal health coverage in Myanmar:A mixed methods study

Objective:This study aimed to identify the challenges of community health nurses(CHNs)in delivering effective community health care to achieve universal health coverage(UHC)in Myanmar.Methods:A total of 30 CHNs from township health centers in the northeastern,southern,and western parts of Myanmar were purposefully recruited for quantitative and qualitative interviews.Quantitative data were processed using Microsoft Excel software,and qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis.This study is registered with researchregistry6201.Results:Around the country,30 CHNs uncovered their hardships in implementing primary health care to achieve UHC.Over 90%of the participants agreed to the problem of inadequate health infrastructure,while half of them felt unmotivated when they encountered role conflicts among various cadres of healthcare providers and poor opportunities for career promotion.Major problems arose from the lack of standard professional education at the entry point to community settings because most CHNs did not achieve specialized training in providing public health services.Complications are incapable of evaluating health services for policy-making and the inability to conduct health research to develop evidencebased practices.Insecure work and living conditions,unsupportive community relationships,and undereducation in professional practices were supportive major themes explored by CHNs to achieve a deeper understanding of the barriers to UHC.Not only the health system itself but also the population and other geographical factors have contributed to many challenges to CHNs.Conclusion:Myanmar’s CHNs face many challenges in achieving UHC.These challenges are not confined to the health sector.Some situations,such as geographical barriers and transportation problems,remain persistent challenges for healthcare providers.This study highlights the fact that current health systems should be strengthened by qualified healthcare providers and sufficient infrastructure.Meanwhile,public empowerment plays a critical role in promoting health development.

About the University's Role in the Advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative

Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed to develop the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-centruy Maritime Silk Roadsuccessively in September and October of 2013.As we know,the institutions of higher learning have four major functions,namely,the talent cultivation,scientific research,social service and cultural heritance.These four functions actually play a crucial role inadvancing the Belt and Road Initiative.Under this background,a clear understanding about the university’s role and the feasibleapproaches in developing our country’s Belt and Road Initiative will fully assist to enhance the exchanges and cooperation amonguniversities of countries and regions along the Belt and Road routes,and make concerted efforts to realize the resource sharing,joint cultivation of talents,academic coexistence and cultural resonance,so that we could jointly build a community of higher edu-cation for the Belt and Road.

From the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to Building a Community with a Shared Future for Human Beings--The Past, Present, and Future of International Human Rights Protection

The UN Charter first of all affirmed the basic concept of international protection of human rights and opened up a broad space for international protection of human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is an important document in the development of the international human rights cause. It established a set of international standards for basic human rights, represents the world’s most important consensus on human rights, and contributes greatly to the creation of an international human rights legal system. The important theory put forward by President Xi Jinping to build a Community with a Shared Future for Human Beings, as a Chinese program for today s global major issues, also outlines a new blueprint for national human rights protection and will play a major role in promoting the development of China’s human rights and international human rights protection.

Revisiting the Spirit of the UDHR and Discussing Human Rights Development——Summary of Views from the Seminar Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On December 4,2023,the China Society for Human Rights Studies hosted a seminar in Beijing commemorating the 75^(th) Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.Participants discussed topics such as the significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,China’s theories and practices in respecting and safeguarding human rights,the three global initiatives and global human rights governance,human rights protection in the digital age,and telling Chinese stories of human rights in the new era.The discussions led to a broad consensus and achieved positive results.

Mechanism for Building Child-Friendly Communities Based on Multi-Party Co-Construction:A Case Study on Community Practice in Changsha

Based on the interpretation of the Child-Friendly Cities Initiative(CFCI),this paper empirically demonstrates an effective action mechanism for building child-friendly communities in the policy context of multi-party co-construction by taking urban communities in Changsha as a longterm practice base.Through analyzing the characteristics of roles and action mechanisms of participants in three different types of child-friendly communities,namely Fengquan Gujing Community,Xingfuli Community,and Baziqiang Community in Changsha,it finds that social forces,such as the community Party organization,enterprises,universities,social organizations,elementary and secondary schools of the community,and mass organizations,are"participants"in building child-friendly communities and mobilizing residents(including children).In addition,the three necessary conditions for building a child-friendly community are"core guideline,""awareness consensus,"and"action coordination."All parties involved need to act together based on one platform,with one party playing a central role in connecting the top and the bottom and integrating resources.Among the three communities which have benefited from Changsha’s child-friendly city policy environment,Fengquan Gujing Community stands out in terms of the effectiveness of multi-party co-construction by giving full play to the central role of the community Party organization and the university’s role in improving awareness consensus.

Views on Piracy： Threats to International Peace

The study was conducted to ascertain the views on piracy among marine engineering students and marine officers who had encountered piracy on international waters thereby suggesting threats to international peace. The respondents of the study were 50, specifically distributed to thirty （30） onboard marine engineering students enrolled for the current school year 2014-2015 and twenty （20） marine officers who had experienced piracy at Somalia and other places. The researchers employed quantitative-qualitative research method design. The questionnaire on ＂Piracy at Sea＂ was validated by experts in research, statistics, qualitative research, and maritime international conventions. To test the reliability, this same instrument was pilot-tested among marine officers and students who had been on board international ships. Qualitative data were captured through interviews by using open-ended questions. Frequency count, percentage, and rank were used in this study for descriptive-quantitative statistics. The data were analyzed using appropriate statistics through computer-processed software （SPSS）. Qualitative analysis was employed to determine the views of the respondents on piracy so that mitigation measures were elicited for protection of life at sea leading towards international peace among identified HRAs （high-risk areas）. Results revealed that seafarers were familiar of piracy. They were aware that piracy usually happens in areas like Somalia water sand other threatening territories. To combat piracy, the participants have pointed out the role of the international community in their concerted effort to help seafarers safeguard their lives specifically during these hard times. Somalia also needs to effectively check their organization by whether or not strict implementation of the Anti Piracy Law was being observed. Full knowledge of piracy, techniques for avoiding it, and surviving pirate attacks are necessary among seafarers. Satellite system called shiplock allows shipping companies to monitor location of ships particularly useful during pirate attacks, hijacks, or ship theft. They also install non-lethal electrical fences around a ship＇s perimeter to protect them during these times. IMO regulations require ships to send distress signals and warnings covertly in case of pirate attacks.

Individual environmental behavior： A key role in building lowcarbon communities in China

People＇s social behavior, especially environ- mental behavior, has a great impact on energy consump- tion and carbon emission. This paper explores both categories of individual factors （e.g., values, habits, education, motivation, etc.） and social factors （e.g., institution, infrastructure, encouragement, etc.）, to clarify the correlation between them and their sub-factors. Low- carbon campus is a representative type of low-carbon community which is less difficult to build than other communities because university students are well-edu- cated and, to some extent, are more environmental aware and more willing to change their behaviors. The energy- saving and environment-friendly policies implemented on campus are collected and overviewed in this paper. Additionally, the leaders and employees from the related administration departments are interviewed, and the data of electricity amount and water usage are analyzed and a well-designed questionnaire is handed out in a survey. The survey investigates the environmental knowledge, energy use habits, attitude toward low-carbon transformation, comments on the current institution and so on. The results show that different groups of students have varied levels of environmental knowledge, energy use habits, and attitude toward low-carbon campus management. To improve energy conservation and cut carbon emission radically, advices on building low-carbon community are also proposed including professional curriculums of environ- mental protection, economic initiatives, effect manage- ment, good communications, and sound infrastructures and facilities.

Social innovation for health: engaging communities to address infectious diseases

Universal health coverage emphasises the value of the community-based delivery of health services to ensure that underserved populations have access to care.In areas where infectious diseases are endemic,there are often few resources and limited capacity,and the introduction of effective and accessible strategies require innovation.In this special issue,the contributing authors emphasise the power of local responses to the circumstances that underpin diseases of poverty,and highlight the methodological and programme innovations necessary to support and sustain these responses.Through case studies,the authors illustrate how social innovations can address health inequities,and they identify the role of academics in the Social Innovation in Health Initiative to support this approach.

A Chinese Contribution to Universal History, Viewed from the Future

The world seems to be divided at this point into two camps.If the world is to become a community with a shared future for mankind,then the growing conflict between these two camps must be overcome.China is presently the only country that has a clear,exciting vision for the future.Given its incredible record of success,especially during the last forty years,there is every reason to assume that this goal has overwhelming chances of being reached.The main problem,however,is that the proponents of the liberal system regard the Chinese model as a rival and even adversary to their own system,and they are determined to contain the further rise of China.One of the essential keys to solving the strategic dilemma is to enter into a cultural dialogue around those high points in the cultural tradition of the different cultures which did bring mankind a step further.

Appraisal of the Production-Oriented Approach： An Introduction

The production-oriented approach （POA） has been developed over a decade. It is driven by the need to improve English classroom instruction for university students in China （Wen, 2016）. It is also motivated by the aspiration to enhance the quality of foreign language education in other similar pedagogical contexts outside China. A volume of research has been done by Wen Qiufang and her research team, to formulate the theory of POA and to test its effectiveness in classroom pedagogy （e.g. Wen, 2016, 2015; Yang, 2015; Zhang, 2015）. At the moment, the POA is still at an early stage of theory building and almost all empirical research is done in the Chinese context. In order to improve the quality of this theory and to make it intelligible to the international academic community, a one-day symposium was held in Beijing Foreign Studies University on May 15, 2017. The symposium was entitled ＇The first international forum on innovative foreign language education in China： Appraisal of the POA＇. In the forum, leading experts in applied linguistics were invited to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the POA and the directions for its future development. The symposium was the first attempt for the POA research team to discuss its latest work with international scholars. This Viewpoint section collects the responses of four experts who participated in the symposium, listed in alphabetical order. The collection of articles covers three topics related to the POA： its pedagogical application, its use for teacher training, and its research. Alister Cumming is Professor Emeritus and the former Head of the Centre for Educational Research on Languages and Literacies, University of Toronto, Canada. His article focuses primarily on POA research as an exemplary case of design-based research. Rod Ellis is Research Professor in the School of Education at Curtin University, Australia. He discusses POA in terms of pedagogy, teacher training and research, with both critiques and constructive suggestions. Paul Kei Matsuda is Professor of English and Director of Second Language Writing at Arizona State University, the writed states. He responds to POA from the perspective of an expert researcher and teacher of L2 writing. Charlene Polio is Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Linguistics ＆ Germanic, Slavic, Asian ＆ African Languages atMichigan State University, the writed states. She conceptualises POA as a useful method to address some issues in pre-service teacher development. Overall, the articles in this section are insightful and reader-friendly. They are not only useful for the development of POA in particular, but may also be valuable to a broad range of researchers as they touch upon pertaining issues, as well as emerging topics, in the field of applied linguistics. We therefore find it necessary to make them accessible to a wide readership.
