Thus, tools for designing customized objects in a user-friendly way are in high demand. In this paper, we tackle the problem of generating a collage of patterns along a given boundary, aimed at digital fabrication. We represent the packing space by a pipe-like closed shape along the boundary and use ellipses as packing elements for computing an initial layout of the patterns. Then we search for the best matching pattern for each ellipse and construct the initial pattern collage in an automatic manner. To facilitate editing the collage, we provide interactive operations which allow the user to adjust the layout at the coarse level. The patterns are fine-tuned based on a spring–mass system after each interaction step. After this interactive process, the collage result is further optimized to enforce connectivity. Finally, we perform structural analysis on the collage and enhance its stability, so that the result can be fabricated. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we show results fabricated by 3D printing and laser cutting.展开更多

In this study, we performed apatite fission track (AFT) thermochronology to unravel the timing of thrusting and exhumation for the Laolongshan-Shengrenqiao Fault (LSF) in the southern Ordos Basin. The AFT ages from opposite sides of the LSF reveal a significant latest Triassic to Early Jurassic time-temperature discontinuity across this structure. Thermal modeling reveals at the latest Triassic to Early Jurassic, a ~50~C difference in temperature between opposite sides of the LSF currently exposed at the surface. This discontinuity is best interpreted by an episode of thrusting and exhumation of the LSF with -1.7 km of net vertical displacement during the latest Triassic to Early Jurassic. These results, when combined with earlier thermochronological studies, stratigraphic contact relationship and tectono-sedimentary evolution, suggest that the southern Ordos Basin experienced coeval intense tectonic contraction and developed a north-vergent fold-and-thrust belt. Moreover, the southern Ordos Basin experienced a multi-stage differential exhumation during Mesozoic, including the latest Triassic to Early Jurassic and Late Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous thrust-driven exhumation as well as the Late Cretaceous overall exhumation. Specifically, the two thrust-driven exhumation events were related to tectonic stress propagation derived from the latest Triassic to Early Jurassic continued compression from Qinling Orogenic Collage and the Late Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous intracontinental orogeny of QinUng Orogenic Collage, respectively. By contrast, the Late Cretaceous overall exhumation event was related to the collision of an exotic terrain with the eastern margin of continental China at -100 Ma.展开更多

Yet there has never been such an epoch as our time in which using pre-existing material, melodic quotation in particular, features so extensively in works of many of the composers. The aim of this paper is to investigate how the use of quoted tunes in a musical piece operates in an interwoven complex where time and space are of the essence. A quote is able to oscillate perpetually between one’s mental worlds of the memorable past and the imaginative present when it is highlighted enough to be recognizable from its surrounding context. Upon interpreting the use of quotation in various contexts, the aesthetic object, I argue, is the shift from original to quoted music, and vice versa. And listeners can respond aesthetically to the quotation itself even without knowledge of its provenance and textual or referential content.展开更多

In...Holo Taiwan Residents Opera Troupe has produced a series of intercultural performances in Taiwan Residents Opera since the troupe adapted Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol's (1809-1852) The Government Inspector in 1996. In fact, there is a huge controversy over these intercultural performances which fuse western drama with traditional Taiwan Residents performing art because such a kind of theatrical hybridity lacks the spirit of the original and damages the aesthetics of native performing art practice. In 2002, Holo adapted William Shakespeare's Hamlet into a six-hour-long performance, Tai Tzu Fu Chou (The Prince's Vengeful Plan), which the troupe tried to explore new source for traditional Taiwan Residents Opera and expected to bring something new to Taiwan Residents audience. However, The Prince's Vengeful Plan is considered "cultural collage" as well as an unsuccessful intercultural performance. Besides, The Prince's Vengeful Plan is accused to blaspheme Shakespeare because the performance merely maintains the frame of the original and distorts the spirit of the original. According to Rustom Bharucha, the most problematic aspect of intercultural performance is "de-historicizing tendency", and such a condition explains why Holo's The Prince's Vengeful Plan cannot transcend the original. In order to detect the problems of intercultural adaptation in Holo's The Prince Vengeful Plan, we cover the related issues in three aspects: (1) to discuss the development of Taiwan Residents Opera in Taiwan; (2) to explore the cultural conflicts when the text of the source culture is adapted into the performance of the target culture; and (3) to see how and why the spirit and aesthetics of Shakespeare's verses in Hamlet are distorted in Holo's theatrical adaptation. After that, we expect to conclude the impossibility of adapting Shakespeare's play into traditional Taiwan Residents Opera in the case of Holo's The Prince's Vengeful Plan.展开更多

And listeners can respond aesthetically to the quotation itself even without knowledge of its provenance and textual or referential content.
文摘iot(1924)was a remarkable artistic achievement.Following collages in the works of Picasso,Braque, and Gris, publisher Bill Bird created a collage of newspaper headlines on the cover of that slim volume that linked to the collage of vignettes within that Hemingway wrote. Both depicted a world losing traditional values, torn by war and despair and increasing commercialism.Subsequent Hemingway book covers by Scribners,at least until The Old Man and the Sea,emphasized sales over art and had little to do with content.
文摘Holo Taiwan Residents Opera Troupe has produced a series of intercultural performances in Taiwan Residents Opera since the troupe adapted Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol's (1809-1852) The Government Inspector in 1996. After that, we expect to conclude the impossibility of adapting Shakespeare's play into traditional Taiwan Residents Opera in the case of Holo's The Prince's Vengeful Plan.
