The Application Study on Genre-based Approach in the English Exposition Writing Teaching for Professional College English Major Students

The previous studies show that the major problems faced by the students in writing can be classified into two categories, that is, they don't know"what to write"and"how to write". The researche... The previous studies show that the major problems faced by the students in writing can be classified into two categories, that is, they don't know"what to write"and"how to write". The researchers found that the specific problems existing in their writings are identified as poor content, incomplete generic structure and misuse of cohesive devices. Therefore, on the basis of the previous studies, this study attempts to use Martin's genre theory to resolve the existed problems of the Professional College English major's students in writing and enhance students' discourse writing ability. Meanwhile, this study tries to answer the following questions:(1) Compared with the traditional writing teaching methods, whether the genre-based writing method has a significant effect to improve students' writing skills;(2) Whether the genre-based writing method is possible to increase students' interest in writing. The experimental result and the questionnaire show that genre-based approach in ESL writing teaching really can improve students' writing achievement and enhance students' interest in English writing. 展开更多

There has been some concerned raised that students that come to university from college may not be academically (or emotionally) prepared for the faster-paced university programs. This research, which was funded by an Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer Faculty Fellowship, examines the academic performance of students in computer-related disciplines with a focus on comparing students who come to a university through a formalized college-to-university transfer agreement relative to students who enroll directly from high school. The comparisons will be based on metrics such as graduation rates, course failure rates, overall averages, course-level averages, and course-subject averages.</span> </div> 展开更多

Investigation and Analysis of the Oral Expression Competency Among Students in Second-tier Universities:Based on China's Standards of English Language Ability

By adopting quantitative analysis,based on the statements for oral scale of CSE(China Standards of English)level five,this paper investigated the current status,common difficulties and control factors on oral English competency of nonEnglish majors in second-tier universities,which was conducted using questionnaires that includes six dimensions of language expression:accuracy,complexity,coherence,fluency,appropriateness,and flexibility.The results showed that:(i)the overall oral English competency of college non-English majors hasn't met the statements of CSE level five;(ii)female students significantly outperformed male students,and business majors students significantly outperformed those in liberal arts majors who were significantly better than those in science majors;(iii)there was no significant difference between grades;(iv)the flexibility,coherence and accuracy of language expression almost reached the standard grade,but the common core difficulties faced by the students were mainly in pronunciation,scope oflanguage expression,fluency and appropriateness.Unclear goals,less practice and poor vocabulary were major impact factors.The research is helpful for strengthening students?knowledge on their own oral English competency as well as adjusting their oral practice objectives,thereby shedding light on students5 actual oral English proficiency and helping to clarify and refine the teaching objectives of speaking and promote the effective practice of oral English as well as the rational application of CSE. 展开更多

家庭背景与大学生教育成就:基于院校和专业的异质性分析

在我国高等教育快速地从精英化过渡到普及化的过程中,家庭背景影响大学生教育成就的异质性需要得到充分讨论。本文基于全国高校毕业生就业状况抽样调查数据,首先通过实证分析发现较强家庭背景对大学生教育成就获得仍具有显著的正向影响... 在我国高等教育快速地从精英化过渡到普及化的过程中,家庭背景影响大学生教育成就的异质性需要得到充分讨论。本文基于全国高校毕业生就业状况抽样调查数据,首先通过实证分析发现较强家庭背景对大学生教育成就获得仍具有显著的正向影响。相较于以往研究将高校学生视作一个同质化的整体,本文在院校层次和专业类别上进行区分,发现家庭背景对大学生教育成就获得的影响在院校层次和专业类别上具有显著的异质性特征。具体而言,较强家庭背景对大学生教育成就获得的正向影响在普通本科高校强于双一流高校,在社会科学类专业强于理工农医和人文科学类专业。本文最后通过质性研究讨论内部激励和外部支持这两个异质性的影响机制,可为提升高等院校精准育人工作的实效性和针对性提供参考。 展开更多
