The control group was given mesalazine sustained-release tablets orally, while the treatment group was given Baitou Weng Decoction and mesalazine sustained-release tablets orally. The treatment period was 30 days and the patients were followed up for 3 months. After treatment, the clinical efficacy, quality of life, immune function and serum inflammatory factors of the two groups were observed. Results: The effective rate of treatment group (90.47%) was higher than that of control group (73.81%) (P<0.05);compared with before treatment, the scores of inflammatory bowel disease quality of life questionnaire scale in both groups were significantly improved (P<0.05), and the difference between the two groups was significant (P<0.05);after treatment, the plasma CD4+/CD8+ ratio and NK+ levels in both groups were significantly higher than those before treatment (P<0.05), and the treatment group was changed. The serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-17 and interleukin-23 were significantly decreased in both groups after treatment (P<0.05), and the improvement was more significant in the treatment group (P<0.05). No significant adverse reactions were observed in the treatment group. Conclusions: Modified Baitou Weng Decoction combined with mesalazine in the treatment of heat-toxic and incandescent ulcerative colitis can significantly improve the clinical efficacy, improve the quality of life of patients, effectively regulate the expression level of serum inflammatory factors in ulcerative colitis patients, promote the recovery of patients' immune function, and have high drug safety.展开更多

In recent years, the increased knowledge of complex pathophysiological processes underlying IBD has resulted in development of a number of newer pharmaceutical agents like low-molecular-weight heparin, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics and innovative formulations such as high-dose, once-daily multi-matrix mesalamine, which are designed to minimize the inflammatory process through inhibition of different targets. Optimization of delivery of existing drugs to the colon using the prodrug approach is another attractive alternative that has been utilized and commercialized for 5-aminosalicylic acid (ASA) in the form of sulfasalazine, balsalazide, olsalazine and ipsalazine, but rarely for its positional isomer 4-ASA - a well-established antitubercular drug that is twice as potent as 5-ASA against IBD, and more specifically, ulcerative colitis. The present review focuses on the complete profile of 4-ASA and its advantages over 5-ASA and colon-targeting prodrugs reported so far for the management of IBD. The review also emphasizes the need for reappraisal of this promising but unexplored entity as a potential treatment option for IBD.展开更多
