Forty-seven Cases of Gonitis Treated by A Combined Therapy of Chinese Drugs and Acupuncture

Osteoarthritis, a nonspecific inflammatory lesion, is a commonly seen joint disease. Clinically, it is mainly characterized by arthralgia, swelling, and motor impairment. Since the knee joint is the load-bearing joint of the human body, and is susceptible to trauma, gonitis tends to have the highest morbidity in the four limbs, which manifests itself arthritis of patella and femur at the early stage; narrowness or disappearance of the medial joint space at the mid stage; and damage of the cartilage accompanied with flexion deformity at the late stage. In recent years, based on the experience of Prof. Cao Yiming, the author has treated 47 cases of gonitis by combined use of Chinese drugs and acupuncture, and obtained satisfactory therapeutic results as reported in the following.

COMBINED TREATMENT OF HEBETIC SCANTY MENSTRUATION WITH ACUPUNCTURE AND DRUGS

According to a random distribution table, 60 cases of scanty menstruation patients were evenly divided into 3 groups: A) estrin (n = 20), B) acupuncture (n = 20), and C) acupuncture +estrin (n = 20) for comparing their therapeutic effect. Results showed that after treatment, 5 cases in estrin group, 12 cases in acupuncture group and 14 cases in acupuncture + estrin group respectively had an ovulation response. Statistical analysis displayed significant differences between acupuncture group or acupuncture + estrin group and estrin group. (P < 0.05, P <0.05 ); and between acupuneture and acupuncture + estrin groups in the estradiol level of the early phase of follicles in patients with ovulation and without ovulation (P < 0. 05, P < 0.01 ). The fact indicates a close interrelation between acupuncture-induced ovulatory effect and the estradiol level of the patient’s body.

COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF ACUPUNCTURE AND WESTERN MEDICINES FOR TREATMENT OF PERIPHERAL FACIAL PALSY

Subjective: To observe the therapeutic effect of acupuncture in treatment of acute peripheral facial paralysis. Methods: A total of 80 cases of facial palsy were randomly divided into acupuncture group (n=50) and Western medicine (control) group (n=30). In acupuncture group, Cuanzhu (BL 2), Sibai (ST 2), Yangbai (GB 14), etc. were punctured, combined with TDP radiation, cupping or administration of Chinese medicinal herbs according to the concrete situations. Acupuncture treatment was given once daily, with 6 days being a therapeutic course, continuously for 4 courses. In control group, patients were treated with intravenous injection of “energy mixture”, dexamethasone, compound Danshen injectio, etc.. Results: After treatment, in acupuncture group, of the 50 cases, 48 were cured and 2 had improvement, with the effective rate being 100%; among them, 12 cases were cured in 7 days, 23 cured in 8～14 days, 10 cured in 15～21 days and 3 cured in 22～28 days. In control group, of the 30 cases, 19 were cured, 8 had improvement and 3 had no apparent changes, with the effective rate being 90%. Of the 19 cured cases, 5 were cured within 8～14 days, 10 cured in 15～21 days and 4 cured in 22～28 days. Conclusion: In treatment of acute periphery facial palsy, acupuncture is obviously superior to Western medicines in the therapeutic effect and cure duration.

Forty-three Cases of Acute Lumbar Sprain Treated by Acupuncture Plus Kinesitherapy

Acute lumbar sprain is commonly encountered among the young and middle-aged. It often occurs at the lower part of the back, which seriously hinders the daily life and work of the patients because of the severe pain. The author has treated 43 cases of acute lumbar sprain by needling Weizhong (BL 40), Houxi (SI 3) and Yaotongdian (EX-UE7) plus kinesitherapy and obtained satisfactory therapeutic results. Treatment of Phlegm-and Heat-induced Insomnia by Acupuncture in 120 Cases

Clinical DataThe 120 cases in this series were outpatients suffering from insomnia due to interior-stirring by phlegm-heat, ranging in age from 28 to 67 years. They were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group.

Clinical observation of acupuncture combined with medication for mild-to-moderate depression

Objective:To discuss the clinical efficacy and plausible mechanism of Tiao Yang Qu Xie(regulating Yang to eliminate pathogenic factors)needling method plus paroxetine in treating mild-to-moderate depression.Methods:Sixty-six patients with mild-to-moderate depression were divided into an observation group and a control group using the random number table method,each consisting of 33 cases.Another 25 healthy subjects were recruited as a healthy group.The control group took oral paroxetine tablets for treatment,and the observation group received additional acupuncture treatment 3 times weekly.Both groups underwent 4-week treatment.Before treatment,after 2-week and 4-week treatment,and 2 weeks after treatment(follow-up),the patients were assessed using the Hamilton depression scale-17-item(HAMD-17),self-rating depression scale(SDS),self-rating anxiety scale(SAS),and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)pattern element identification scale for depression.The two groups each randomly contributed 25 cases to detect the protein content of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)before treatment and after 4-week treatment,and compared with the healthy group.Results:After 2-week treatment,the markedly effective and total effective rates were significantly higher in the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05);after 4-week treatment,the observation group significantly surpassed the control group in comparing the markedly effective rate(P<0.05).After 2 and 4 weeks of treatment and at the follow-up,the HAMD-17 total score and sleep disorder factor score were lower in the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05);the anxiety-somatic score was lower in the observation group than in the control group after 2-week treatment(P<0.05).After 2 and 4 weeks of treatment and at the follow-up,the observation group was lower than the control group in comparing the scores of SDS,SAS,and TCM pattern element identification scale for depression(P<0.05).After 4-week treatment,the observation group had an increased serum BDNF protein content,higher than that in the control group(P<0.05)and had no significant difference compared to the healthy group(P>0.05).Conclusion:Compared to the use of oral paroxetine alone,acupuncture plus paroxetine can produce more significant efficacy in treating mild-to-moderate depression and act faster in improving sleep disorder and anxiety-somatic symptoms;increasing the serum BDNF protein content may be a part of the mechanism underlying its antidepressant actions.

CLASSIFICATION, PROGRESSIVE STAGE AND COMBINED TREATMENT OF PERIPHERAL FACIAL PARALYSIS

A combined method using acupuncture,Chinese herbs and Western medicine inthe treatment of peripheral facial paralysis is formulated from the author’s clinical experience duringmore than 20 years period.Two stages and four types are divided separately according to the develop-ment of the disorder and the lesion level of the facial nerve。which are different from the classificationsin the common textbooks.Out of the whole series of 718 cases,99.58％of the patients got cured andno one had been treated ineffectively.

TREATMENT OF 33 CASES OF APOPLETIC HEMIPLEGIA BY COMBINED ACUPUNCTURE THERAPIES

In the present study,33 cases of apopletic hemiplegia were treated with combinedtherapies of scalp-,body-acupuncture and restoring consciousness needling;besides,electroacupuncture（EA）stimulation was added.The treatment was given once daily,six days constitutea therapeutic course with an interval of 1—2 days between courses.After 5 courses of treatment,10cases（30.30％）were cured,15（45.45％）markedly effective,7（21.21％）effective and 1（3.03％）was ineffective.The total effective rate was 96.96％.

DEVELOPMENT ON CLINICAL TREATMENT OF CONSTIPATION WITH ACUPUNCTURE AND MOXIBUSTION

In the present paper, the authors review recent developmarrt of clinical treatment of constipation with acupunctire and moxibustion from ① body acupuncture therapy including special needling manipulations, as Ziwu Daojiu Needling, etc. and acupoint combination,②electrcacupunture therapy, ③ scalp-acupuncture therapy, ④ auricular acupuncture therapy, ⑤ needleembedding and acupoint-catgut-embedding therapies, ⑥ acupoint-application therapy, ⑦ combinged acupuncture aud medication therapy, ⑧ other therapies such as cupping therapy and holo-therapy, and ⑨ considerations about the action of acupuncture in the treatmnt of constipation and its prospect. Up to now, researches on the effect of acupuncture in treating constipation are seldom seen, thus, much attention should be paid about this by clinical and experimental researchers.

One Case of Diabetes Nephropathy Stage V, Combined Valvular Disease, Total Heart Failure with Diabetes Foot Gangrene

The patient was found to have 4+urine sugar by physical examination 14 years ago and was treated with oral hypoglycemic drugs. Insulin was injected intramuscularly nine years ago. Two and a half years ago, it was found that the color of the thumb, index and middle toe of the left foot became black. He went to a third-class hospital in Beijing and was diagnosed as “diabetes foot”. He was treated with “balloon dilation of lower limb blood vessels of diabetes foot”. Half a year ago, the third toe on the right side was broken and treated in the hospital again. “Popliteal artery stent implantation” was given for the diagnosis of “double kidney insufficiency, diabetes foot, left heart failure, combined heart valve disease”, “Hemofiltration therapy” and anti-inflammatory, amino acid supplementation, kidney function protection, anticoagulation, anemia correction and other treatments. Later, he went to our hospital and was diagnosed by the TCM diagnosis: category of consumptive disease, toe or finger gangrene (syndrome/pattern of qi and yin deficiency). Western medicine diagnosed: stage V of diabetes nephropathy, type II diabetes foot gangrene, combined with heart valve disease, hypoalbuminemia, double kidney cyst, moderate anemia, pleural effusion, hyperkalemia, pulmonary infection, and total heart failure. The patient was treated by the Qi-acupuncture therapy of TCM in combination with Chinese and Western medicine Medical treatment made the patient significantly better and discharged.

An Approach to the Integration of Acupuncture and Drug

Integration of acupuncture and drug is a therapeutic method in which acupuncture treatment and pharmacotherapy are synchronously performed in the same patient to prevent and treat the disease. Its importance can be traced back to Sun Simiao (581-682 A.D.), a prominent physician of China's Tang Dynasty. He pointed out that: A physician who masters only acupuncture treatment in clinical practice but not moxibustion, or masters only moxibustion treatment but not acupuncture is not a skillful doctor; and a physician who is only aware of the application of acupuncture and moxibustion but ignorant of pharmacotherapy, or is only aware of pharmacotherapy but ignorant of the application of acupuncture and moxibustion also should not be a skillful one. Not only should a skillful doctor have the knack of applying acupuncture and moxibustion, but he should have the knack at pharmacotherapy in treating diseases. Each of acupuncture and moxibustion, and drug has its strong points. Therefore, both of them should be used simultaneously, thus bringing the strong points of both individuals into full play and offsetting their weaknesses so as to obtain a satisfactory therapeutic effect. With the development of modern medicine and introduction of advanced technology, there have been brilliant developments in the method and applied range of integration of acupuncture and drug, particularly in the studies on combined anesthesia induced by using acupuncture and drug, and administering drug by acupoint. All these have provided us a ground to further probe into the mechanism underlying the integration of acupuncture and drug.

Electro-acupuncture Combined with Plum-blossom Needle Tapping for Treatment of Supraorbital Neuritis—A Clinical Observation of 59 Cases
