Cosmic radiation has several effects on the On-Board Processing(OBP)platform in satellite communications systems,and Single Event Upsets(SEUs)are one of its most important effects.In order to protect the Finite Impuls...Cosmic radiation has several effects on the On-Board Processing(OBP)platform in satellite communications systems,and Single Event Upsets(SEUs)are one of its most important effects.In order to protect the Finite Impulse Response(FIR)filters against SEU,this paper proposes a novel Residue Number(RN)-based method.The proposed method applies the transpose form of the FIR filter to avoid the fault missing caused by SEU on shift registers.It also adjusts the input intelligently to avoid the fault missing caused by SEU on the filter coefficients.After all the fault missing events are avoided,the modulus can be minimised to achieve the minimum overhead.Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the noise introduced by the input adjustment is negligible.Fault injection shows that the fault missing rate of the proposed method is zero.Finally,FPGA implementation shows that the overhead of the proposed method is approximately 75% of Triple Modular Redundancy,and is only 1%-2% higher than that of the traditional RN-based design.展开更多

However, improper design of the hybrid system may cause severe interference between cellular and D2D links. In this paper, we consider transceiver design for the system employing multiple antennas to mitigate the interference. The precoder and decoder matrices are optimized in terms of sum mean squared error(MSE) and capacity, respectively. For the MSE minimization problem, we present an alternative transceiver optimization algorithm. While for the non-convex capacity maximization problem, we decompose the primal problem into a sequence of standard convex quadratic programs for efficient optimization. The evaluation of our proposed algorithms for performance enhancement of the entire D2D integrated cellular system is carried out through simulations.展开更多

This paper studies a federated edge learning system,in which an edge server coordinates a set of edge devices to train a shared machine learning(ML)model based on their locally distributed data samples.During the dist...This paper studies a federated edge learning system,in which an edge server coordinates a set of edge devices to train a shared machine learning(ML)model based on their locally distributed data samples.During the distributed training,we exploit the joint communication and computation design for improving the system energy efficiency,in which both the communication resource allocation for global ML-parameters aggregation and the computation resource allocation for locally updating ML-parameters are jointly optimized.In particular,we consider two transmission protocols for edge devices to upload ML-parameters to edge server,based on the non-orthogonal multiple access(NOMA)and time division multiple access(TDMA),respectively.Under both protocols,we minimize the total energy consumption at all edge devices over a particular finite training duration subject to a given training accuracy,by jointly optimizing the transmission power and rates at edge devices for uploading ML-parameters and their central processing unit(CPU)frequencies for local update.We propose efficient algorithms to solve the formulated energy minimization problems by using the techniques from convex optimization.Numerical results show that as compared to other benchmark schemes,our proposed joint communication and computation design significantly can improve the energy efficiency of the federated edge learning system,by properly balancing the energy tradeoff between communication and computation.展开更多

However, Prolog is not suitable to develop many kinds of components, such as data acquisition and task scheduling, which are also crucial. To make the best use of the advantages and bypass the disadvantages, it is attractive to integrate Prolog with programs developed by other languages. In this paper, an IPC-based method is used to integrate backward chaining inference implemented by Prolog into applications or embedded systems. A Prolog design pattern is derived from the method for reuse, whose principle and definition are provided in detail. Additionally, the design pattern is applied to a target system, which is free software, to verify its feasibility. The detailed implementation of the application is given to clarify the design pattern. The design pattern can be further applied to wide range applications and embedded systems and the method described in this paper can also be adopted for other logic programming languages.展开更多
The connection of resources, data, and knowledge through communication technology plays a vital role in current collaborative design methodologies and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, as these elements ac...The connection of resources, data, and knowledge through communication technology plays a vital role in current collaborative design methodologies and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, as these elements act as channels for information and meaning. Despite significant advances in the area of PLM, most communication tools are used as separate services that are disconnected from existing development environments. Consequently, during a communication session, the specific elements being discussed are usually not linked to the context of the discussion, which may result in important information getting lost or becoming difficult to access. In this paper, we present a method to add synchronous communication functionality to a PLM system based on annotated information embedded in the CAD model. This approach provides users a communication channel that is built directly into the CAD interface and is valuable when individuals need to be contacted regarding the annotated aspects of a CAD model. We present the architecture of a new system and its integration with existing PLM systems, and describe the implementation details of an annotation-based video conferencing module for a commercial CAD application.展开更多
Practicing designers and design students across multiple fields were surveyed to measure preference and perception of traditional hand and digital tools to determine if common biases for an individual tootset are real...Practicing designers and design students across multiple fields were surveyed to measure preference and perception of traditional hand and digital tools to determine if common biases for an individual tootset are realized in practice. Significant results were found, primarily with age being a determinant in preference of graphic tools and processes; this finding demonstrates a hard line between generations of designers. Results show that white there are strong opinions in tools and processes, the realities of modern business practice and production gravitate towards digital methods despite a traditional tool preference in more experienced designers. White negative stigmas regarding computers remain, younger generations are more accepting of digital toots and images, which should eventually lead to a paradigm shift in design professions.展开更多
