This article reports on an empirical study investigating what and how two college-level American learners of Mandarin Chinese developed their own understanding of the Chinese complimenting speech act while participating in a 7-week intensive language study abroad program. A case study approach was adopted with a focus on participants' self-reflection data supplemented with the researcher's observation data to unpack each participant's pragmatic developmental process throughout the program. Guided by sociocultural theory, the study uncovered the dynamic, complex and highly individualized developmental process each participant experienced. The findings revealed that Chinese people's special treatment of the two American students provided more constraints than opportunities for them to acquire Chinese complimenting. However, the learners' own motivation and approaches to learning also significantly shaped their learning process and outcomes. Pedagogical suggestions for Chinese pragmatic development in study abroad contexts are provided. 展开更多

Having long been recognized as the primary research area where the politeness and impoliteness phenomena are examined, studies of speech acts including compliment, thanks and apologies provide insights into politeness norms in different speech communities, and seek to define social variables that conduce to impoliteness in the intercultural contexts. This paper is intended to present a sophisticated illumination of how the concepts of impoliteness differentiate between cultures, and further discuss distinct cultural expectations and social values shared by western and eastern societies. 展开更多

A backhanded compliment is a compliment on its appearance, but its implication meaning may be an insult. The reason why speakers do not adopt direct insult instead of using this kind of ambiguous expression is that backhanded compliments can serve two main social functions such as: being humor and acting as a face-saving strategy to mute the meaning of insult. 展开更多

In all the culture of the world, compliment is always one kind of communicative applications, which is quite frequently used, we see compliment both in China and the United States. By reason of the culture difference of different countries, Chinese and American often have diverse responses and attitudes toward the compliment, which directly cause their different responses when they make reactions to the compliment.[1]From study, we see the difference is mainly in the following, on one hand, the Chinese are often very implicative toward the compliment and they respect all other people while they are quite humble when in the communication, on the other hand, the American are much more public, although they also respect other people, they are not keeping humble at the same time. 展开更多

The present study investigated the effects of explicit metapragmatic instruction on foreign language learners' performance of compliment responses (CRs). Eighty-two non-English major students participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to two groups, an experimental group that received explicit metapragmatic instruction on compliment responses and a control group that did not. A pretest-posttest research design was adopted. The data were collected through a written discourse completion task (WDCT) with six scenarios concerning the topics of appearance, performance, and personality. The results revealed that learners who received explicit instruction dramatically decreased their use of Accept strategy and increased Combination (CB) strategy at the macro level; more specifically, a decrease in Appreciation and an increase in Accept + Accept at the micro level. The learners of the control group made little progress in their performance. The study sheds light on pragmatics learning in an EFL setting and provides implications for pragmatics pedagogy. 展开更多
