In order to provide more insights into the damage propagation composite wind turbine blades(blade)under cyclic fatigue loading,a stiffness degradation model for blade is proposed based on the full-scale fatigue testing of a blade.A novel non-linear fatigue damage accumulation model is proposed using the damage assessment theories of composite laminates for the first time. Then,a stiffness degradation model is established based on the correlation of fatigue damage and residual stiffness of the composite laminates. Finally,a stiffness degradation model for the blade is presented based on the full-scale fatigue testing. The scientific rationale of the proposed stiffness model of blade is verified by using full-scale fatigue test data of blade with a total length of 52.5 m.The results indicate that the proposed stiffness degradation model of the blade agrees well with the fatigue testing results of this blade. This work provides a basis for evaluating the fatigue damage and lifetime of blade under cyclic fatigue loading. 展开更多

A damage assessment methodology based on the Hashin failure theory for glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP)composite blade is proposed. The typical failure mechanisms including the fiber tension/compression and matrix tension/compression are considered to describe the damage behaviors. To give the flapwise and edgewise loading along the blade span, the Blade Element Momentum Theory(BEMT) is adopted. In conjunction with the hydrodynamic analysis, the structural analysis of the composite blade is cooperatively performed with the Hashin damage model. The damage characteristics of the composite blade, under normal and extreme operational conditions, are comparatively analyzed. Numerical results demonstrate that the matrix tension damage is the most significant failure mode which occurs in the mid-span of the blade. The blade internal configurations including the box-beam, Ibeam, left-C beam and right-C beam are compared and analyzed. The GFRP and carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) are considered and combined. Numerical results show that the I-beam is the best structural type. The structural performance of composite tidal turbine blades could be improved by combining the GFRP and CFRP structure considering the damage and cost-effectiveness synthetically. 展开更多

This study develops a method for the full-size structural design of blade, involving the optimal layer thickness configuration of the blade to maximize its bending stiffness using a genetic algorithm.Numerical differentiation is employed to solve the sensitivity of blade modal frequency to the layer thickness of each part of blade. The natural frequencies of first-order flapwise and edgewise modes are selected as the optimal objectives.Based on the modal sensitivity analysis of all design variables, the effect of discretized layer thickness on bending stiffness of the blade is explored, and 14 significant design variables are filtered to drive the structural optimization. The best solution predicts an increase in natural frequencies of first-order flapwise and edgewise blade modes by up to 12%and 10.4%,respectively.The results show that the structural optimization method based on modal sensitivity is more effective to improve the structural performance. 展开更多

Modeling of pre-twisted composite rotor blades is very complicated not only because of the geometric non-linearity, but also because of the cross-sectional warping and the transverse shear deformation caused by the anisotropic material properties. In this paper, the geometrically exact nonlinear modeling of a generalized Timoshenko beam with arbitrary cross-sectional shape, generally anisotropic material behavior and large deflections has been presented based on Hodges' method. The concept of decomposition of rotation tensor was used to express the strain in the beam. The variational asymptotic method was used to determine the arbitrary warping of the beam cross section. The generalized Timoshenko strain energy was derived from the equilibrium equations and the second-order asymptotically correct strain energy. The geometrically exact nonlinear equations of motion were established by Hamilton's principle. The established modeling was used for the static and dynamic analysis of pre-twisted composite rotor blades, and the analytical results were validated based on experimental data. The influences of the transverse shear deformation on the pre-twisted composite rotor blade were investigated. The results indicate that the influences of the transverse shear deformation on the static deformation and the natural frequencies of the pre-twisted composite rotor blade are related to the length to chord ratio of the blade. 展开更多

Based on the actual operation parameters and temperature-dependent material properties of a gas turbine unit, composite cooling blade model and corresponding reliable boundary conditions were established.Transient thermal-fluid-solid coupling simulations were then comprehensively conducted to analyze the transient flow and the temperature field of the blade under startup, shutdown, and variable loads condition.Combined with the obtained transient temperature data, the non-linear finite element method was exploited to examine the effect of these transient operations on the turbine blade thermal stress characteristics. Results show that the temperature and pressure on the blade surface increase with the load level and vice versa. As the startup process progresses, the film cooling effectiveness and the heat convection of airflows inside the blade continuously grow;high-temperature areas on the pressure surface and along the trailing edge of the blade tip gradually disappear.Locally high-temperature zones with the maximum of 1280 K are generated at the air inlet and outlet of the blade platform and the leading edge of the blade tip.The high thermal stresses detected on the higher temperature side of the temperature gradient are commonly generated in places with large temperature gradients and significant geometry variations. For the startup/shutdown process, the rate of increase/decrease of the thermal stress is positively correlated with the load variation rate.A slight variation rate of the load(1.52%/min)can lead to an apparent alteration(41%)to the thermal stress. In operations under action of the variable load, although thermal stress is less sensitive to the load variation, the rising or falling rate of the exerted load still needs to be carefully controlled due to the highly leveled thermal stresses. 展开更多

In order to predict the lifetime of products appropriately with long lifetime and high reliability, the accelerated degradation testing(ADT)has been proposed.Composite wind turbine blade is one of the most important components in wind turbine system. Its fatigue cycle is very long in practice.A full-scale fatigue testing is usually used to verify the design of a new blade. In general, the full-scale fatigue testing of blade is accelerated on the basis of the damage equivalent principle.During the full-scale fatigue test ing, blade is subjected to higher testing load than normal operat ing conditions;consequently, the performance degradation of the blade is hastened over time. The full-scale fatigue testing of blade is regarded as a special ADT.According to the fatigue failure criterion,we choose blade stiffness as the characteristic quantity of the blade performance, and propose an accelerated model(AM)for blade on the basis of the theories of ADT.Then, degradation path of the blade stiffness is modeled by using Gamma process. Finally, the lifet ime prediction of full-scale megawatt(MW)blade is conducted by combining the proposed AM and blade stiffness degradation model. The prediction results prove the reasonability and validity of this study. This can supply a new approach to predict the lifetime of the full-scale MW blade. 展开更多
