The conjugated polycycles show excellent optical and electrical properties that are suitable for application in various organic electronics. While most of attentions have been paid to polycycles having planar π-conjugated system, the curved polycycles seem amazing due to their unique physical and chemical features. The non-planar conjugated polycycles have been created with the geometries of bracelet, saddle, bowl,Mobius band, helicenes, etc.Among them, the bowl-shaped one is of growing interest owing to the multidiscipline applications such as synthetic intermediates for end-cap of carbon nanotube, coordination with metal ions, encapsulation of fullerenes, and fabrication of electronic devices. In this paper,we summarize the recent advances on the chemistry of the bowl-shaped conjugated polycycles, particularly on their synthesis and the further chemical modifications toward organic functional materials. 展开更多

Understanding the structure-property relationships in polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons(PCHs)is crucial in controlling their electronic properties and developing new optically functional materials.Aromaticity is a fundamentally important and intriguing property of numerous organic chemical structures and has stimulated a myriad of experimental and theoretical investigations.Exploiting aromaticity rules for the rational design of optoelectronic materials with the desired photophysical characteristics is a challenging yet fascinating task.Herein we present an in-depth computational and spectroscopic study on the structure-property relationships of dinaphthopentalenes(DNPs).Results highlight that the different fusion patterns between 4nπand 4n+2πunits endow these PCHs with the tunable aromaticity in the ground state/excited state, which leads to the diverse electronic structures and consequently the distinctive excited state photophysics.Accordingly,we propose a combined aromaticity design strategy for rationally modulating and tailoring electronic and optical properties of PCH skeletons. These outcomes not only present a full picture of the excited state dynamics of the DNP system and afford a new class of efficient singlet fission-active materials but also provide some basic guidelines for exploiting aromaticity rules to design and develop new optical function materials. 展开更多

Polycyclic aromatics (PCAs) possess excellent photoelectric properties, but the construction of such compounds has been a quite challenging subject of study, mainly due to very low solubility. Herein we report a precursor synthesis strategy for polycyclic aromatic conjugated polymers. A soluble precursor polymer, that containing fusible "double U-shaped aromatic"(DUA) and perylenetetracarboxydiimide (PDI) units, was firstly synthesized by Suzuki coupling. The stereo aromatic units in polymer backbone were found to be converted into polycyclic aromatic units, i.e. hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC), by chemical or electrochemical oxidation, which resulted in a formation of insoluble polycyclic aromatic conjugated polymers. The electrochemical oxidations that occurred at the interface of electrode and solution exhibited higher cyclization reactivity and leads to the formation of high quality films on the electrode surface. Characterization by Raman and UV-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy validated the successful formation of this HBC structure. Some potential applications of such thin films are being explored, and here we focus on the characteristics of supercapacitors based on their excellent electrochemical properties. 展开更多
