A Study of Verbal Humor in Public Speech from the Perspective of Relevance Theory and Cooperative Principle--Taking TED Talks as An Example

Verbal humor carries rich cultural connotation and reflects the wisdom,communicative skills of the humor maker.There are many researches on verbal humor both at home and abroad,especially in the fields of sitcoms and literature from the perspective of pragmatics and cognitive linguistics.However,the researches on the humorous corpus of public speech are limited.This paper intendsto use qualitative research methods to explore the mechanism of verbal humor generation under the theoretical framework of cooperative principle and relevance theory.Through the analysis in the paper,it points out that verbal humor can be produced by violating the cooperative principle,the gap between maximum relevance and optimal relevance,and the speaker’s expanding contextual reasoning.The cooperation principle and relevance theory have a good elaboration on humor in public speeches,but both have their own deficiencies in explanatory power.Only the combination of those two theories can better explain the generation mechanism of verbal humor.

Analysis of English Humor in Two Broke Girls from the Perspective of Cooperative Principle

Humor,as a language art,is considered to be an indispensable form of communication in our daily life.This paper,from the perspective of cooperative principle,takes 8 humorous conversations from the popular sitcom Two Broke Girls as analytical materials to analyze English humor.The humorous effects produced by violating the maxim of quantity,quality,relation and manner in Two Broke Girls are the concrete embodiment of conversational implicature in English humor.The most important part of this paper is the detailed analyses of many examples,which is helpful to the study of the cultural differences between Chinese humor and English humor.Moreover,linking sitcoms to pragmatics can deepen interlocuters’understanding of cooperative principle and the speaker’s implication.As an interdisciplinary subject,therefore,not only can pragmatics be combined with sitcoms,but also applies to other fields.It is hoped that this paper can make future researchers realize the importance of context and delve into other areas from the perspective of cooperative principle.

Based on the Cooperative Principle, this paper aims to exploit the implicatures and reasons after violating related maxims in conversations that happens between Tess and Alec in Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and also aims to explain why Tess fails to protect herself and Alec succeeds in inducing Tess, Finally, It can be found that individual personality also contributes to Alec's success and Tess' s losing virginity. Besides, data collection and analysis are applied to provide deeper evidences.

Character Analysis for Love Is a Fallacy from the Perspectives of Speech Act Theory and Cooperative Principle

Love Is a Fallacy is a great work of Max Shulman, one of the America's most famous humorists. Literary pragmatics,an interdiscipline between literature and pragmatics, is concerned with the examples in which pragmatics is combined with linguistic and literary methods. Speech Act Theory, initiated by John Austin and developed by Paul Grice, has been employed in literary pragmatics. This paper aims to explore the characterization of the three roles in Love Is a Fallacy in the light of literary pragmatics. By delving into the realization of speech act and the flouting of the maxims of Cooperative Principle, the establishment process of characters can be better demonstrated.

The paper employs the method of discourse analysis to analyze males' and females' differences in cross-gender conversations in Gossip Girl from the perspective of Searle's Indirect Speech Act Theory, Grice's Cooperative Principle, and Leech's Politeness Principle. The study found that females tend to abide by Cooperative Principle, while males are more likely to fl out the CP, and that female characters are used to making requests or suggestions by raising question in a euphemistic way; while males concern less about courtesy, women always attach a great deal of importance to saving others' face in daily conversation. Pragmatic vagueness is not only a universal phenomenon in daily life,but also an indispensable communicative strategy,especially in press conferences.This article analyzes pragmatic vagueness in Chinese Spokespersons’four remarks from the perspective of Grice’s Cooperative Principle.The purpose of the article is to analyze the application of pragmatic vagueness in the remarks of Chinese spokespersons from the perspective of the Cooperative Principle and its pragmatic functions.The results show that pragmatic vagueness was an international communicative strategy in the remarks of Chinese spokespersons and through the use of pragmatic vagueness,the spokespersons violated the maxims of the Cooperative Principle,especially quantity maxim and manner maxim,in order to achieve different pragmatic functions:withholding information,being flexible,avoiding conflicts and safeguarding national interests.These findings have some implications for people to understand the application and functions of pragmatic vagueness in the remarks of Chinese spokespersons.

Courtroom discourse is a typical institutional discourse, which reflects the complicated discourse purpose among the participants in courtroom, with several characteristics such as: asymmetry of power relation, complex directions of communication and complex meaning of utterance.
