Facilities Planning for a Creative Company

Facilities planning tools have been used by project managers for planning industry spaces for decades now, but applications in creative organizations are still sparse. This happens mainly because of a gap that exists ... Facilities planning tools have been used by project managers for planning industry spaces for decades now, but applications in creative organizations are still sparse. This happens mainly because of a gap that exists between engineering and psychology fields, with the first developing planning tools for production but with little concern for creativity and the other developing spaces for creativity, but with a lack of tools. Both try to solve the same issue: fostering productivity in the workplace, but they need to be linked first, in order to accomplish it. How to close this gap? Can a project manager plan the facilities for a creative organizational in the best way possible? In this paper, a new approach is used for studying the design of physical environments that foster organizational creativity, combining the results of psychological studies on the impact of physical environment on creativity with the facilities planning body of knowledge applied by industrial engineers. In order to test the results, a single case study is developed in a small IT consulting firm. By using the systematic layout planning (SLP) step by step process, it is shown that by acting on the work environment of the company, the developers creative processes can be boosted and facilitated. It is also shown that both industrial engineering and creativity research have much to contribute to each other and future research topics in the field are presented. 展开更多

The Hosseini trilogy encompasses Khaled Hosseini’s three distinguished novels:The Kite Runner,A Thousand Splendid Suns,and And the Mountains Echoed.As an Afghan-American novelist,Hosseini’s works exemplify a significant achievement within the sphere of ethnic literature.However,there is a significant deficiency in comprehensive examinations concerning his artistic traits throughout these three works.Therefore,focusing on Hosseini’s cultural identity as an ethnic writer,this paper purports to investigate the creative methodologies that emerge within his trilogy.The author posits that Hosseini employs at least three prominent creative strategies:An English writing framework with bilingual cultural elements,vivid depictions of wars through minor incidents,and soul-saving emotional narratives,all of which contribute substantially to the success of his trilogy while also providing meaningful insights for the development and advancement of ethnic writers. 展开更多

This paper falls into the broad area of economic geography and economics of creativity,and it presents an alternative approach to explain why total factor productivity(TFP)growth is different across China′s regions.It establishes an empirical model to estimate the spatial agglomeration effects of creative industries on regional TFP growth,using China′s provincial panel data during the period of 2003 to 2010.We found that the creative industries agglomeration(CIA)has significant and positive impact on regional TFP growth.The result also implies that the CIA can facilitate regional TFP growth through promoting regional innovation instead of improving regional efficiency.Therefore,we argue that policy makers should take some measures to retain and establish more creative zones. 展开更多
