Crime scene investigation(CSI)image is key evidence carrier during criminal investiga-tion,in which CSI image retrieval can assist the public police to obtain criminal clues. Moreover, with the rapid development of deep learning,data-driven paradigm has become the mainstreammethod of CSI image feature extraction and representation, and in this process, datasets provideeffective support for CSI retrieval performance. However, there is a lack of systematic research onCSI image retrieval methods and datasets. Therefore,we present an overview of the existing worksabout one-class and multi-class CSI image retrieval based on deep learning.According to theresearch, based on their technical functionalities and implementation methods,CSI image retrievalis roughly classified into five categories:feature representation, metric learning, generative adversar-ial networks, autoencoder networks and attention networks.Furthermore,We analyzed the remain-ing challenges and discussed future work directions in this field. 展开更多

Crime scene is any given place where it committed a criminal offense, in which the investigation should be done to find the causes and mechanisms of occurrence and on these to be investigated, for tracking and apprehension of perpetrators. Preservation of the scene is a very important action regarding the investigation and prosecution of the event that has happened, where law enforcement agencies or units that conduct surveillance of the scene make it. To preserve a scene means: to preserve the land in that state who has left the presidency. Preservation of the scene of that condition that has left the perpetrator is of particular importance to the inspection teams for tracks and material evidence found there are untouched and proceeding or their expertise will help prosecute perpetrators respectively capture of that work. Tracks and material evidence found in the scene should be retained together with all the space where the event happened because a possible carelessness during the examination as well as during the process of storage and security will bring us to a situation in which we will have our doubts concerning the tracks and material evidence found in that place. Also, preservation of the crime scene needs to be done because of the all action who have to take the searching unit, they need to be sure and security from everything that comes from outside. 展开更多

Touch deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA)refers to the DNA that is left behind from skin cells when a person touches or comes into contact with an object. In crimes where the identification of suspects becomes a challenge, touch DNA has been a proven investigative tool. The present study aims to provide a systematic review of the role of touch DNAin criminal cases which discusses the nature and importance of touch DNA evidence at crime scenes;various phenomena including the transfer and persistence of touched samples;different factors affecting the touch sample deposition and DNA shedding;the best recovery methods and collection of samples from different substrates;and the interpretation of profiles through advanced techniques that identify the suspects. The present study also aims to optimize standard protocols in the laboratories for touched samples appropriate to the substrates that improve the success rate of profiles from touched items. 展开更多

Forensic science plays a significant role in crime scene analysis and other evidence collection(such as clothes, cigarette butts, blood, semen, hair, etc.,)to scientifically establish the accused’s guilt. In rape and murder cases,DNA tests confirm the victim’s identity. It provides certain evidence that is helpful in the speedy investigation and conclusion of a trial. However,it is not a foolproof science and it has certain limitations.Hence, the first responders, such as the Crime Laboratory Ultimate Evidence System team and the forensic experts, must keep these limitations in mind during sample collection and examination, otherwise,it may lead to incorrect results.Such incorrect results may be obtained due to insufficient sample quantity, improper collection methods,or delay in an examination. It is highly recommended to implement standard operating procedure guidelines, failing which the admissibility of such forensic evidence to prove beyond all reasonable doubts is at stake.Accordingly, the court shall acquit the accused giving him the benefit of doubt. This article focuses on the applicability and limitations of forensic science in the Indian Criminal Justice System and the need to adopt due protocols to yield viable results. 展开更多
