The current acid deposition critical loads in Guangdong, China were calculated using the PROFILE model with a 3 km × 3 km resolution. Calculations were carded out for critical loads of potential acidity, actual acidity, sulfur and nitrogen, with values in extents of 0-3.5, 0-14.0, 0-26.0 and 0-3.5 kmol/(hrnE.year), respectively. These values were comparable to previously reported results and reflected the influences of vegetation and soil characteristics on the soil acid buffering capacity. Simulations of SO2 emission and sulfur deposition in this study showed that sulfur deposition core areas mirrored SO2 emission centers. The prediction of sulfur deposition after 20% and 40% reduction of SO2 emission suggested that the reduction of area sources contributed greatly to the decrease of sulfur deposition. Thus, abatement of area source emissions could be the primary way to mitigate sulfur deposition in Guangdong to meet both the provincial and national regulations of air pollution control. 展开更多

This paper presents a newly developed proximity indicator for voltage stability assessment which can be used to predict critical real system load and voltages at various load buses at critical loading point.The proximity indicator varies almost parabolic with total real load demand and reaches orthogonally to real load axis.This relation has been utilized to predict critical loading point.It has been shown that two operating points are needed for estimating critical point and proper selection of operating points and variation of proximity indicator near collapse point highly affect the accuracy of estimation.Simulation is based on load flow equations and system real and reactive loadings have been increased in proportion with base case scenario for IEEE 14 and IEEE 25 bus test systems to demonstrate the behaviour of proposed proximity indicator.CPF has been used as benchmark to check the accuracy of estimation. 展开更多

A method described is to produce critical load maps of acid deposition for soils in China. Critical loads were assigned to the most sensitive soil in each 0.1°×0.1° grid square of China based on the Skokloster classification [1] and adjusted for temperature and land use. The map shows that soils with small critical load (<0.5keq·ha -1 ·a -1 ) i.e., highly sensitive to acid deposition, dominate in the south and northeast China. As a result of the adjustment, much of the acid sensitive area in the south estimated by the Skokloster method is lost. This reflects the decreased sensitivity as a result of agricultural activities and increased weathering rate in response to high temperature. Based on the 0.1°×0.1° map, a series of percentile critical load maps at 1°×1° scale were compiled for integrated assessments, as well as a critical load map using the minimum critical load for each grid. Comparison of critical loads with sulphur deposition in 1995 led to the critical load exceedance maps for sulphur deposition, which show that high exceedance areas do not correlate well with the low critical load areas, and almost one fourth of the land area, mainly in the southeast, is subject to the risk of acidification. 展开更多

Dynamical responses, such as motion and destruction of hyper-elastic cylindrical shells subject to periodic or suddenly applied constant load on the inner surface, are studied within a framework of finite elasto-dynamics. By numerical computation and dynamic qualitative analysis of the nonlinear differential equation, it is shown that there exists a certain critical value for the internal load describing motion of the inner surface of the shell. Motion of the shell is nonlinear periodic or quasi-periodic oscillation when the average load of the periodic load or the constant load is less than its critical value. However, the shell will be destroyed when the load exceeds the critical value. Solution to the static equilibrium problem is a fixed point for the dynamical response of the corresponding system under a suddenly applied constant load. The property of fixed point is related to the property of the dynamical solution and motion of the shell. The effects of thickness and load parameters on the critical value and oscillation of the shell are discussed. 展开更多

It is indicated that elastic and elasto-plastic states would occur in the slope. When q is smaller than the critical load, q(p), the slope is in the elastic state. If q equals q(p), the slope is in the critical state, and the plastic deformation would occur along the critical angle. With the increase of q, the plastic zone would extend, and the slope is in the elasto-plastic State. If q equals limit load, the slope is in the limit equilibrium state. The slope may be divided into three zones. Some charts of the critical angle, the critical and limit load coefficients are presented in this paper. 展开更多

The solution was derived by modified iteration method, so the analytic relations between amplitude and nonlinear oscillating frequency for circular sandwich plates were obtained. The example studied in this paper can be used as a paradigm for other non-uniform columns. The wavelength of equivalent vibratory system is used to calculate the critical load of the trigonometrically varied inertia column. In doing so, the equilibrium equation of the column is theoretically studied using the perturbation method. Accuracy of the calculated results is evaluated by comparing the solution with numerical results. Effect of improving the initial guess on the solution accuracy is investigated. Effects of varying parameters of the trigonometrically varied inertia and the uniformly tapered columns on their stability behavior are studied. Finally, using the so-called "perfectibility" parameter, two design goals, i.e., being lightweight and being strong, are studied for the discussed columns. 展开更多

Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay subsea tunnel is the second self-built tunnel in China with the designed service life over 100 years.The durability of lining concrete are one of an important factors to determinate the service life of tunnel.Considering the main environmental loads and mechanical loads of subsea tunnel,the durability properties of lining concrete under combined action of compressive load and carbonation has been studied through the critical compressive load test,accelerated carbonation test,natural carbonation test and capillary suction test.The tests results show that critical compressive load apparently accelerates the carbonation and deteriorates the anti-permeability of concrete.Under the combined action of critical compressive load and carbonation,the durability of lining concrete decreases.Based on the carbonization life criteria and research results,for the high-performance concrete with proposed mix ratio,the predicted service life of lining concrete for Jiaozhou bay subsea tunnel is about 80 years which fails to reach the required service life.It is necessary to adopt other measurements simultaneously to improve the durability of lining concrete. 展开更多

The nonlinear analysis with an analytical approach on dynamic torsional buckling of stiffened functionally graded thin toroidal shell segments is investigated. The shell is reinforced by inside stiffeners and surrounded by elastic foundations in a thermal environment and under a time-dependent torsional load. The governing equations are derived based on the Donnell shell theory with the yon Karman geometrical nonlinearity, the Stein and McElman assumption, the smeared stiffeners technique, and the Galerkin method. A deflection function with three terms is chosen. The thermal parameters of the uniform temperature rise and nonlinear temperature conduction law are found in an explicit form. A closed-form expression for determining the static critical torsional load is obtained. A critical dynamic torsional load is found by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method and the Budiansky-Roth criterion. The effects of stiffeners, foundations, material, and dimensional parameters on dynamic responses of shells are considered. 展开更多

From ultra-low friction to superlubricity state of black phosphorus:Enabled by the critical oxidation and load

Based on the density functional theory(DFT),we investigate the friction properties of inevitable oxidized black phosphorus(o-BP).o-BP with the weaker interlayer adhesion exhibits their great potential as a solid lubricant.At the zero load,the friction property of o-BP is adjusted by its oxidation degree.Expressly,ultra-low friction of P4O2(50%oxidation,O:P=2:4=50%)is obtained,which is attributed to the upper O atoms with lower sliding resistance in the O channel formed by lower layer O atoms.More attractive,we observe superlubricity behavior of o-BP at the critical load/distance due to the flattening potential energy surface(PES).The flattening PES is controlled by the electrostatic role for the high-load(P4O3,O:P=3:4=75%),and by the electrostatic and dispersion roles for the low-load(P4O2).Distinctly,the transform from ultra-low friction to superlubricity state of black phosphorus(BP)can be achieved by critical oxidation and load,which shows an important significance in engineering application.In addition,negative friction behavior of o-BP is a general phenomenon(Z>Z_(min),Z_(min)is the interlayer distances between the outermost P atoms of minimum load.),while its surface-surface model is different from the fold mechanism of the tip-surface model(Z_(0)<Z<Z_(min),Z_(0)is the interlayer distances between the outermost P atoms of equilibrium state.).Thus,this phenomenon cannot be captured due to the jump effect with instability of the atomic force microscopy(AFM)(Z>Z_(min)).In summary,o-BP improves the friction performance and reduces the application limitation,comparing to graphene(Gr),MoS2,and their oxides. 展开更多

The design of columns relies heavily on the basis of Leonhard Euler’s Theory of Elastic Buckling.However,to increase the accuracy in determining the maximum critical load a column can withstand before buckling,a constant was introduced.This dimensionless coefficient is K,also known as the effective-length factor.This constant is often found in building design codes and varies in value depending on the type of column support that is applied.This paper presents experimental and analytical studies on the determination of the effective-length factor in the buckling stability of columns with partially-fixed support conditions.To this end,the accurate K value of the columns tested by the Instron Testing Machine(ITM)at California State University,Northridge’s(CSUN’s)Mechanics Laboratory is determined.The ITM is used in studying the buckling of columns where the supports are neither pinned nor fixed,and the material cross-section rather rests upon the machine while loading is applied axially.Several column specimens were tested and the experimental data were analyzed in order to estimation of the accurate effective-length factor.The calculations from the tested results as well as the conducted probabilistic analysis shed light on how a fragility curve may aid in predicting the effective-length value of future tests. 展开更多

When the bridge components needing maintenance are the world problem at present,and the health monitoring system is considered to be a very help­ful tool for solving this problem.In this paper,a large number of strain data acquired from the structural health monitoring system(SHMS)installed on a continuous rigid frame bridge are adopted to do reliability assessment.Firstly,a calculation method of punctiform time-dependent reliability is proposed based on the basic reliability theory,and introduced how to cal­culate reliability of the bridge by using the stress data transformed from the strain data.Secondly,combined with“Three Sigma”principle and the basic pressure safety reserve requirement,the critical load effects distribu­tion function of the bridge is defined,and then the maintenance reliability threshold for controlling the unfavorable load state which appears in the early operation stage of this type bridge is suggested,and then the combi­nation of bridge maintenance management and health monitoring system is realized.Finally,the transformed stress distribution certifies that the load effects of concrete bridges practically have a normal distribution;as for the concrete continuous rigid frame bridge with C50 strength grade concrete,the retrofit reliability threshold should be valued at 6.13.The methodology suggested in this article can help bridge engineers do effective maintenance of bridges,which can effectively extend the service life of the bridge and bring better economic and social benefits. 展开更多

This method solves general complicated problems by using the solutions of special simple problems, simplifies the solving procedure and expands the scope of solvable problem.
