The compression behavior responsible for unity sensitivity is very valuable in quantitative assessment of the effects of soil structure on the compression behavior of soft marine sediments. However, the quantitative assessment of such effects is not possible because of unavailability of the formula for the compression curve of marine sediments responsible for unit sensitivity. In this study, the relationship between the remolded state and the conventional critical state line is presented in the deviator stress versus mean effective stress plot. The analysis indicates that the remolded state is on the conventional critical state line obtained at a relatively small strain. Thus, a unique critical state sedimentation line for marine sediments of unit sensitivity is proposed. The comparison between the critical state sedimentation line proposed in this study and the existing normalized consolidation curves obtained from conventional oedometer tests on remolded soils or reconstituted soils explains well the 展开更多

This paper discusses the primary causes from the point of synergistic effects to improve power system vulnerability in the power system planning and safety operation. Based on the vulnerability conception in the complex network theory the vulnerability of the power system can be evaluated by the minimum load loss rate when considering power supply ability.Consequently according to the synergistic effect theory the critical line of the power system is defined by its influence on failure set vulnerability in N-k contingencies.The cascading failure modes are proposed based on the criterion whether the acceptable load curtailment level is below a preset value.Significant conclusions are revealed by results of IEEE 39 case analysis weak points of power networks and heavy load condition are the main causes of large-scale cascading failures damaging synergistic effects can result in partial failure developed into large-scale cascading failures vulnerable lines of power systems can directly lead the partial failure to deteriorate into a large blackout while less vulnerable lines can cause a large-scale cascading failure. 展开更多

It is shown that any polynomial written as an infinite product with all positive real roots may be split in two steps into the product of four infinite polynomials: two with all imaginary and two with all real roots. Equations between such infinite products define adjoint infinite polynomials with roots on the adjoint roots (real and imaginary). It is shown that the shifting of the coordinates to a parallel line of one of the adjoint axes does not influence the relative placement of the roots: they are shifted to the parallel line. General relations between original and adjoint polynomials are evaluated. These relations are generalized representations of the relations of Euler and Pythagoras in form of infinite polynomial products. They are inherent properties of split polynomial products. If the shifting of the coordinate system corresponds to the shifting of the imaginary axes to the critical line, then the relations of Euler take the form corresponding to their occurrence in the functional equation of the Riemann zeta function: the roots on the imaginary axes are all shifted to the critical line. Since it is known that the gamma and the zeta functions may be written as composed functions with exponential and trigonometric parts, this opens the possibility to prove the placement of the zeta function on the critical line. 展开更多

Remolded soils have a wide spectrum of liquid limits ranging from 25% to 412%. It is found that the remolded undrained strength is a function of water content and liquid limit. Furthermore, a simple index designated as normalized water content w * is introduced for normalizing remolded undrained strength for various soils. The normalized water content w * is the ratio of water content to liquid limit. The relationship between the remolded undrained strength and the normalized water content can be expressed by a simple equation. The new simple equation is not only valuable theoretically for helping in assessing the in situ mechanical behavior, but also useful to ocean engineering practice. 展开更多

Voltage instability is a serious phenomenon that can occur in a power system because of critical or stressed condi-tions.To prevent voltage collapse caused by such instability,accurate voltage collapse prediction is necessary for power system planning and operation.This paper proposes a novel collapse prediction index(NCPI)to assess the volt-age stability conditions of the power system and the critical conditions of lines.The effectiveness and applicability of the proposed index are investigated on the IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems and compared with the well-known existing indices(Lmn,FVSI,LQP,NLSI,and VSLI)under several power system operations to validate its practicability and versatility.The study also presents the sensitivity assumptions of existing indices and analyzes their impact on voltage collapse prediction.The application results under intensive case studies prove that the proposed index NCPI adapts to several operating power conditions.The results show the superiority of the proposed index in accurately estimating the maximum load-ability and predicting the critical lines,weak buses,and weak areas in medium and large networks during various power load operations and contingencies.A line interruption or generation unit outage in a power system can also lead to voltage collapse,and this is a contingency in the power system.Line and generation unit outage contingencies are examined to identify the lines and generators that significantly impact system stability in the event of an outage.The contingencies are also ranked to identify the most severe outages that significantly cause voltage collapse because of the outage of line or generator. 展开更多

The macroscopic alignment of conjugated polymers with low grain boundary is essential to carrier transport. During film forming process, the match between contact line receding velocity and the critical alignment velocity is essential to get the alignment polymer film. In this paper, the contact line receding velocity of a D-A conjugated polymer film, isoindigo and bithiophene(IIDDT-C3), was adjusted by solvent vapor content and film-formation temperature. Only when solvent vapor content was 0.3 m L and the film-formation temperature was 90C, the contact line receding velocity was in accordance with the critical alignment velocity, and the highest degree of alignment was attained in the IIDDT-C3 film, with the dichroic ratio up to 4.08. Fibers were aligned parallel with the direction of the contact line receding and the molecules of IIDDT-C3 adopted an edge-on orientation with the backbone parallel with the direction of fiber long axis. The effect of initial fabric anisotropy produced by sample preparation on the shear behavior of granular soil is investigated by performing discrete element method (DEM) simulations of fourteen biaxial tests in drained conditions. Numerical test specimens are prepared by three means: gravitational deposition, multi-layer compression, and isotropic compression, such that different initial inherent soil fabrics are created. The DEM simulation results show that initial fabric anisotropy exerts a considerable effect on the shear behavior of granular soil, and that the peak stress ratio and peak dilatancy increase with an increase in the fabric index an that is estimated from the contact orientations. The stress-dilatancy relationship is found to be independent of the initial fabric anisotropy. The anisotropy related to the contact orientation and contact normal force accounts for the main contribution to the mobilized friction angle. Also, the occurrence of contractive shear response in an initial shearing stage is accompanied by the most intense particle rearrangement and microstructural reorganization, regardless of the sample preparation method. Furthermore, the uniqueness of the critical state line in e-logp' and q-p' plots is observed, suggesting that the influence of initial fabric anisotropy is erased at large shear strains. 展开更多
