Characterizing structure of cross-disciplinary impact of global disciplines:A perspective of the Hierarchy of Science

Purpose:Interdisciplinary fields have become the driving force of modern science and a significant source of scientific innovation.However,there is still a paucity of analysis about the essential characteristics of disciplines’cross-disciplinary impact.Design/methodology/approach:In this study,we define cross-disciplinary impact on one discipline as its impact to other disciplines,and refer to a three-dimensional framework of variety-balance-disparity to characterize the structure of cross-disciplinary impact.The variety of cross-disciplinary impact of the discipline was defined as the proportion of the high cross-disciplinary impact publications,and the balance and disparity of cross-disciplinary impact were measured as well.To demonstrate the cross-disciplinary impact of the disciplines in science,we chose Microsoft Academic Graph(MAG)as the data source,and investigated the relationship between disciplines’cross-disciplinary impact and their positions in the Hierarchy of Science(HOS).Findings:Analytical results show that there is a significant correlation between the ranking of cross-disciplinary impact and the HOS structure,and that the discipline exerts a greater cross-disciplinary impact on its neighboring disciplines.Several bibliometric features that measure the hardness of a discipline,including the number of references,the number of cited disciplines,the citation distribution,and the Price index have a significant positive effect on the variety of cross-disciplinary impact.The number of references,the number of cited disciplines,and the citation distribution have significant positive and negative effects on balance and disparity,respectively.It is concluded that the less hard the discipline,the greater the cross-disciplinary impact,the higher balance and the lower disparity of cross-disciplinary impact.Research limitations:In the empirical analysis of HOS,we only included five broad disciplines.This study also has some biases caused by the data source and applied regression models.Practical implications:This study contributes to the formulation of discipline-specific policies and promotes the growth of interdisciplinary research,as well as offering fresh insights for predicting the cross-disciplinary impact of disciplines.Originality/value:This study provides a new perspective to properly understand the mechanisms of cross-disciplinary impact and disciplinary integration. 展开更多

I had the enormous pleasure of meeting Professor YE personally in 1992 in Beijing. His concern to promote the very best science and to use it well, and his thinking on multi-level orderly human activities, reminds me not only of the communication skills we need as scientists but also of the multi-level nature of science itself. Here I want to say something(a) about what science is;(b) about why multi-level thinking—and taking more than one viewpoint—is so important for scientific as well as for other forms of understanding; and(c) about what is meant, at a deep level, by "scientific understanding" and trying to communicate it, not only with lay persons but also across professional disciplines. The spatiotemporal landscape heterogeneity implies multiple biodiversity mechanisms across scales, and the cross-disciplinary studies between landscape ecology and biodiversity are becoming a new research field in China. This paper briefly reviews the development of the field by comparing papers published in international journals and Chinese journals;then it investigates the differences in the trends and focuses between international and Chinese studies. We also introduce several study areas that have emerged over the last 10 years in this field, including metacommunity assembly, landscape genetics, biodiversity and ecosystem service relationship, and landscape planning for biodiversity conservation. The major advances emerging in this field in China over the past 5 years can be classified into six subject areas: 1) effects of urban landscape and urbanization on biodiversity;2) altitudinal patterns of biodiversity in mountain landscapes;3) effects of topographic heterogeneity on plant community assembly and species coexistence;4) impacts of landscape patterns and processes on animal behaviors;5) forest fires and spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation responses;and 6) landscape ecology applications in natural conservation planning and design. In an attempt to promote cross-field studies between geography and ecology, this special issue collected 10 research articles, involving multiple landscape types and biological assemblages, in order to explore the interaction between landscape features and biodiversity. We anticipate that the future development of this active front will be primarily driven by the application of novel information techniques and the realistic demands of sustainability issues, in addition to answering scientific questions cross scales. 展开更多

The common endogenous security problems in cyberspace and related attack threats have posed subversive challenges to conventional theories and methods of functional safety.In the current design of the cyber physical system(CPS),functional safety and cyber security are increasingly intertwined and inseparable,which evolve into the generalized functional safety(S&S)problem.The conventional reliability and cybersecurity technologies are unable to provide security assurance with quanti able design and veri cation metrics in response to the cyberattacks in hardware and software with common endogenous security problems,and the functional safety of CPS facilities or device has become a frightening ghost.The dynamic heterogeneity redundancy(DHR)architecture and coding channel theory(CCT)proposed by the cyberspace endogenous security paradigm could handle random failures and uncertain network attacks in an integrated manner,and its generalized robust control mechanism can solve the universal problem of quantitative design for functional safety under probability or improbability perturbation.As a generalized functional safety enabling structure,DHR opens up a new direction to solve the common endogenous security problems in the cross-disciplinary elds of cyberspace. 展开更多

This year’s CELEA annual conference was held in Xi’an from October 14-18. Given that it was a particularly stimulating and informative weekend I wish to draw out and summarise some key themes I gained from the conference for the benefit of interested teachers who were unable to participate. The themes include insights into language teaching goals and possible cross-disciplinary directions across China. The article concludes with some suggestions for future conference papers. Having come from outside of China and currently practicing as an English teacher in China, and being one of only two conference participants teaching in China’s Southwest Yunnan province, I may be able to provide some broad and different insights that can be used as a basis for further discussion. In combining these conference themes, this paper calls for increased cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue in the context of English teaching research and practice in China. 展开更多
