The adequacy of language education largely depends on the favorable and unfavorable emotions that teachers and students experience throughout the education process.Simply said,emotional factors play a key role in impr...The adequacy of language education largely depends on the favorable and unfavorable emotions that teachers and students experience throughout the education process.Simply said,emotional factors play a key role in improving the quality of language teaching and learning.Furthermore,these emotional factors also promote the well-being of language teachers and learners and place them in a suitable mental condition.In view of the favorable impact of emotional factors on the mental health of language teachers and learners,many educational scholars around the world have studied these factors,their background,and their pedagogical consequences.Nonetheless,the majority of previous studies have employed traditional research methods in assessing these variables and their influences on language teachers’and learners’mental health.Because of the complex and dynamic quality of emotional factors,traditional research approaches often fail to evaluate these factors and their dynamic,non-linear connections with teachers’and learners’mental health and well-being.Accordingly,some novel research approaches are required to measure the dynamicity and complexity of emotional factors in language education settings.To address this call,the current state-of-the-art conceptual article seeks to provide new insights for investigating emotional factors and their potential impact on language teachers’and learners’mental states.This study also intends to offer a comprehensive list of emerging methods that take into account the complex and dynamic nature of emotional variables.Finally,the study outlines the potential implications of this review for educational researchers.展开更多
This study examines the writing abilities of Iranian intermediate Korean learners,specifically their performance in the compositional writing section of the Test of Proficiency in Korean(TOPIK).By utilizing the many F...This study examines the writing abilities of Iranian intermediate Korean learners,specifically their performance in the compositional writing section of the Test of Proficiency in Korean(TOPIK).By utilizing the many FACETS-Rasch Model,we meticulously analyzed nine writing samples from the 52nd TOPIK.These samples were evaluated using a modified rubric ranging from 0 to 3 based on predefined criteria for written composition.The results underscored that the sections on“appropriateness of spacing and spelling,”“relevance of vocabulary,”and“content diversity”presented the most significant challenges for the learners.On the other hand,“the quantity of writing”emerged as the least challenging aspect.These findings reveal substantial disparities in various aspects of writing proficiency among learners.The study not only pinpoints issue areas in writing skills,but also underscores the necessity of customized teaching strategies within the TOPIK framework to address these weaknesses.Consequently,it offers valuable insights that could bolster the effectiveness of teaching writing to Korean language learners.The findings of this study are not only significant for the field of language education,but also contribute to a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by intermediate learners and provide a roadmap for improving language instruction.展开更多

Purpose:Assess whether ChatGPT 4.0 is accurate enough to perform research evaluations on journal articles to automate this time-consuming task.Design/methodology/approach:Test the extent to which ChatGPT-4 can assess ...Purpose:Assess whether ChatGPT 4.0 is accurate enough to perform research evaluations on journal articles to automate this time-consuming task.Design/methodology/approach:Test the extent to which ChatGPT-4 can assess the quality of journal articles using a case study of the published scoring guidelines of the UK Research Excellence Framework(REF)2021 to create a research evaluation ChatGPT.This was applied to 51 of my own articles and compared against my own quality judgements.Findings:ChatGPT-4 can produce plausible document summaries and quality evaluation rationales that match the REF criteria.Its overall scores have weak correlations with my self-evaluation scores of the same documents(averaging r=0.281 over 15 iterations,with 8 being statistically significantly different from 0).In contrast,the average scores from the 15 iterations produced a statistically significant positive correlation of 0.509.Thus,averaging scores from multiple ChatGPT-4 rounds seems more effective than individual scores.The positive correlation may be due to ChatGPT being able to extract the author’s significance,rigour,and originality claims from inside each paper.If my weakest articles are removed,then the correlation with average scores(r=0.200)falls below statistical significance,suggesting that ChatGPT struggles to make fine-grained evaluations.Research limitations:The data is self-evaluations of a convenience sample of articles from one academic in one field.Practical implications:Overall,ChatGPT does not yet seem to be accurate enough to be trusted for any formal or informal research quality evaluation tasks.Research evaluators,including journal editors,should therefore take steps to control its use.Originality/value:This is the first published attempt at post-publication expert review accuracy testing for ChatGPT.展开更多

The author will follow the recent call from the Board of Trustees da Academia Europaea to redirect policies toward the organization of multidisciplinary research projects. Among these so-called "small subjects", we will find original, inspired, and valuable research projects in the humanities, It is worth mentioning that the crisis that has been diminishing this type of scholarship strangely cohabits with several policies promoted by the European Commission and the Council of Europe to develop programs for plurilingual education and linguistic diversity, new framework strategies for multilingualism, and the use of new technologies for language teaching and learning. The author claims that the best or one of the best methodologies of the historical study of Chinese language is the combination of the two, hence a new interpretation of “The Double-proof Method”. Meanwhile, this essay is also an attempt to put forward “The Law of Quan-ma and Gui-mei” in Chinese language studies, in which the author believes that it is not advisable to either treat Gui-mei as Quan-ma or vice versa in linguistic research. It is found that the best researched topics in SLA are vocabu-lary acquisition, explicit knowledge, form-focused teaching, language use, and so on, among which learner's language attracts themost attention. 文摘As one of the major factors affecting second language learners' success to their acquisition achievement,motivation has been examined in a wide variety of research papers.It is thus instructive to conduct a critical review of both theoretical and empirical developments in SLA research from over the last few decades.This approach will provide a broad,and integrated perspective onto the current understanding of the complextopic of motivation.Such an undertaking is valuable for teachers,and researchers alike,in developing useful teaching methods,and finding futureavenues of SLA motivation research respectively.The following paper provides an overview of recent theoretical and empirical findings,examines some of the problems and contradictions found in current SLA research,and gives an initial departure point for future directions of research in the area of motivation.The paper concludes with a discussion of some of the implications for teachers,and possible classroom strategies that are drawn from the current body of motivation research.

It begins with a discussion of the concepts of general anxiety and language anxiety, and then continues with an introduction of the techniques for identifying language anxiety. Subsequently, litera ture on the relationships of language anxiety to learner variables and language learning/using are covered. Finally the dispute and theories concerning language anxiety are presented.
文摘Keywords word frequency and co-word analysis are adopted in an attempt to to investigate the focuses and fronts of inter-national second language acquisition(SLA) researches by analyzing the key words in articles published in the internationally re-nowned SLA academic journal Language Learning from 2012 to 2016. It is found that the best researched topics in SLA are vocabu-lary acquisition, explicit knowledge, form-focused teaching, language use, and so on, among which learner's language attracts themost attention. In terms of research methods, they become more diversified and interdisciplinary, as empirical studies take a domi-nant position and experiments still play a leading role, displaying an interdisciplinary feature.
文摘Based on the theoretical origin of sociocultural views,this paper reviews second language writing from the sociocultural perspective in recent years and puts forw ard suggestions for the follow-up study. Research from the sociocultural perspective adopts the overall qualitative research methods,with the sociocultural theories and dialogue theories being the framework,attaching importance to the writing process and social context,and concludes that the theoretical basis,research emphasis and methodology still needs perfection.
文摘Chomsky’s Universal Grammar(UG)theory not only answers"the logical problem of language acquisition",but also provides insights and thoughts for second language acquisition(SLA)research on both theoretical and empirical level.However,there are many problems of UG-based research.On the theoretical aspect,UG-based approach left untouched many areas apart from"core grammar"and the continual development of the theory is problematic to second language researchers.On the empirical aspects,most experiments reveal problems with the design and data collection process.In short,the evaluation of UG concerning SLA should be developmental and comprehensive.
文摘A survey of language training centers(LTCs)in Dalian,China was conducted,to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses,or the differentiating factors,of such centers.The survey was undertaken to understand the current landscape of after-school institutes in the region,particularly those that offer training in English as a second/foreign language.The information uncovered by the research is considered beneficial not only to entrepreneurs who may wish to be involved in this industry,but also to college English majors who may wish to teach at an LTC.
