Towards Innovative Research Approaches to Investigating the Role of Emotional Variables in Promoting Language Teachers’ and Learners’ Mental Health

The adequacy of language education largely depends on the favorable and unfavorable emotions that teachers and students experience throughout the education process.Simply said,emotional factors play a key role in improving the quality of language teaching and learning.Furthermore,these emotional factors also promote the well-being of language teachers and learners and place them in a suitable mental condition.In view of the favorable impact of emotional factors on the mental health of language teachers and learners,many educational scholars around the world have studied these factors,their background,and their pedagogical consequences.Nonetheless,the majority of previous studies have employed traditional research methods in assessing these variables and their influences on language teachers’and learners’mental health.Because of the complex and dynamic quality of emotional factors,traditional research approaches often fail to evaluate these factors and their dynamic,non-linear connections with teachers’and learners’mental health and well-being.Accordingly,some novel research approaches are required to measure the dynamicity and complexity of emotional factors in language education settings.To address this call,the current state-of-the-art conceptual article seeks to provide new insights for investigating emotional factors and their potential impact on language teachers’and learners’mental states.This study also intends to offer a comprehensive list of emerging methods that take into account the complex and dynamic nature of emotional variables.Finally,the study outlines the potential implications of this review for educational researchers.

Analyzing the Essay Writing Patterns of Iranian Intermediate-Level Korean Language Learners: A Study Based on the TOPIK Exam

This study examines the writing abilities of Iranian intermediate Korean learners,specifically their performance in the compositional writing section of the Test of Proficiency in Korean(TOPIK).By utilizing the many FACETS-Rasch Model,we meticulously analyzed nine writing samples from the 52nd TOPIK.These samples were evaluated using a modified rubric ranging from 0 to 3 based on predefined criteria for written composition.The results underscored that the sections on“appropriateness of spacing and spelling,”“relevance of vocabulary,”and“content diversity”presented the most significant challenges for the learners.On the other hand,“the quantity of writing”emerged as the least challenging aspect.These findings reveal substantial disparities in various aspects of writing proficiency among learners.The study not only pinpoints issue areas in writing skills,but also underscores the necessity of customized teaching strategies within the TOPIK framework to address these weaknesses.Consequently,it offers valuable insights that could bolster the effectiveness of teaching writing to Korean language learners.The findings of this study are not only significant for the field of language education,but also contribute to a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by intermediate learners and provide a roadmap for improving language instruction.

Research and countermeasures on how to improve English parole competence of contemporary college students under non-target language environment

Based on linguistic theories which developed by Saussure and some other contemporary linguists, this article attempts to analyze the factors that cause low English parole competence of the contemporary college students under non-target language environment. It views that how to properly deal with the relationship between langue and parole is still a debating focus in applied linguistics. The result of low English parole competence of contemporary college students is due to the interaction of the contemporary College English syllabus, text books pedagogies and the English language level of both students and teachers. Thus it puts forward some suggestions to improve the college students＇ English parole competence.

Corpora research of language transfer

The paper firstly reviews the developments of language transfer research. Utilizing the results supplied by CEM and AntConc, the present writer conducts analyses of the lexicai errors committed by the students in TEM-8 test and reveals the contributions to SLA and EFL language teaching that language transfer may make.

Foreign language anxiety is one of the factors of affecting foreign language achievement. It is negatively associated with language skill learning. This article will show some researches on foreign language anxiety from certain aspects.

Can ChatGPT evaluate research quality?

Purpose:Assess whether ChatGPT 4.0 is accurate enough to perform research evaluations on journal articles to automate this time-consuming task.Design/methodology/approach:Test the extent to which ChatGPT-4 can assess the quality of journal articles using a case study of the published scoring guidelines of the UK Research Excellence Framework(REF)2021 to create a research evaluation ChatGPT.This was applied to 51 of my own articles and compared against my own quality judgements.Findings:ChatGPT-4 can produce plausible document summaries and quality evaluation rationales that match the REF criteria.Its overall scores have weak correlations with my self-evaluation scores of the same documents(averaging r=0.281 over 15 iterations,with 8 being statistically significantly different from 0).In contrast,the average scores from the 15 iterations produced a statistically significant positive correlation of 0.509.Thus,averaging scores from multiple ChatGPT-4 rounds seems more effective than individual scores.The positive correlation may be due to ChatGPT being able to extract the author’s significance,rigour,and originality claims from inside each paper.If my weakest articles are removed,then the correlation with average scores(r=0.200)falls below statistical significance,suggesting that ChatGPT struggles to make fine-grained evaluations.Research limitations:The data is self-evaluations of a convenience sample of articles from one academic in one field.Practical implications:Overall,ChatGPT does not yet seem to be accurate enough to be trusted for any formal or informal research quality evaluation tasks.Research evaluators,including journal editors,should therefore take steps to control its use.Originality/value:This is the first published attempt at post-publication expert review accuracy testing for ChatGPT.

Advanced Research Projects in the Humanities： New Trends on Literature, Languages, and Linguistics Studies

Following the author＇s own experiencing in supervising Ph.D. theses in literature, languages, linguistics, and teacher education, the author will focus on new trends of advanced research projects that have been contributing to reinforce the importance of research in these areas in a time of crisis in the humanities. The organization and funding of science and scholarship in Europe has been promoting anything else but social sciences research, including educational areas. The author will follow the recent call from the Board of Trustees da Academia Europaea to redirect policies toward the organization of multidisciplinary research projects. Among these so-called ＂small subjects＂, we will find original, inspired, and valuable research projects in the humanities, It is worth mentioning that the crisis that has been diminishing this type of scholarship strangely cohabits with several policies promoted by the European Commission and the Council of Europe to develop programs for plurilingual education and linguistic diversity, new framework strategies for multilingualism, and the use of new technologies for language teaching and learning. A strong emphasis on research projects leading to interdisciplinary studies involving literature and pure sciences, plus the development of outreach research projects will be proposed.

Research and findings related to language anxiety

Language anxiety plays an important role in language learning. It is closely related to learner variables, such as gender and beliefs. Negative correlations between language anxiety and achievement have been reported by various investigations. Speaking performance is a skill particularly affected by language anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy seems to have provided a promising solution to the problem of language anxiety, but the effect is not supported by some research. Further investigation related to the topic is still in need.

Recommender System for Information Retrieval Using Natural Language Querying Interface Based in Bibliographic Research for Naïve Users

With the increasing of data on the internet, data analysis has become inescapable to gain time and efficiency, especially in bibliographic information retrieval systems. We can estimate the number of actual scientific journals points to around 40,000 with about four million articles published each year. Machine learning and deep learning applied to recommender systems had become unavoidable whether in industry or in research. In this current, we propose an optimized interface for bibliographic information retrieval as a running example, which allows different kind of researchers to find their needs following some relevant criteria through natural language understanding. Papers indexed in Web of Science and Scopus are in high demand. Natural language including text and linguistic-based techniques, such as tokenization, named entity recognition, syntactic and semantic analysis, are used to express natural language queries. Our Interface uses association rules to find more related papers for recommendation. Spanning trees are challenged to optimize the search process of the system.

On the Combination of “The Textual Research on Historical Documents” and “The Comparative Study of Historical Data” —— and a Discussion on “The Law of Quan-ma and Gui-mei” in Chinese Language Studies

In Chinese language studies, both “The Textual Research on Historical Documents” and “The Comparative Study of Historical Data” are traditional in methodology and they both deserve being treasured, passed on, and further developed. It will certainly do harm to the development of academic research if any of the two methods is given unreasonable priority. The author claims that the best or one of the best methodologies of the historical study of Chinese language is the combination of the two, hence a new interpretation of “The Double-proof Method”. Meanwhile, this essay is also an attempt to put forward “The Law of Quan-ma and Gui-mei” in Chinese language studies, in which the author believes that it is not advisable to either treat Gui-mei as Quan-ma or vice versa in linguistic research. It is crucial for us to respect always the language facts first, which is considered the very soul of linguistics.

Database Research Method for Researches on International Chinese Language Teaching in an Era of Big Data

The database research method is a method that analyses, generalizes and deduces from the data of subject investigated with database techniques, quantitative statistics and mathematical models. As the big data age comes with the data explosion in modem society, the International Chinese Language Teaching （ICLT） shows signs of sizable data accumulation, remarkable economic property, strong modeling requirements and notable cross-research trends, which thus make this method necessary as a new and independent research method in the researches on this area. A Critical Review of Motivation in Second Language Acquisition Research

As one of the major factors affecting second language learners' success to their acquisition achievement,motivation has been examined in a wide variety of research papers.It is thus instructive to conduct a critical review of both theoretical and empirical developments in SLA research from over the last few decades.This approach will provide a broad,and integrated perspective onto the current understanding of the complextopic of motivation.Such an undertaking is valuable for teachers,and researchers alike,in developing useful teaching methods,and finding futureavenues of SLA motivation research respectively.The following paper provides an overview of recent theoretical and empirical findings,examines some of the problems and contradictions found in current SLA research,and gives an initial departure point for future directions of research in the area of motivation.The paper concludes with a discussion of some of the implications for teachers,and possible classroom strategies that are drawn from the current body of motivation research.

A Study on the Focuses and Fronts of International Second Language Acquisition Researches -Statistical Analysis of the Articles Published in Language Learning(2012-2016)

Keywords word frequency and co-word analysis are adopted in an attempt to to investigate the focuses and fronts of inter-national second language acquisition(SLA) researches by analyzing the key words in articles published in the internationally re-nowned SLA academic journal Language Learning from 2012 to 2016. It is found that the best researched topics in SLA are vocabu-lary acquisition, explicit knowledge, form-focused teaching, language use, and so on, among which learner's language attracts themost attention. In terms of research methods, they become more diversified and interdisciplinary, as empirical studies take a domi-nant position and experiments still play a leading role, displaying an interdisciplinary feature.

Research on the Second Language Writing from the Sociocultural Perspective

Based on the theoretical origin of sociocultural views,this paper reviews second language writing from the sociocultural perspective in recent years and puts forw ard suggestions for the follow-up study. Research from the sociocultural perspective adopts the overall qualitative research methods,with the sociocultural theories and dialogue theories being the framework,attaching importance to the writing process and social context,and concludes that the theoretical basis,research emphasis and methodology still needs perfection.

A Review of Universal Grammar Concerning Second Language Acquisition Research

Chomsky’s Universal Grammar(UG)theory not only answers"the logical problem of language acquisition",but also provides insights and thoughts for second language acquisition(SLA)research on both theoretical and empirical level.However,there are many problems of UG-based research.On the theoretical aspect,UG-based approach left untouched many areas apart from"core grammar"and the continual development of the theory is problematic to second language researchers.On the empirical aspects,most experiments reveal problems with the design and data collection process.In short,the evaluation of UG concerning SLA should be developmental and comprehensive.

Language Training Centers: Factors Related to Their Success

A survey of language training centers(LTCs)in Dalian,China was conducted,to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses,or the differentiating factors,of such centers.The survey was undertaken to understand the current landscape of after-school institutes in the region,particularly those that offer training in English as a second/foreign language.The information uncovered by the research is considered beneficial not only to entrepreneurs who may wish to be involved in this industry,but also to college English majors who may wish to teach at an LTC.
