For instance, it may produce some students who are good in grammatical achievements but lacking in responding to the actual situation. Therefore linguistic knowledge is not the whole field that English teaching should touch upon. Inducing from two instances, this article presents the importance of communicative ability and cross-cultural competence in China's English teaching, together with proper solutions. 展开更多

As a means of communication,English has been internationalized.Communication in English always happens among the seafarers from different cultures. If crews couldn’t deal with the cultural differences well, successful communication and shipboard safety, which are just what STCW (Standards on Training,Certificate and Watch -keeping) calls upon, are difficult to be arrived at. Therefore cross -cultural communicative competence training,or how to teach maritime spoken English is the problem or the challenge that we,English teachers, are facing. To show how the teaching can be made more efficient and practical so as to narrow the gap between the training of the seaman in China and the requirements of STCW,through the teaching process, including the syllabus design and the materials selecting,we must consider the notion of language function as the key point. 展开更多

Background: Motor competence and health-related fitness are important components for the development and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle in children. This study examined cross-cultural performances on motor competence and health-related fitness between Portuguese and U.S.children.Methods: Portuguese(n = 508; 10.14 § 2.13 years, mean § SD) and U.S.(n = 710; 9.48 § 1.62 years) children performed tests of cardiorespiratory fitness(Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run), upper body strength(handgrip), locomotor skill performance(standing long jump), and object projection skill performance(throwing and kicking). Portuguese and U.S. children were divided into 2 age groups(6à9 and 10à13 years) for data analysis purposes. A twoàfactor oneàway analysis of covariance(ANOVA) was conducted with the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run, handgrip, standing long jump scores, kicking, and throwing speed(km/h) as dependent variables. Results: Results indicated that Portuguese children, irrespective of sex, presented better performances in locomotor and cardiorespiratory performance(standing long jump and Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) than U.S. children in both age bands. U.S. children outperformed Portuguese children during throwing and handgrip tests. Kicking tests presented gender differences: Portuguese boys and U.S. girls outperformed their internationally matched counterparts. Conclusion: Cultural differences in physical education curricula and sports participation may impact differences in motor competence and fitness development in these countries. 展开更多

This research compares a sample of the mainland Chinese university students (N = 325) and a sample of the British university students (N = 51) from a cross-cultural perspective by examining the relationships between individual values and communicative competence. Specifically, it aims to gain an insight into cultural impact both on the Chinese university students' self-perceptions of communication competence in the Chinese cultural context and on the British university students' self-perceptions of communication competence in a Western cultural context. The findings suggest that the mainland Chinese university students' interdependent/independent self-construals best predict their self-perceptions of communication competence. Results indicate that both Western and Chinese social values influence the two samples' interdependent and independent self-construals, and the two samples' self-perceptions of communication competence and interdependent self-construals differ significantly 展开更多

Due to the social and cultural differences, people from different countries would always encounter pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication, which may lead to the breakdown of communication. In light of Thomas'(1983) classification of pragmatic failure, this article firstly analyzes the types of pragmatic failure in Sinowestern cross-cultural communication and their underlying factors. Then, the article tries to explore the strategies for avoiding such pragmatic failures and improving Chinese EFL(English as a Foreign Language) learners' communication competence from the perspective of English instruction. In Sino-western cross-cultural communication, there are mainly two types of pragmatic failure:pragmalinguistic failure and socio-pragmatic failure.Cultural difference and negative transfer of the mother language are the major factors for pragmatic failure. In English teaching, teachers should arouse students' cross-cultural awareness, effectively combine cultural instruction with language teaching, carry out extra-curricular cross-cultural communication activities, and develop students' good habit of leaning English. 展开更多

This article reviews preservice teacher arts education university course work with the goal of informing cross-cultural competencies for Indonesian teacher education. The authors are mid-career education faculty, who visited six universities in three countries to observe cross-cultural contents in teacher preparation courses.Cross-cultural competence relies on theories of globalization, intercultural and multicultural education.Using a case study method, the authors gathered data through relevant literature, course descriptions, met with stakeholders, wrote and coded reflective and reflexive field notes, and identified trends. These trends included the infusion of Eastern content into Western course work, and the role of Western arts forms in Eastern settings. These findings support the development of“cross-cultural communication through the arts”or“komunikasi silang budaya melalui seni”as a way of approaching cross-cultural teaching in Indonesia. 展开更多

Although a large number of studies have focused on various aspects of politeness, very little is known about how politeness intention is activated cognitively during verbal communication. The present study aims to explore the cognitive mechanism of politeness intention processing, and how it is related to pragmatic failure during cross-cultural communication.Using 30 Chinese EFL university students who were instructed to finish a probe word judgment task with 96 virtual scenarios, the results indicate that within both mono-and cross-cultural contexts, the response time in the experimental scenarios was significantly slower than that of the filler scenarios. This suggests that politeness intention was activated while understanding the surface meaning of the conversation;however, the EFL learners could not completely avoid the negative transfer of their native politeness conventions when they were comprehending the conversational intention of the target language.Furthermore,no significant differences in response time were found between the groups with high and low English pragmatic competence, illustrating that transferring the pragmatic rules and principles into cross-cultural communication skills was more cognitively demanding.Overall, this study adds to the literature on politeness research and provides some implications for foreign language pragmatic instructions. 展开更多

It has historically been very difficult to trace the history of the westward transmission of Chinese medicine through the accounts of its protagonists. Many of the early scholars such as Jack Worsley, Dick Van Buren, and Joe Goodman were reluctant to divulge information about the source of their knowledge, or their professional qualifications. Others, such as John Shen and Hong Yuan-bain were early 20th century immigrants who transmitted highly personalized versions of acupuncture and Chinese medicine to select disciples. Eventually, a new class of scholars appeared, including names such as Ted Kaptchuk, Peter Deadman, Nigel Wiseman, William Morris, Peter Eckman, John Mc Donald, Charles Buck, and the late Giovanni Maciocia who looked for answers back in China, developed translation methodologies and terminology, compiled the main textbooks currently in use at TCM colleges, overcame enormous scholastic adversity, developed courses and pursued the regulation and accreditation of TCM in various countries. This special issue synopsizes the path towards the global acculturation of TCM over the last 50 years, the main protagonists, the enormous accomplishments they have achieved for the profession, their philosophy, their clinical perspectives and visions for the future. 展开更多

International Chinese teachers are one of the determinants of the quality development of Confucius Institutes, and their cross-cultural sociocultural adaption, psychological adaption, and job adaption are in need of in-depth investigation and research.Based on previous research, this paper analyzed the cross-cultural adaptation of international Chinese teachers at Confucius Institutes in South Korea during 2022-2023 through surveys and personal interviews. The study found that the teachers’adaptation was best in terms of work, followed by sociocultural adaptation, and weakest in terms of psychological adaptation. In terms of work adaptation, attention should be focused on adapting to teaching language and teaching methods. In terms of sociocultural adaptation, the focus should be on adapting to personal communication. In terms of psychological adaptation, attention should be paid to feelings of loneliness and anxiety. The study also focused on the internal and external factors influencing their cross-cultural adaptation,as well as the true inner feelings of international Chinese teachers. The study found that factors such as English proficiency, gender, education, professional background, and overseas experience had little impact on teachers’cross-cultural adaptation, while factors such as Korean proficiency, participation in cross-cultural training before going to South Korea, understanding of Korean culture before going to South Korea, and length of time spent in working in South Korea had a greater impact on the cross-cultural adaptation of the research subjects. This study provides reliable reference materials for international Chinese teachers going to South Korea to improve their cross-cultural adaptation abilities and promote the reform and innovation of international Chinese education. 展开更多
