The corrosion resistance and antibacterial properties of Ti−3Cu alloy prepared by selective laser melting were evaluated using electrochemical experiments and a variety of antibacterial characterization. It is found that the charge transfer resistance of Ti−3Cu alloy was 4.89×10^(5)Ω∙cm^(2),which was doubled the data obtained by CP-Ti alloy. The antibacterial rates of Ti−3Cu alloy against S.mutans and P.gingivalis were 45.0%and 54.5%.And the antibacterial rates increased with the prolongation of cultivation time, reaching up to 62.8%and 68.6%,respectively.The in-situ nano Ti_(2)Cu precipitates were homogeneously distributed in the matrix of the Ti−3Cu alloy, which was the key reason of increasing the corrosion resistance.Additionally, the microscale electric fields between theα-Ti matrix and the Ti_(2)Cu was responsible for the enhancement of the antibacterial properties. 展开更多

This study aims to clarify the mechanisms for the grain boundary(GB)segregation through investigating the absorption of excess solute atoms at GBs in Al−Cu alloys by using the hybrid molecular dynamics/Monte Carlo simulations. Two segregation mechanisms, substitutional and interstitial mechanisms, are observed. The intergranular defects, including dislocations, steps and vacancies, and the intervals in structural units are conductive to the prevalence of interstitial mechanism. And substitutional mechanism is favored by the highly ordered twin GBs.Furthermore, the two mechanisms affect the GB structure differently. It is quantified that interstitial mechanism is less destructive to GB structure than substitutional one,and often leads to a segregation level being up to about 6 times higher than the latter. These findings contribute to atomic scale insights into the microscopic mechanisms about how solute atoms are absorbed by GB structures, and clarify the correlation among intergranular structures, segregation mechanisms and kinetics. 展开更多

This study investigated the influence of graded Zn content on the evolution of precipitated and iron-rich phases and grain struc-ture of the alloys, designed and developed the Al–8.0Zn–1.5Mg–1.5Cu–0.2Fe(wt%)alloy with high strength and formability. With the increase of Zn content, forming the coupling distribution of multiscale precipitates and iron-rich phases with a reasonable matching ratio and dispersion distribution characteristics is easy. This phenomenon induces the formation of cell-like structures with alternate distribu-tion of coarse and fine grains, and the average plasticity–strain ratio(characterizing the formability)of the pre-aged alloy with a high strength is up to 0.708.Results reveal the evolution and influence mechanisms of multiscale second-phase particles and the corresponding high formability mechanism of the alloys. The developed coupling control process exhibits considerable potential, revealing remarkable improvements in the room temperature formability of high-strength Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloys. 展开更多

A novel process for manufacturing A1-0.70Fe-0.24Cu alloy conductor was proposed, which includes horizontal continuous casting and subsequent continuous extrusion forming (Conform). The mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and the compressed creep behaviour of the alloy were studied. The results indicate that the Conform process induces obvious grain refinement, strain-induced precipitation of AI7CuzFe phase and the transformation of crystal orientation distribution. The processed alloy has good comprehensive mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. Moreover, a better creep resistance under the conditions of 90 ~C and 76 MPa is shown compared with pure A1 and annealed copper, and the relationship between primary creep strain and time may comply with the logarithmic law. The enhanced properties are attributed to the grain refinement as well as the fine and homogeneously distributed thermally stable A1Fe and A17Cu2Fe precipitation phases. 展开更多

The effects of minor Sc and Zr additions on the mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of Al Zn Mg Cu alloys were studied using tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The ultimate tensile strength of the peak-aged Al Zn Mg Cu alloy is improved by about 105 MPa with the addition of 0.10% Zr. An increase of about 133 MPa is observed with the joint addition of 0.07% Sc and 0.07% Zr. For the alloys modified with the minor addition of Sc and Zr (0.14%), the main strengthening mechanisms of minor addition of Sc and Zr are fine-grain strengthening, sub-structure strengthening and the Orowan strengthening mechanism produced by the Al3(Sc,Zr) and Al3Zr dispersoids. The volume of Al3Zr particles is less than that of Al3(Sc,Zr) particles, but the distribution of Al3(Sc,Zr) particles is more dispersed throughout the matrix leading to pinning the dislocations motion and restraining the recrystallization more effectively. 展开更多

The influence of Si addition on microstructure, mechanical properties and thermal fatigue behavior of Zn-38Al-2.5Cu alloys was investigated. The results show that constitutional supercooling of ZA38 alloys is formed because of the Si addition. Zn-38Al-2.5Cu-0.55Si alloy shows the dramatically refined microstructure and the best mechanical properties. When the Si addition exceeds 0.55%,αdendrites develop and Si phases become larger and aggregate along the dendrites boundaries, decreasing the mechanical properties. Oxides and pits formed by the plastic deformation are the main factors of cracks initiation. During the early stage of crack propagation, the cracks grow at a high speed well described by Paris law because of the porous and loose oxide, and mainly propagate along the dendrites boundaries. During the slow-growth stage, secondary cracks share the energy of crack growth, delaying the propagation of cracks, and the cracks propagate and fracture by the mixture of intergranular and transgranular modes. 展开更多

The Zn,Cu,and Sc contents of 7xxx Al alloys were adjusted according to the chemical composition of a 7085 Al alloy, and the effects of Zn and Cu contents and Sc addition on the microstructures, hardness, and quench sensitivity of the 7xxx Al alloys were studied. The alloys with high Zn content and Sc addition exhibited higher hardness than the 7085 alloy at the position 3 mm away from the quenching end.The density ofηand T phases increased with the increase in Zn and Cu contents, and the Sc addition led to the formation of the Y phase and moreηphases at the position 120 mm away from the quenching end.Compared with the 7085 alloy, the high Zn−high Cu and Sc-added alloys exhibited higher quench sensitivity, while the simultaneous increase in Zn content and decrease in Cu content could enhance the hardness and reduce the quench sensitivity of the 7085 alloy. 展开更多

In order to simultaneously improve strength and formability,an analytical model for the concentration distribution of precipitates and solute elements is established and used to theoretically design and control the heterogeneous microstructure of Al−Zn−Mg−Cu alloys. The results show that the dissolution of precipitates is mainly affected by particle size and heat treatment temperature, the heterogeneous distribution level of solute elements diffused in the alloy matrix mainly depends on the grain size, while the heat treatment temperature only has an obvious effect on the concentration distribution in the larger grains, and the experimental results of Al−Zn−Mg−Cu alloy are in good agreement with the theoretical model predictions of precipitates and solute element concentration distribution.Controlling the concentration distribution of precipitates and solute elements in Al−Zn−Mg−Cu alloys is the premise of accurately constructing heterogeneous microstructure in micro-domains,which can be used to significantly improve the formability of Al−Zn−Mg−Cu alloys with a heterostructure. 展开更多

The relationship among heating rate, mechanical properties, microstructure and texture of Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy during solution treatment was investigated through tensile test, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer and EBSD technology. The experimental results reveal that there is a non-monotonic relationship among solution heating rate, mechanical properties, microstructure and texture. As the solution heating rate increases, the strength variations are dependent on the tensile direction;work hardening exponent n decreases first, and then increases;plastic strain ratio r increases first, and then decreases, and finally increases. The final microstructure and texture are also affected by heating rate. As heating rate increases, the microstructure transforms from elongated grain structure to equiaxed grain structure, and the average grain size decreases first, and then increases, and decreases finally. Although the texture components including CubeND{001}<310> and P{011}<122> orientations almost have no change with the increase of heating rate, the texture intensity and volume fraction decrease first, and then increase, and finally decrease. Both microstructure and texture evolutions are weakly affected by heating rate. Improving heating rate is not always favorable for the development of fine equiaxed grain structure, weak texture and high average r value, which may be related to the recrystallization behavior. 展开更多

The hot deformation behavior of as-solutionized Mg 8Sn 2Zn 0.5Cu(TZC820)alloy was investigated experimentally and numerically via isothermal compression tests at 250400℃and strain rate range of 0.013 s 1 on a Gleeble 1500D thermomechanical simulator. Results show that the deformation temperature and strain rate signi cantly affected ow stress and material constants. In addition, the strain-compensated constitutive relationship was established on the basis of true stress strain curves. The main deformation mechanism for this alloy was the dynamic recrystallization(DRX),and the DRX degree was effectively enhanced with an increase in deformation temperature and a decrease in strain rate. Moreover, the cellular automaton method was used to simulate the microstructure evolution during hot compression. In addition, the processing maps were established, and the optimum deformation parameters for the as-solutionized TZC820 alloy are at 370400℃and 0.01 s 1,and at 320360℃and 13 s 1. 展开更多

The effect of pre-straining on the structure and formation mechanism of precipitates in an Al−Mg−Si−Cu alloy was systematically investigated by atomic resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy(HAADF-STEM).Elongated and string-like precipitates are formed along the dislocations in the pre-strained Al−Mg−Si−Cu alloy. The precipitates formed along the dislocations exhibit three features:non-periodic atomic arrangement within the precipitate;Cu segregation occurring at the precipitate/α(Al)interface;different orientations presented in one individual precipitate.Four different formation mechanisms of these heterogeneous precipitates were proposed as follows:elongated precipitates are formed independently in the dislocation;string-like precipitates are formed directly along the dislocations;different precipitates encounter to form string-like precipitates;precipitates are connected by other phases or solute enrichment regions. These different formation mechanisms are responsible for forming different atomic structures and morphologies of precipitates. 展开更多

The properties of Sc-dopedθ′(Al_(2)Cu)/Al interface in Al−Cu alloys were investigated by first-principles calculations.Sc-doped semi-coherent and coherentθ′(Al_(2)Cu)/Al interfaces(Sc doped in Al slab(S1 site),Sc doped inθ′slab(S2 site))were modeled based on calculated results and reported experiments.Through the analysis of interfacial bonding strength,it is revealed that the doping of Sc at S1 site can significantly decrease the interface energy and increase the work of adhesion. In particular, the doped coherent interface with Sc at S1 site which is occupied by interstitial Cu atoms has very good bonding strength. The electronic structure shows the strong Al—Cu bonds at the interfaces with Sc at S1 site, and the Al—Al bonds at the interfaces with Sc at S2 site are formed. The formation of strong Al—Cu and Al—Al bonds plays an important role in the enhancement of doped interface strength. 展开更多

Hardness tests and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the strategy of tailoring the phase fraction of precipitates in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy strengthened by T’ and η’ phases. Different phase fractions of T’ and η’ phases are presented in samples subjected to either single or two stages of ageing treatments at 120 and 150 ℃.For both types of ageing, the precipitation of η’ phase is found to be promoted by ageing at lower temperature and its phase fraction increases with prolonging ageing time at 120 ℃;whereas the phase fractions of T’ and η’ phases almost remain constant during ageing at 150 ℃. Besides, the strain fields produced by T’ and η’ phases were analyzed by using the geometric phase analysis technique, and on a macroscale the contributions of T’ and η’ phases to precipitation strengthening have been quantitatively predicted by combining the size, phase fraction and number density of precipitates. 展开更多

In order to improve the through-thickness homogeneity and properties of aviation aluminum alloy thick plate. The effect of heating-cooling retrogression and re-ageing on the performance of Al-8Zn-2Mg-2Cu alloy thick plate was investigated by hardness tests, electrical conductivity tests and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) observation. Results revealed that, during retrogression heating, the fine pre-precipitates in surface layer dissolve more and the undissolved η′ or η phases are more coarsened than that of center layer. During slow cooling after retrogression, precipitates continue coarsening but with a lower rate and the secondary precipitation occurs in both layers. Finer precipitates resulting from the secondary precipitation are more in surface. However, the coarsening and secondary precipitation behaviors are restrained in both layers under quick cooling condition. The electrical conductivity and through-thickness homogeneity of precipitates increases while the hardness decreases with cooling rate decreasing. After the optimized non-isothermal retrogression and re-ageing(NRRA) including air-cooling retrogression, the throughthickness homogeneity which is evaluated by integrated retrogression effects has been improved to 94%. The tensile strength, fracture toughness and exfoliation corrosion grade of Al-8Zn-2Mg-2Cu alloy plate is 619 MPa, 24.7 MPa·m^(1/2)and EB, respectively, which indicates that the non-isothermal retrogression and re-aging(NRRA) could improve the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance with higher through-thickness homogeneity. 展开更多

The microstructure and mechanical properties at different depths of squeeze-cast,solution-treated and aged Al−5.0Mg−3.0Zn−1.0Cu alloy were investigated. For squeeze-cast alloy, from casting surface to interior, the grain size ofα(Al)matrix and width of T-Mg32(AlZnCu)49 phase increase significantly, while the volume fraction of T phase decreases. The related mechanical properties including ultimate tensile strength(UTS)and elongation decrease from 243.7 MPa and 2.3%to 217.9 MPa and 1.4%,respectively.After solution treatment at 470℃ for 36 h,T phase is dissolved into matrix, and the grain size increases so that the UTS and elongation from surface to interior are respectively reduced from 387.8 MPa and 18.6%to 348.9 MPa and 13.9%.After further peak-aging at 120℃ for 24 h,numerous G.P.II zone andη′phase precipitate in matrix.Consequently,UTS values of the surface and interior increase to 449.5 and 421.4 MPa,while elongation values decrease to 12.5%and 8.1%,respectively. 展开更多

Dominant phase during hot deformation in the two-phase region of Zr-2.5Nb-0.5Cu (ZNC) alloy was studied using activation energy calculation of individual phases. Thermo-mechanical compression tests were performed on a two-phase ZNC alloy in the temperature range of 700-925 ℃ and strain rate range of 10-2-10 s-l, Flow stress data of the single phase were extrapolated in the two-phase range to calculate flow stress data of individual phases. Activation energies of individual phases were then calculated using calculated flow stress data in the two-phase range, Comparison of activation energies revealed that a phase is the dominant phase (deformation controlling phase) in the two-phase range. Constitutive equations were also developed on the basis of the deformation temperature range (or according to phases present) using a sine-hyperbolic type constitutive equation. The statistical analysis revealed that the constitutive equation developed for a particular phase showed good agreement with the experimental results in terms of correlation coefficient (R) and average absolute relative error (AARE). 展开更多

The effect of the quenching rate after solution treatment on the residual stress and precipitation behavior of a high strength Mg-5 Zn-3.5 Sn-1 Mn-0.5 Ca-0.5 Cu plate is studied. The simulation results show decreasing temperature gradient in the plate with decreasing quenching rate, which leads to weakened inhomogeneous plastic deformation and decreased residual stress. No dynamic precipitation on the grain boundary happens after either cold water cooling or air cooling, however, air cooling leads to dynamic precipitation of Mg-Zn phase on Mn particles around which a low-density precipitate zone develops after aging treatment. Moreover, the fine and densely distributed Mg-Zn precipitates observed after aging treatment of the cold water cooled alloy are replaced by coarse precipitates with low density for the air cooled alloy. Both the low-density precipitate zone near Mn particles and the coarsening of precipitates are the source of the decrease in hardness and tensile properties of the air cooled alloy. The residual stress drops faster than the hardness with decreasing quenching rate, which makes it possible to lower the residual stress without sacrificing too much age-hardening ability of the alloy. 展开更多

The objective of the work is focused on predictions of microsegregation, solidification speed, dendritic arm spacings and dendrite morphology by phase-field model. The numerical results were compared with experimental data. The experimental values for cooling rates and effective partition coefficient were adopted during calculations. The results of microsegregation through phase-field model show excellent agreement with the experimental data.Such excellent agreement is because cooling rates, effective partition coefficient and back-diffusion of solute are considered in the model. For solidification speed, the calculation results show good agreement with the experimental data.Tertiary dendritic arm spacing calculated with phase-field model is compared with experimental data. The results show good agreement between them. The dendrite arm spacing varies with position because high cooling rates are responsible for the refinement effect on microstructure.Finally,two-dimensional simulation produced a dendrite that is similar to that found in the experiment. 展开更多

Methanol synthesis from CO_(2)hydrogenation catalyzed by Zn/Cu alloy has been widely studied, but there is still debate on its catalytic active phase and whether the Zn can be oxidized during the reaction process. What is more,as Zn atoms could locate on Zn/Cu alloy surface in forms of both single atom and cluster, how Zn surface distribution affects catalytic activity is still not clear. In this work,we performed a systematic theoretical study to compare the mechanistic natures and catalytic pathways between Zn single atom and small cluster on catalyst surface, where the surface oxidation was shown to play the critical role. Before surface oxidation, the Zn single atom/Cu is more active than the Zn small cluster/Cu,but its surface oxidation is difficult to take place.Instead, after the easy surface oxidation by CO_(2)decomposition,the oxidized Zn small cluster/Cu becomes much more active, which even exceeds the hardlyoxidized Zn single atom/Cu to become the active phase.Further analyses show this dramatic promotion of surface oxidation can be ascribed to the following factors:i)The O from surface oxidation could preferably occupy the strongest binding sites on the center of Zn cluster. That makes the O intermediates bind at the Zn/Cu interface, preventing their too tight binding for further hydrogenation;ii)The higher positive charge and work function on the oxidized surface could also promote the hydrogenation of O intermediates. This work provided one more example that under certain condition, the metal cluster can be more active than the single atom in heterogeneous catalysis. 展开更多
