The martensitic transformation temperature is the basis for the application of shape memory alloys(SMAs),and the ability to quickly and accurately predict the transformation temperature of SMAs has very important practical significance. In this work, machine learning(ML)methods were utilized to accelerate the search for shape memory alloys with targeted properties(phase transition temperature).A group of component data was selected to design shape memory alloys using reverse design method from numerous unexplored data.Component modeling and feature modeling were used to predict the phase transition temperature of the shape memory alloys. The experimental results of the shape memory alloys were obtained to verify the effectiveness of the support vector regression(SVR)model. The results show that the machine learning model can obtain target materials more efficiently and pertinently, and realize the accurate and rapid design of shape memory alloys with specific target phase transition temperature. On this basis, the relationship between phase transition temperature and material descriptors is analyzed, and it is proved that the key factors affecting the phase transition temperature of shape memory alloys are based on the strength of the bond energy between atoms. This work provides new ideas for the controllable design and performance optimization of Cu-based shape memory alloys. 展开更多

Mg-6Zn-2X(Fe/Cu/Ni)alloys were prepared through semi-continuous casting, with the aim of identifying a degradable magnesium(Mg)alloy suitable for use in fracturing balls.A comparative analysis was conducted to assess the impacts of adding Cu and Ni,which result in finer grains and the formation of galvanic corrosion sites.Scanner electronic microscopy examination revealed that precipitated phases concentrated at grain boundaries, forming a semi-continuous network structure that facilitated corrosion penetration in Mg-6Zn-2Cu and Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloys.Pitting corrosion was observed in Mg-6Zn-2Fe,while galvanic corrosion was identified as the primary mechanism in Mg-6Zn-2Cu and Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloys.Among the tests, the Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloy exhibited the highest corrosion rate(approximately 932.9 mm/a)due to its significant potential difference.Mechanical testing showed that Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloy possessed suitable ultimate compressive strength, making it a potential candidate material for degradable fracturing balls, effectively addressing the challenges of balancing strength and degradation rate in fracturing applications. 展开更多

Based on experiments and first-principles calculations, the microstructures and mechanical properties of as-cast and solution treated Mg-10Gd-4Y-xZn-0.6Zr(x=0,1,2,wt.%)alloys are investigated. The transformation process of long-period stacking ordered(LPSO)structure during solidification and heat treatment and its effect on the mechanical properties of experimental alloys are discussed. Results reveal that the stacking faults and 18R LPSO phases appear in the as-cast Mg-10Gd-4Y-1Zn-0.6Zr and Mg-10Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.6Zr alloys, respectively. After solution treatment, the stacking faults and 18R LPSO phase transform into 14H LPSO phase. The Enthalpies of formation and reaction energy of 14H and 18R LPSO are calculated based on first-principles.Results show that the alloying ability of 18R is stronger than that of 14H.The reaction energies show that the 14H LPSO phase is more stable than the 18R LPSO.The elastic properties of the 14H and 18R LPSO phases are also evaluated by first-principles calculations, and the results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The precipitation of LPSO phase improves the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of the alloy. After solution treatment, the Mg-10Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.6Zr alloy has the best mechanical properties, and its ultimate tensile strength and yield strength are 278.7 MPa and 196.4 MPa,respectively. The elongation of Mg-10Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.6Zr reaches 15.1,which is higher than that of Mg-10Gd-4Y0.6Zr alloy. The improving mechanism of elastic modulus by the LPSO phases and the influence on the alloy mechanical properties are also analyzed. 展开更多

The damage characteristics of different speed sections of Cu−Cr−Zr alloy rail after simulated launch were studied. The microstructure, morphologies and properties of samples were investigated by using XRD,XPS,EBSD,SEM,hardness test, electrochemical test and DSC techniques. It was found that deposition layers were formed on the surfaces of the simulated launch samples. The thickness and surface roughness of these deposition layers increased with increasing the heat effect, suggesting a launch speed dependent damage degree of the arc ablation. The hardness variation of samples is attributed to the effects of the deposition layer and deformation hardening. The surface deposition layer affects corrosion resistance and crystalline characteristics, leading to changes in subsequent service performances.Additionally, the surface texture and plastic deformation ability of the samples are related to the recrystallization degree and deformation grain amount. 展开更多

As a promising material in the aircraft industry,2A97 Al-Cu-Li alloy exhibits high corrosion susceptibility that may limit its application. In the present work,to illustrate the influences of precipitate and grain-stored energy on localized corrosion evolution in 2A97 Al-Cu-Li alloy, cold working and artificial aging were carried out to produce 2A97 Al-Cu-Li alloys under different thermomechanical conditions.Quasi-in-situ analysis, traditional immersion test and electrochemical measurement were then conducted to examine the corrosion behavior of 2A97 alloys. It is revealed that precipitate significantly affects Cu enrichment at corrosion fronts, which determines corrosion susceptibility of alloys, whereas grain-stored energy distribution is closely associated with localized corrosion propagation. It is also indicated that quasi-in-situ analysis exhibits a consistent corrosion evolution with traditional immersion tests, which is regarded as a proper method to explore localized corrosion mechanisms by providing local microstructural information with enhanced time and spatial resolutions. 展开更多

Multi-material laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) allows manufacturing of parts with 3-dimensional gradient and additional functionality in a single step. This research focuses on the combination of thermally-conductive CuCr1Zr with hard M300 tool steel. Two interface configurations of M300 on CuCr1Zr and CuCr1Zr on M300 were investigated. Ultra-fine grains form at the interface due to the low mutual solubility of Cu and steel. The material mixing zone size is dependent on the configurations and tunable in the range of0.1–0.3 mm by introducing a separate set of parameters for the interface layers. Microcracks and pores mainly occur in the transition zone.Regardless of these defects, the thermal diffusivity of bimetallic parts with 50vol% of CuCr1Zr significantly increases by 70%–150%compared to pure M300. The thermal diffusivity of CuCr1Zr and the hardness of M300 steel can be enhanced simultaneously by applying the aging heat treatment. 展开更多

The impact of cold rolling deformation, which was introduced after solid solution and before aging treatment,on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the as-extruded spray formed Al−9.8Zn−2.3Mg−1.73Cu−0.13Cr(wt.%)alloy,was investigated.SEM,TEM,and EBSD were used to analyze the microstructures, and tensile tests were conducted to assess mechanical properties. The results indicate that the D1-T6 sample, subjected to 25%cold rolling deformation, exhibits finer grains(3.35μm)compared to the D0-T6 sample(grain size of 4.23μm)without cold rolling.Cold rolling refines the grains that grow in solution treatment.Due to the combined effects of finer and more dispersed precipitates, higher dislocation density and smaller grains, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the D1-T6 sample can reach 663 and 737 MPa,respectively. In comparison to the as-extruded and D0-T6 samples, the yield strength of the D1-T6 sample increases by 415 and 92 MPa,respectively. 展开更多

The recrystallization and softening resistance of a Cu-6.5Fe-0.3Mg(mass fraction,%)alloy prepared by Process 1(cold rolling heat treatment)and Process 2(hot/cold rolling heat treatment)were studied using Vickers hardness tests, tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The softening temperature, hardness and tensile strength of the alloy prepared by Process 2 were 110°C,HV 15 and 114 MPa higher, respectively, than those of the alloy prepared by Process 1 after aging at 300°C.The recrystallization activation energy of the alloys prepared by Process 1 and Process 2 were 72.83 and 98.11 kJ/mol,respectively.The pinning effects of the precipitates of the two alloys on grain boundaries and dislocations were basically the same. The softening mechanism was mainly attributed to the loss of dislocation strengthening. The higher Fe fiber density inhibited the average free migration path of dislocations and grain boundary migration in the alloy, which was the main reason for higher softening temperature of the alloy prepared by Process 2. 展开更多

The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of a T8-aged Al-Cu-Li alloy with increased pre-deformation(0-15%) were investigated, revealing the microstructure-strength relationship and the intrinsic strengthening mechanism. The results show that increasing the pre-deformation levels remarkably improves the strength of the alloy but deteriorates its ductility.Dislocations introduced by pre-deformation effectively suppress the formation of Guinier-Preston(GP) zones and provide more nucleation sites for T1 precipitates. This leads to more intensive and finer T1 precipitates in the samples with higher pre-deformation levels.Simultaneously, the enhanced precipitation of T1 precipitates and inhibited formation of GP zones cause the decreases in number and sizes of θ′ precipitates. The quantitative descriptions of the strength contributions from different strengthening mechanisms reveal that strengthening contributions from T1 and θ′ precipitates decrease with increasing pre-deformation.The reduced diameters of T1 precipitates are primarily responsible for their weakened strengthening effects. Therefore, the improved strength of the T8-aged Al-Cu-Li alloy is mainly attributed to the stronger strain hardening from the increased pre-deformation levels. 展开更多

This study investigated the influence of graded Zn content on the evolution of precipitated and iron-rich phases and grain struc-ture of the alloys, designed and developed the Al–8.0Zn–1.5Mg–1.5Cu–0.2Fe(wt%)alloy with high strength and formability. With the increase of Zn content, forming the coupling distribution of multiscale precipitates and iron-rich phases with a reasonable matching ratio and dispersion distribution characteristics is easy. This phenomenon induces the formation of cell-like structures with alternate distribu-tion of coarse and fine grains, and the average plasticity–strain ratio(characterizing the formability)of the pre-aged alloy with a high strength is up to 0.708.Results reveal the evolution and influence mechanisms of multiscale second-phase particles and the corresponding high formability mechanism of the alloys. The developed coupling control process exhibits considerable potential, revealing remarkable improvements in the room temperature formability of high-strength Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloys. 展开更多

The stability of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the pre-hardened sheets during the pre-hardening forming(PHF)process directly determines the quality of the formed components. The microstructure stability of the pre-hardened sheets was in-vestigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS),while the mechanical properties and formability were analyzed through uniaxial tensile tests and formability tests. The results in-dicate that the mechanical properties of the pre-hardened alloys exhibited negligible changes after experiencing 1-month natural aging(NA).The deviations of ultimate tensile strength(UTS),yield strength(YS),and sheet formability(Erichsen value)are all less than 2%.Also,after different NA time(from 48 h to 1 month)is applied to alloys before pre-hardening treatment, the pre-hardened alloys possess stable microstructure and mechanical properties as well.Interestingly, with the extension of NA time before pre-hardening treatment from 48 h to 1 month, the contribution of NA to the pre-hardening treatment is limited.Only a yield strength increment of 20 MPa is achieved, with no loss in elongation. The limited enhancement is mainly attributed to the fact that only a limited number of clusters are transformed into Guinier-Preston(GP)zones at the early stage of pre-hardening treatment, and the formation ofθ''phase inhibits the nucleation and growth of GP zones as the precipitated phase evolves. 展开更多

The evolution of mechanical properties, localized corrosion resistance of a high purity Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy during non-isothermal aging(NIA)was investigated by hardness test, electrical conductivity test, tensile test, intergranular corrosion test, exfoliation corrosion test, slow strain rate tensile test and electrochemical test, and the mechanism has been discussed based on microstructure examination by optical microscopy, electron back scattered diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The NIA treatment includes a heating stage from 40℃to 180℃with a rate of 20℃/h and a cooling stage from 180℃to 40℃with a rate of 10℃/h.The results show that the hardness and strength increase rapidly during the heating stage of NIA since the increasing temperature favors the nucleation and the growth of strengthening precipitates and promotes the transformation of Guinier-Preston(GPI)zones toη'phase.During the cooling stage, the sizes ofη'phase increase with a little change in the number density, leading to a further slight increase of the hardness and strength. As NIA proceeds, the corroded morphology in the alloy changes from a layering feature to a wavy feature, the maximum corrosion depth decreases, and the reason has been analyzed based on the microstructural and microchemical feature of precipitates at grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries. 展开更多

Magnesium(Mg)and its alloys are emerging as a structural material for the aerospace, automobile, and electronics industries, driven by the imperative of weight reduction. They are also drawing notable attention in the medical industries owing to their biodegradability and a lower elastic modulus comparable to bone. The ability to manufacture near-net shape products featuring intricate geometries has sparked huge interest in additive manufacturing(AM)of Mg alloys, reflecting a transformation in the manufacturing sectors. However,AM of Mg alloys presents more formidable challenges due to inherent properties, particularly susceptibility to oxidation, gas trapping, high thermal expansion coefficient, and low solidification temperature. This leads to defects such as porosity, lack of fusion, cracking, delamination, residual stresses, and inhomogeneity, ultimately influencing the mechanical, corrosion, and surface properties of AM Mg alloys. To address these issues,post-processing of AM Mg alloys are often needed to make them suitable for application. The present article reviews all post-processing techniques adapted for AM Mg alloys to date, including heat treatment, hot isostatic pressing, friction stir processing, and surface peening. The utilization of these methods within the hybrid AM process, employing interlayer post-processing,is also discussed.Optimal post-processing conditions are reported, and their influence on the microstructure, mechanical, and corrosion properties are detailed.Additionally, future prospects and research directions are proposed. 展开更多

Constructing a functional hybrid coating appears to be a promising strategy for addressing the poor corrosion resistance and insufficient endothelialization of Mg-based stents.Nevertheless, the steps for preparing composite coatings are usually complicated and time-consuming.Herein,a novel composite coating, composed of bioactive magnesium thioctic acid(MTA)layer formed by deposition and corrosion-resistant magnesium hydroxide(Mg(OH)_(2))layer grown in situ,is simply fabricated on ZE21B alloys via one-step electrodeposition.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)shows that the electrodeposited coating has a compact and uniform structure. And the high adhesion of the MTA/Mg(OH)_(2)hybrid coating is also confirmed by the micro-scratch test.Electrochemical test, scanning kelvin probe(SKP),and hydrogen evolution measurement indicate that the hybrid coating effectively reduces the degradation rate of Mg substrates.Haemocompatibility experiment and cell culture trial detect that the composite coating is of fine biocompatibility. Finally, the preparation mechanism of MTA/Mg(OH)_(2)hybrid coatings is discussed and proposed. This coating shows a great potential application for cardiovascular stents. 展开更多

To improve the comprehensive mechanical properties of Al-Si-Cu alloy,it was treated by a high-pressure torsion process, and the effect of the deformation degree on the microstructure and properties of the Al-Si-Cu alloy was studied. The results show that the reinforcements(β-Si andθ-CuAl_(2)phases)of the Al-Si-Cu alloy are dispersed in theα-Al matrix phase with finer phase size after the treatment. The processed samples exhibit grain sizes in the submicron or even nanometer range, which effectively improves the mechanical properties of the material. The hardness and strength of the deformed alloy are both significantly raised to 268 HV and 390.04 MPa by 10 turns HPT process, and the fracture morphology shows that the material gradually transits from brittle to plastic before and after deformation. The elements interdiffusion at the interface between the phases has also been effectively enhanced. In addition,it is found that the severe plastic deformation at room temperature induces a ternary eutectic reaction, resulting in the formation of ternary Al+Si+CuAl_(2)eutectic. 展开更多

Four typical theories on the formation of thermal tears:strength, liquid film, intergranular bridging, and solidifica-tion shrinkage compensation theories. From these theories,a number of criteria have been derived for predicting the formation of thermal cracks, such as the stress-based Niyama,Clyne, and RDG(Rapaz-Dreiser-Grimaud)criteria.In this paper,a mathematical model of horizontal centrifugal casting was established, and numerical simulation analysis was conducted for the centrifugal casting process of cylindrical Al-Cu alloy castings to investigate the effect of the centrifugal casting process conditions on the microstructure and hot tearing sensitivity of alloy castings by using the modified RDG hot tearing criterion. Results show that increasing the centrifugal rotation and pouring speeds can refine the microstructure of the alloy but increasing the pouring and mold preheating temperatures can lead to an increase in grain size. The grain size gradually transitions from fine grain on the outer layer to coarse grain on the inner layer.Meanwhile, combined with the modified RDG hot tearing criterion, the overall distribution of the castings’hot tearing sensitivity was analyzed. The analysis results indicate that the porosity in the middle region of the casting was large, and hot tearing defects were prone to occur. The hot tearing tendency on the inner side of the casting was greater than that on the outer side. The effects of centrifugal rotation speed, pouring temperature, and preheating temperature on the thermal sensitivity of Al-Cu alloy castings are summarized in this paper. This study revealed that the tendency of alloy hot cracking decreases with the increase of the centrifugal speed, and the maximum porosity of castings decreases first and then increases with the pouring temperature. As the preheating temperature increases, the overall maximum porosity of castings shows a decreasing trend. 展开更多
