Applying Design Thinking in Ecotourism Curriculum Design: The Educational Design Ladder

The design thinking approach transforms student’s learning process to connect with real-world experience, making connections between knowledge and improving critical thinking and problem-solving capability. Previous research has focused on what design thinking is taught (content) and how it is taught (learning modes and assessment). However, there needs to be an integrative approach in the context of ecotourism education. Therefore, applying Wrigley and Straker’s Educational Design Ladder mode, this study develops an Ecotourism Design Thinking Curriculum framework to combine the ecotourism content, teaching/learning mode and assessment.

A Knowledge Graph based Software Engineering Curriculum Design Method

New theories,methodologies,and technologies have been continuously invented and widely applied in modern software development,along with many new tools and best practices that are of remarkable significance in the software industry.In Software Engineering(SE)programs of universities,it is quite difficult for their curricula to chase after the fast-evolving technology trend.As a consequence,there have been significant challenges in designing an evolvable SE curriculum.In this paper,we present a knowledge graph based curriculum design method for SE programs.Knowledge Points(KPs)are organized into a multi-layer and multi-dimensionally annotated knowledge graph called SEKG,and five principles are applied to partition the SEKG into a set of inter-related courses.Metrics for evaluating the quality of an SE curriculum are briefly discussed.This method can not only help design a systematic curriculum from existing software engineering KPs but also facilitate curriculum evolution to adapt to technology trends.

The launch of the multivariate English education in institutions of higher learning in our country and the curriculum design

At present, with the further deepening of the integration of the world economy, the international exchanges and cooperation continue to increase, and the training mode of the talents must also be internationalized. The students should receive the cultivation of the professional knowledge, and at the same time, they must have a certain ability of the cross-cultural communication and the level of the professional English. In addition, the national medium and long-term educational reform and development plan （2010 - 2020） also proposed the strategic requirements to improve the quality of the higher education and the level of the internationalization, to promote the comprehensive development of the students. Because of this, the national big colleges and universities are carrying out the reform of the university English teaching in different degrees, and have achieved certain results. But today, in terms of the direction of the educational reform of the university English, the academic circles are still unable to reach an agreement. For example, to set the university courses in English, some scholars believe that because the English levels of the high school graduates enhance unceasingly, the courses with the language teaching as the main contents cannot meet the needs of the students, which need to be reduced or even eliminated, and should be replaced by the bilingual teaching with the liberal education as the contents. Also some scholars advocated that the orientation of the university English teaching in the future should be the ESP teaching or the academic English teaching, rather than the traditional English teaching for the humanities.

A Needs-analysis Approach to Postgraduate English Curriculum Design in Chinese Agriculture and Forestry Universities——A Case Study of Shandong Agricultural University

In order to investigate the curriculum design for postgraduate English in Agriculture and Forestry Colleges, this papermakes great attempts to probe into the target needs and learning needs of English in SDAU. Both quantitative and qualitative re-search methods were employed in the survey. The final conclusion of this study is that the current English curriculum design forpostgraduate in SDAU can not satisfy the needs of students and workplace completely. On the basis of such major findings and re-sults, this paper makes attempts to develop an English curriculum design and implementing model for postgraduate English teach-ing in SDAU, hoping to offer implications on curriculum design of postgraduate English in Agriculture and Forestry Colleges and of-fer suggestions on personalized teaching reform of postgraduate English.

Designing a medical ethics curriculum in ophthalmology

Ethical principles form a bedrock to medical practice in any specialty,guiding physicians to appropriate attitudes and behaviors.A formal ethics curriculum can be difficult to generate de novo in an ophthalmology training program.A number of barriers exist in most ophthalmology departments:trainees may think ethics is of secondary importance compared to core basic and clinical science topics;most ophthalmology faculty have no formal degree in medical ethics;there is limited didactic time with competing academic,clinical,and surgical priorities;work-hours regulations may limit the time available to deliver“para-professional”lectures;and there is a belief that the medical ethics lectures during medical school is a sufficient amount of coursework to last through a physician’s career with no need for continuing professional development.The four pillars of medical ethics are beneficence,non-maleficence,autonomy,and justice.In addition,morals,ethics,and professionalism are important aspects of sound medical practice.A curriculum specific to medical ethics in ophthalmology can be developed in any of our sub-specialties and include lectures,curated readings,case rounds,and clinic wrap-up sessions.Ethical considerations are part of everyday clinical practice,and a structured ethics curriculum can be incorporated into ophthalmology training programs.The concept of backward design can be used to structure the curriculum,starting with the expected outcome,then designing authentic assessments,and finally putting together a learning plan that has students actively involved in ethical discussions.This paper will provide a guide to developing an ethics curriculum for an ophthalmology training program utilizing the concept of backwards design and guide the reader through the process of developing expected learning outcomes,authentic assessments,and a unified learning plan.

Making Sense of Interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum Design: Case Study of Common Core Curriculum at the University of Hong Kong

Purpose:This research is an interview-based study that captures the academics’perspectives toward the planning and design of an interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum for undergraduate students in the Chinese context,using the Common Core Curriculum at the University of Hong Kong as a case study.Design/Approach/Methods:A total of 28 academics with various levels of academic ranking,disciplinary context,proven teaching excellence,and research productivities were individually invited for and consented to a semi-structured and face-to-face interview.Findings:This article suggests four fundamental and interrelated dimensions for consideration when structuring an interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum,namely,how to design,what is worth learning,how to learn and teach,and how to know students have learned.It is suggested that the ideal curriculum should remain coherent and coordinated,broad and balanced,as well as open and flexible,ensuring the capture of knowledge,skills,and attitudes,with the facilitation of active,authentic,and contextualized pedagogies and assessments.Originality/Value:This article has the potential of providing insight for policymakers and educators around the world to better structure an interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum by creating an overall springboard for future discussion.They can also integrate these evidence-based elements and strategies into their everyday practices.
