The flows past a number 3900 are simulated circular cylinder at Reynolds using large-eddy simulation (LES) and the far-field sound is calculated from the LES results. A low dissipation energy-conserving finite volume scheme is used to discretize the incompressible Navier- Stokes equations. The dynamic global coefficient version of the Vreman's subgrid scale (SGS) model is used to com- pute the sub-grid stresses. Curie's integral of Lighthill's acoustic analogy is used to extract the sound radiated from the cylinder. The profiles of mean velocity and turbulent fluctua- tions obtained are consistent with the previous experimental and computational results. The sound radiation at far field exhibits the characteristic of a dipole and directivity. The sound spectra display the -5/3 power law. It is shown that Vreman's SGS model in company with dynamic procedure is suitable for LES of turbulence generated noise. 展开更多

A coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics-Discrete Element Method(CFD-DEM)approach is used to calculate the interaction of a flexible rag transported by a fluid current with a fixed solid cylinder.More specifically a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian approach is used with the rag being modeled as a set of interconnected particles. The influence of various parameters is considered, namely the inlet velocity(1.5,2.0,and 2.5 m/s,respectively),the angle formed by the initially straight rag with the flow direction(45°,60°and 90°,respectively),and the inlet position(90,100,and 110 mm,respectively). The results show that the flow rate has a significant impact on the permeability of the rag.The higher the flow rate, the higher the permeability and the rag speed difference. The angle has a minor effect on rag permeability, with 45°being the most favorable angle for permeability. The inlet position has a small impact on rag permeability, while reducing the initial distance between the rag an the cylinder makes it easier for rags to pass through. 展开更多

The hydrodynamic characteristics of a rigid, single, circular cylinder in a three dimensional, incompressible, uniform cross flow were calculated using the large-eddy simulation method of CFX5. Solutions to the three dimensional N-S equations were obtained by the finite volume method. The focus of this numerical simulation was to research the characteristics of pressure distribution (drag and litt forces) and vortex tubes at high Reynolds numbers. The results of the calculations showed that the forces at every section in the spanwise direction of the cylinder were symmetrical about the middle section and smaller than the forces calculated in two dimensional cases. Moreover, the flow around the cylinder obviously presents three dimensional characteristics. 展开更多

A collocated finite volume method on unstructured meshes is introduced to simulate the viscoelastic flow of the polymer melt with viscous dissipation past a confined cylinder. The constitutive equation for the simulations is non-isothermal FENE-P model, which is derived from the molecular theories. The temperature effect on the macroscopic fields(e.g.,velocity,stress) and microscopic fields(e.g.,molecular orientation, deformation, stretch) is investigated by comparison of isothermal and non-isothermal situations. This investigation indicates that temperature rise caused by viscous dissipation should not be neglected since it has significant effect on the macroscopic and microscopic properties of the polymer melt. 展开更多

In engineering applications (Like an ocean riser), fluid flow around bluff bodies generates substantial resistance, which can jeopardize structural integrity, lifespan, and escalate resource consumption. Therefore, employing drag reduction measures becomes particularly crucial. This paper employs the immersed boundary method to investigate the impact of transversely oriented appendage plate flexibility on the drag of cylinders under different Reynolds numbers and distances. The results indicate that flexible appendage plate exerts drag reduction effects on the downstream cylinder, with this effect gradually diminishing as Reynolds numbers increase. At identical Reynolds numbers, the drag reduction effect initially increases and then decreases with distance, with the optimal drag reduction distance observed at D = 2.5. Compared to cylinders without appendage plate, the maximum drag reduction achieved is 30.551%. Addressing the drag reduction issue in cylinders holds significant importance for ensuring engineering structural integrity, enhancing engineering efficiency, and developing novel underwater towing systems. 展开更多

ABE-KONDOH-NAGANO,ABID,YANG-SHIH and LAUNDER-SHARMA low-Reynolds number turbulence models were applied to simulating unsteady turbulence flow around a square cylinder in different phases flow field and time-averaged unsteady flow field.Meanwhile, drag and lift coefficients of the four different low-Reynolds number turbulence models were analyzed. The simulated results of YANG-SHIH model are close to the large eddy simulation results and experimental results, and they are significantly better than those of ABE-KONDOH-NAGANO,ABID and LAUNDER-SHARMR models. The modification of the generation of turbulence kinetic energy is the key factor to a successful simulation for YANG-SHIH model, while the correction of the turbulence near the wall has minor influence on the simulation results. For ABE-KONDOH-NAGANO,ABID and LAUNDER-SHARMA models satisfactory simulation results cannot be obtained due to lack of the modification of the generation of turbulence kinetic energy. With the joint force of wall function and the turbulence models with the adoption of corrected swirl stream, flow around a square cylinder can be fully simulated with less grids by the near-wall. 展开更多

In order to investigate the scale effect of turbulent flow around a circular cylinder, two similarity numbers (criteria) based on turbulent kinetic and dissipation rates associ- ated with the fluctuation characteristics of turbulence wake are deduced by analyzing the Reynolds averaged NavierStokes equations (RANS). The RNG k-s models and finite volume method are used to solve the governing equations and the second-order implicit time and upwind space discretization algorithms are used to discrete the governing equations. A numerical computation of flow parameters around a two-dimensional circular cylinder with Reynolds numbers ranging from 102 to l07 is accomplished and the result indicates that the fluctuation of turbulence flow along the center line in the wake of circular cylinder can never be changed with increasing Reynolds numbers when Re ≥ 3 × 10^6. This conclusion is useful for controlling the scale of numerical calculations and for applying model test data to engineering practice. 展开更多

The flow past a cylinder in a channel with the aspect ratio of 2 : 1 for the upper convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid and the Oldroyd-B fluid with the viscosity ratio of 0.59 is studied by using the Galerkin/Least-square finite element method and a p-adaptive refinement algorithm. A posteriori error estimation indicates that the stress-gradient error dominates the total error. As the Deborah number, De, approaches 0.8 for the UCM fluid and 0.9 for the Oldroyd-B fluid, strong stress boundary layers near the rear stagnation point are forming, which are characterized by jumps of the stress-profiles on the cylinder wall and plane of symmetry, huge stress gradients and rapid decay of the gradients across narrow thicknesses. The origin of the huge stress-gradients can be traced to the purely elongational flow behind the rear stagnation point, where the position at which the elongation rate is of 1/2De approaches the rear stagnation point as the Deborah number approaches the critical values. These observations imply that the cylinder problem for the UCM and Oldroyd-B fluids may have physical limiting Deborah numbers of 0.8 and 0.9, respectively. 展开更多

The flow past a square-section cylinder with a geometric disturbance is investigated by numerical simulations. The extra terms, due to the introduction of mapping transformation simulating the effect of disturbance into the transformed Navier-Stokes equations, are correctly derived, and the incorrect ones in the previous literature are pointed out and analyzed. Furthermore, the relationship between the vorticity, especially on the cylinder surface, and the disturbance is derived and explained theoretically. The computations are performed at two Reynolds numbers of 100 and 180 and three amplitudes of waviness of 0.006, 0.025 and 0.167 with another aim to explore the effects of different Reynolds numbers and disturbance on the vortex dynamics in the wake and forces on the body. Numerical results have shown that, at the mild waviness of 0.025, the Kairmain vortex shedding is suppressed completely for Re = 100, while the forced vortex dislocation is appeared in the near wake at the Reynolds number of 180. The drag reduction is up to 21.6% at Re = 100 and 25.7% at Re = 180 for the high waviness of 0.167 compared with the non-wavy cylinder. The lift and the Strouhal number varied with different Reynolds numbers and the wave steepness are also obtained. 展开更多

The uncertainty quantification of flows around a cylinder is studied by the non-intrusive polynomial chaos method. Based on the validation with benchmark results, discussions are mainly focused on the statistic properties of the peak lift and drag coefficients and base pressure drop over the cylinder with the uncertainties of viscosity coefficient and inflow boundary velocity. As for the numerical results of flows around a cylinder, influence of the inflow boundary velocity uncertainty is larger than that of viscosity. The results indeed demonstrate that a five-order degree of polynomial chaos expansion is enough to represent the solution of flow in this study. 展开更多

The numerical simulation using the multiple relaxation time lattice Boltzmann method (MRT-LBM) is carried out for the purpose of investigating the two-dimensional flow around three circular cylinders. Among these three circular cylinders, one of the three cylinders on which a forced in-line vibrating is used to do this research and attempt to find out the effects of the moving cylinder and the other two rigid cylinders on the wake characteristics and vortex formation. As a benchmark problem to discuss the problem of lift coefficient r.m.s for these cylinders with spacing ratios T/ D between other rigid side-by-side cylinders, and the calculation is carried out with two compared cases at Reynolds number of 100, two of the cylinders are rigid and the other one is an in-line vibrated cylinder lying downstream, in addition, forced vibrating amplitude and frequency are A/D = 0.5 and fv= 0.4 (where A is the forced amplitude, D is the cylinder diameter, and fv stands for the vibrating frequency, respectively). The calculated results not only indicate that the spacing ratios T/D (T is the center-to-center spacing between the two upstream cylinders) have influence on the wake patterns and the formation of vortex shedding, but also analyze the lift coefficient r.m.s for the three cylinders with the spacing ratios S/D (where S is the center-to-center spacing between the center of upstream two side-by-side cylinders and downstream cylinder). 展开更多

This paper is concerned with the numerical simulation of the transient effect of an inertialess Boger flow past a confined circular cylinder and the comparison of predictions with particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements given by Shiang et al.. Dynamic simulation based on the Oldroyd-B constitutive model was carried out using a Lagrangian-Eulerian algorithm. The evolution of velocity field was obtained for the flow at two Deborah (De) numbers, i.e. De = 1.2 and 3.0. At low De, the flow reached steady state rapidly, and showed a symmetric flow regime. However, at high De, the time required to reach steady flow behind the cylinder increased significantly, and the distribution of the velocity field appears to be asymmetric with respect to the stagnation line. Fairly good agreement between the numerical results and the experimental observations is reported. It can be concluded that both the experimental measurements and the present simulations indicate that the elasticity of the polymeric flow strongly affect the flow regime of viscoelastic flow around a confined cylinder. 展开更多

Flows around rectangular cylinders with a series of width-to-height ratios are calculated by means of the Improved Finite Analytic Method (IFAM) and the formation, development and shedding of vortices from the cylinders are simulated successfully. According to these results of time-dependent processes the physical phenomena in the flows are investigated in detail, and the discontinuity of Strouhal number is explained in the case of the width-to-height ratio equal to 3.0. The numer- ical solutions here show good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, based on several hundreds of the calculated flow patterns a moving picture is made by the computer image processing technology and recorded on a video tape, and then the vivid pictures of the physical process of vortex-shedding can be replayed later and analysed in detail. 展开更多

In this paper, a free-surface synthetic schlieren(FS-SS) method was performed to detect the free surface disturbances. It is a purely optical method that uses refraction of light to reconstruct the height changes of water surface. The theory was developed based on Moisy's research, but has mainly been used in small-scale applications like painting and coating industry. Based on the methods and theories of the literature review, an in-depth investigation was conducted to optimize the FS-SS method and verify its feasibility on a relatively large-scale(e.g., wake region of shallow flow). The experimental setup was simplified which is approachable in most laboratories. Through proper experimental setting and an optimized post-processing routine, the quality of image was highly improved and ensured the accuracy of results. A drop test was performed proving the continuity of FS-SS method in the time domain. Also, a comparison test with flow around a cylinder at two speeds showed the ability of FS-SS method to reconstruct the irregular water surface in relative large-scale flow structures. 展开更多

A Lagrangian-Eulerian hybrid scheme to solve unsteady N-S equation in two-dimensional incompressible fluid at high Reynolds numbers is presented in this paper. A random walk is imposed to simulate the viscous diffusion, the vortex-in-cell method is used to obtain the convection velocity, and nascent vortices are created on a cylinder to satisfy the zero-slip condition. The impulsively started flow around a circular cylinder and the separation induced by a pair of incident vortices symmetrically approaching a circular cylinder have been successfully simulated by the hybrid scheme. The impulsively started flow from rest has been computed at Reynolds numbers 3000 and 9500. Comparisons are made with those results of finite-difference method, vortex method and flow visualization. Agreement is good. The particular attention has been paid to the evolutions of flow pattern. A topological analysis has been proposed in the region of the near wake. The bulge, isolated secondary vortex, a pair of secondary vortices, ' forewake phenomenon and other patterns are simulated numerically. The separation induced by a pair of incident vortices approaching a circular cylinder has been investigated by using the same scheme. The rebounding phenomenon of the incident vortex is observed and is attributed to the effect of the secondary vortex. In particular, we have found that a tertiary vortex can be formed near the surface; this phenomenon has been verified by flow visualization reported recently. 展开更多

The reflection and diffraction of a planar shock wave around a circular cylinder are a typical problem of the complex nonlinear shock wave phenomena in literature. It has long been studied experimentally, analytically as well as numerically.Takayama in 1987 obtained clear experimental pictures ofisopycnics in shock tube under the condi- tion that the impinging shock wave propagates as far as 3 diameters away from the cylinder. To know more complete- ly the whole unsteady process,it is desirable to get experimental results in a region which is more than 10 diameters away from the cylinder. This is what has been done in this paper by using the pulsed laser holographic interferometry for several shock Mach numbers of the impinging shock. Results for several moments are shown, giving more know- ledge about the whole unsteady flow field. This is useful for a reliable and complete understanding of the changing force acting on the cylinder, and provides interesting data to check the performance of many recently developed high resolution numerical methods for unsteady shock wave calculation. 展开更多

The turbulent fluid and particle interaction in the turbulent boundary layer for cross how over a cylinder has been experimentally studied. A phase-Doppler anemometer was used to measure the mean and fluctuating velocities of both phases. Two size ranges of particles (30 mu m similar to 60 mu m and 80 mu m similar to 150 mu m) at certain concentrations were used for considering the effects of particle sizes on the mean velocity profiles and on the turbulent intensity levels. The measurements clearly demonstrated that the larger particles damped fluid turbulence. For the smaller particles, this damping effect was less noticeable. The measurements further showed a delay in the separation point for two phase turbulent cross how over a cylinder. 展开更多
