[ Objective] The aim of the study was to observe the ultrastructure of Cysticercus pisiformis under different state. [ Method] The Cysti- cercus pisiformis were obtained in the procedure of slaughter inspection form meat-packing plant. The Cysticercus pisiformis was taken out by cut- ting cyst directly, or cultured with physiologic saline containing 10% bile until evagination. Then it was observed and recorded by scanning electron microscopy. [ Result] Observed from top of scolex of Cysticercus pisiformis locate in cyst, the rostellum looked like an umbrella. The cutaneous muscular columns with hamula covered the front end of scolex. Viewed from the side, a row of antlers-liking hamula adhered to the scolex. Four suckers were looked like more width and body segments less time, in which there were lots of wrinkles in their surface respectively. The Cysticercus pisiformis cultured was divided obviously into scolex, neck, body segment and zone of cyst. When cutaneous muscular column of rostellum con- tracted, the antler-liking hamula extended to periphery that the ring-liking contraction appeared in neck and the lengthways contraction in body seg- ments. [ Conclusion] The Cysticercus pisiformis under different state has distinctly dissimilar ultrastructure. 展开更多

The six antigens of Cysticercus cellulosae: CFag, CSag, CBWag, CWag, UCWag and TSag were prepared respectively. The amino acids of the antigens were determined quantitative by automatic amino acid analyzer. The relationship of original reaction was confirmed between amino acids and antigens. The results showed that there were 17 amino acids among all of the antigens. There were no significant difference (P >0.05) of Asp, Clu, Lys, His in composition of all antigens by data analysis software SPSS. There are also no significant difference (P >0.05) in the composition of all amino acids between CSag and CBWag. The composition of Thr, Ser, Tyr, Ved, Pro in UCWag shows significant difference (P<0.05) with other antigens. The sensitivity and peculiarity of UCWag are higher than that of the others. Pro and Glu show significant linear correspondence with sensitivity and peculiarity of antigens respectively. 展开更多

Objective: To present the molecular characterization of Cysticercus tenuicollis(C. tenuicollis) of Taenia hydatigena(T. hydatigena) from livestock isolates in Egypt, and to introduce a detailed image of C. tenuicollis infection in ruminant animals in Upper Egypt. Methods: The prevalence rates of C. tenuicollis infections among the slaughtered animals from different organs were determined using the amplification of sequencing of the MT-CO1 gene. Results: In the present study the infection rates of C. tenuicollis were found to be 16%and 19% in sheep and goat samples respectively. Firstly we report one larval stage of T. hydatigena detected in the camel liver in Egypt. C. tenuicollis infection manifested a higher prevalence in females than in males. Those above two years of age manifested a higher infection rate than younger animals. The preferred site for the infection was the omentum: a 70% preference in sheep and a 68% preference in goats. The molecular characterization using the MT-CO1 gene of isolates from sheep, goats and camels corresponded to T. hydatigena. For this study, molecular characterizations of T. hydatigena were done for the first time in Egypt. Molecular tools are of great assistance in characterizing the C. tenuicollis parasite especially when the morphological character cannot be detected, because the metacestodes are frequently confused with infection by the hydatid cyst, especially when these occur in the visceral organs. In the present study,C. tenuicollis manifested high identity in the goat and sheep samples, while differences were found more frequently in the camel samples(10 base pair). Conclusions: Clearly molecular diagnosis for C. tenuicollis infection significantly helps to differentiate it from such other metacestodes as hydatidosis, which manifests a completely different pathogenicity and requires different control programs. 展开更多

Objective:To determine the prevalence of Cysticercus tenuicollis(C.tenuicollis) metacestodes in five oryx species kept in A1 Ain Zoo animal collection. Methods:This study was based on a retrospective analysis of post-mortem records covering a four year period(July 2010 to July 2014).Results:A total of 213 individual animals were recorded dead during the four year period(July 2010 to July 2014).Out of this,12(5.6%) were recorded with C.tenuicollis.More females(8) than males(4) were recorded to have C.tenuicollis, although this was not statistically significant(P= 0.3737).Conclusions:This study shows that,Arabian oryx, beisa oryx,fringe-eared oryx, gemsbok and scimitar-horned oryx are susceptible to C.tenuicollis.Based on the epidemiology and the life cycle of this parasite,it is possible that these captive animals ingested the parasite through contaminated feed which could have happened in the pasture land or stray dogs and wild canidae(e.g.fox) visited the zoo contaminating the oryx feed.Stray dogs and wild canidae should be prevented from visiting pasture land and a captive animal facility. 展开更多

The activity of fumaric reductase in Cysticercus cellulosae tissue homogenate with albendazole and oxfendazole individually was detected. Results showed that the two kinds of drugs both could inhabite the activity of fumaric reductase. The results indicate that the mechanism of action of benzimidazole carbamate drugs is probably inhabiting the complex of fumaric reductase noncompetently, thus lead to the exhaostion of energy and death. 展开更多

The gene encoding the 18 kDa protein of Taenia solium metacestodes was amplified by RT-PCR and cloned into the pGEM-T vector for sequencing. The recombinant plasmid named pGEX-CE18 was constructed and transformed into E.coli BL21 for in vitro expression.SDS-PAGE and Western blot were employed for analyzing the recombinant protein, which was then used for development of an indirect ELISA for detection of anti-cysticercosis antibodies. The results showed that the recombinant protein of interest was 35 kDa in size, accounting for 28%of total bacteria proteins, and reacted with positive sera against cysticercosis.Using the newly-constructed indirect ELISA and a commercially available ELISA kit, paired analyses of 178 serum samples indicated that the concordant rate was 98.83%and the ELISA exhibited good specificity and sensitivity, supporting its utility and application for diagnosis of cysticercosis. 展开更多

The efficacy of oxfendazole(OFZ) on Taenia hydatigena metacestodes, also called Cysticercus tenuicollis(C. tenuicollis), was studied in 648 raising pigs. This study was performed in Tumbes Department in Peru, an endemic area for cysticercosis. Pigs were randomized in two groups; untreated group(n = 142) did not receive any treatment and treated group(n = 506) received OFZ treatment at a single dose of 30 mg/kg body weight.Six months after treatment, the pigs were necropsied. The prevalence of infection by C. tenuicollis among the pigs was 27.5%(39/142) and 2.0%(10/506) in untreated and treated groups, respectively. Untreated group was infested only with viable cysts, whereas treated group had no viable cysts. All the cysts found in treated group presented degeneration, with a thick membrane, and they contained milky fluid and fibrous tissue. A single dose of OFZ was effective against C. tenuicollis, thus providing an alternative drug for controlling this parasite in pigs. 展开更多

In human, tapeworm species can cause a parasitic infection by ingestion of raw or under cooked beef (<em>T. saginata</em>) or pork (<em>T. solium</em> and <em>T. asiatica</em>). Taeniasis usually presents with vague symptoms or mild abdominal pain and discomfort. The intestinal complications are not commonly mentioned in the literatures.<strong> Case presentation:</strong> We present 65-year-old Egyptian woman who lives in Oman, who is known to have type two diabetes mellitus and hypertension. She presented to Emergency department with abdominal pain and constipation for a period of three days. On examination, she was dehydrated with tachycardia (pulse rate: 110/minute) blood pressure of 100/60 mmHg and patient was afebrile. Abdominal examination revealed, mildly distended abdomen and tense, no guarding or rigidity no palpable mass, exaggerated bowel sound and rectum is empty on per rectal examination. Emergency laparotomy was performed with intra-operative findings of large foreign body impacted in the distal jejunum about 8 × 3 cm, cylinder in shape completely obliterating the lumen, distal loops was collapsed. <strong>Conclusion: </strong>Although Taeniasis is a very rare infection, index of suspicion such as a potential in the differential diagnosis as cause of an acute abdomen with unusual surgical complications should be considered. The diagnosis of these rare circumstances is usually made intraoperatively, and surgery is recommended only for the treatment of complications. 展开更多
