This paper analyzes the influence of key weather variables (temperature and rainfall) and seasonal variations in daylength on daytime activity budgets. This study showed that the percentage of daytime spent in feeding by feral goats on Rum Island decreased with average monthly temperature, while the percentage of daytime spent in lying increased and rainfall had no significant effects on the percentage daytime spent in feeding or lying. The daylength varied greatly from January to December with the longest daylength being in June and July, and the shortest one in December and January. The amount of daytime spent feeding decreased from summer to winter, although the percentage of daytime spent feeding increased greatly from summer to winter. The seasonal variations in daylength seem to be an important factor in constraining feral goats' activity, especially in the cold and wet winters when forage biomass and quality are both at their lowest level. We discuss the influence of such constraining effects on the forage intake of these goats and their winter survival rate, as well as its implication for population regulation of these goats.展开更多
To expand crop planting areas,reestablishment of crop latitude adaptation based on genetic variation in photoperiodic genes can be performed,but it is quite time consuming.By contrast,a crop variety that already exhib...To expand crop planting areas,reestablishment of crop latitude adaptation based on genetic variation in photoperiodic genes can be performed,but it is quite time consuming.By contrast,a crop variety that already exhibits multi-latitude adaptation has the potential to increase its planting areas to be more widely and quickly available.However,the importance and potential of multi-latitude adaptation of crop varieties have not been systematically described.Here,combining daylength-sensing data with the cropping system of elite rice and maize varieties,we found that varieties with gradual daylength sensing coupled with optimum cropping modes have an enhanced capacity for multi-latitude adaptation in China.Furthermore,this multi-latitude adaptation expanded their planting areas and indirectly improved China’s nationwide rice and maize unit yield.Thus,coupling the daylength-sensing process with optimum cropping modes to enhance latitude adaptability of excellent varieties represents an exciting approach for deploying crop varieties with the potential to expand their planting areas and quickly improve nationwide crop unit yield in developing countries.展开更多
Utilization of a two-line breeding system via photoperiod-thermo sensitive male sterility has a great potential for hybrid production in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). 337S is a novel wheat male sterile line sensitiv...Utilization of a two-line breeding system via photoperiod-thermo sensitive male sterility has a great potential for hybrid production in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). 337S is a novel wheat male sterile line sensitive to both short daylength/Iow temperature and long daylength/high temperature. Five F2 populations derived from the crosses between 337S and five common wheat varieties were developed for genetic analysis. All Fl's were highly fertile while segregation occurred in the F2 populations with a ratio of 3 fertile:l sterile under short daylength/Iow temperature. It is shown that male sterility in 337S was controlled by a single recessive gene, temporarily designated as wptms3. Bulked segregant analysis (BSA) coupled with simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers was applied to map the sterile gene using one mapping population. The wptms3 gene was mapped to chromosome arm 1BS and flanked byXgwm413 and Xgwm182 at a genetic distance of 3.2 and 23.5 cM, respectively. The accuracy and efficiency of marker-assisted selection were evaluated and proved essential for identifying homozygous recessive male sterile genotypes of the wptms3 gene in F2 generation.展开更多
