On the Study of the Translator's Position in Traditional Translation Theories

In traditional translation theories, the author and the translator, the original text and the translated text are in the binary oppositions. Both author-centeredness and text-centeredness are in authoritative positions. Moreover, there are some incorrect viewpoints about the translator's position in the traditional translation theories. In this case, this paper will analyze the translator's position in the traditional translation theories comprehensively.

Translation Skills of Children’s Literature from the Perspective of Recep tion Theory:A Case Study of Bronze and Sunflower

With the development of society and the prosperity of Chinese literature,as a part of China’s soft power,Chinese chil dren literature is faced with the problem of international dissemination.The English version of Cao Wenxuan’s Bronze and Sunflow er won Hans Christian Andersen Award,the top award of children’s literature,which is a successful example of such dissemina tion.Therefore,the Chinese-English translation skills employed are worth studying.This paper aims to analyze the skills used to in the translation of short clauses,reiterative locution,simile,parallelism and dingzhen from the perspective of reception theory.It is found that by using such translation skills as omission,alliteration,repetition of prepositions and pronouns,and literal translation,the translator preserves and recreates the effect of the original text in ways that are more acceptable and idiomatic for the target reader.

A Comparative Study on English-Chinese Translation of The Borrowers from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

When translating children's literature, the characteristics of the target readers can not be neglected. However, in thetranslation of literary works in China, translation of children's literature in China has always been ignored. E-C translation practicein children's literature and the theoretical study are of imbalance. When it comes to the theoretical study of E-C translation of chil-dren's literature, it is far backward. Skopostheorie holds that the purpose of translation is the primary rule to be followed, and pro-vides children's literature translation with theory evidence. The Borrowers was introduced into China in 1990, highly appreciatedby readers. However, the related research in the translation of this book is poor. This paper takes Skopostheorie as the theoreticalframework and combines the characteristics of children's literature, discussing the different Chinese translation versions of the Brit-ish children's literature The Borrowers. This paper makes a comparative analysis on the advantages and disadvantages of differentChinese versions, and summarizes the methods of translating children's literature.

On the Appliance of Lin Yutang's Translation Theory in his Translation Practice of Six Chapters of a Floating Life

The thesis explores Lin Yutang's translation practice from a microscopic perspective by means of the application of Lin's translation theory. It attempts to analyze Lin's translation characteristics and the reason why he does so from the point of view of Lin's translation theory,basically two rules:fidelity rule and aesthetic beauty rule and evaluate Lin's translation.

Translating Theory in the Perspective of Daoism

Translation of Film Titles with the Application of Peter Newmark＇s Translation Theory

This paper, based on the Chinese audience＇s aesthetic and cultural anticipation and the application of Peter Newmark＇s translation theory on translating film rifles, discusses the features and translation of film title from English to Chinese. The four main translation methods--literal translation, transliteration, free translation, semantic translation and/or communicative translation and the different translation strategies of film titles used in Hong Kong and Taiwan are introduced in detail with sufficient examples.

An Analysis of Problematic C-E Translations of Signs in Light of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory

Based on Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory,this article makes an analysis of the problems in C-E translations ofsigns in China.The author will discuss respectively the problematic C-E translations from two respects:1)not being equivalent tosource-language message,and 2)not being natural for target language.If translators work hard with the help of Nida’s functionalequivalence theory,the defects and imperfections will be discovered,and standard signs in English will be read more and more inpublic places.

Translation of The Catcher in the Rye from the Perspective of Skopos Theory——A Case Study of Sun Zhongxu's Translation Work

This paper analyzes the E-C translation of the book The Catcher in the Rye from the perspective of Skopos theory,taking Sun Zhongxu's translation work as an example,in which,literature method and case study method are adopted.The paper finds that Sun Zhongxu uses many colloquial expressions to convey the meaning of the source language.His translation strategies,his translation of American slangs,and his choices of words all reflect the three rules of Skopos theory.

On Implicit Information Translation of Shakespeare' s Works from the Perspective of Relevance Theory:In the Case of Zhu' s Translation and Liang' s Translation

The Relevance Theory put forward by Sperber and Wilson not only gives rise to a new research on pragmatics, but also provides a new theoretic foundation for other disciplines. Gutt applies the theory to translation and gives a relevance-theoretic account of translation. The relevance-theoretic communicative model provides rational explanation for existence of the implicit information. The appropri ate treatment of the implicit information is consistent with readers' cognitive environment and expectation. Human communication de pends on not only the text, but also the inferential context. The adequate contextual effect is derived from the correct judgment and infer ence of the implicit information in communication. Therefore, the translator should match the original author' s intention with target text readers' expectation to make sure that they yield adequate contextual effects with appropriate processing efforts. Implicitness is one of the features of Shakespeare' s works. It is more demanding for the translators to catch and transfer to the target readers the implicit information. Zhu Shenghao and Liang Shiqiu, the two famous translators adopt different translation strategies to deal with the implicit information in the works.

Translation of Children's Literature from the Perspective of Function Equivalence——A Case Study of Chinese Version of Charlotte's Web

Children's literature being a unique type of literary at a peripheral position,it is difficult for translators to reappear itsessence in the target text,due to the diverse cultures and language conventions.Since Functional Equivalence Theory emphasizesthe functional equivalence between ST and TL which provides a new idea and method for literary translation,the thesis makes ananalysis of the Chinese version of Charlotte's Web.This comes from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory so as to dis-cusses whether Functional Equivalence Theory is effective in the translation of children's literature,and how has it been em-ployed.The thesis hopes that children's literature will be paid more attention,and the prosperity of children's literature transla-tion will be promoted.

A Study of Idiom Translation in Bonsall’s The Red Chamber Dream

This paper combines quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the translation characteristics of idioms in B.S.Bonsall’s full English translation of The Red Chamber Dream,starting from George Steiner’s fourfold hermeneutic motion:trust,aggression,incorporation,and restitution.Through data statistics and conclusion analysis,I concluded that the translation strategies of idioms in Bonsall’s English translation are mainly literal translations,supplemented by free translations,and literal translations combined with free translations,which also provides some enlightenment for the English translation of Chinese classics.

A Study on Lin Yutang's Translation Strategies of Domestication

Accredited as"Master of Humor",Lin Yutang is a world-famous translator,scholar and writer who was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature repectively in 1972 and 1973.His role of successfully introducing Chinese culture to the West are compared to that of Jesuilt missionary Matteo Ricci,quoted The United Daily News of Taiwan,as saying(林太乙,1998).As a unique and an outstanding translator in Chinese history,Lin devotes his entire life to translating and writing in English,and has a profound impact on introducing Chinese Culture to the English-speaking world during the recent 100 years.He also put forward a systematic and sound set of translating theories which he himself abide by strictly in his own works.This small mini essay will touch upon Lin Yutang’s translation,his ideas about translation,his influences,the connections between his writing and translation.Among his various achievements,this essay attempts to probe into Lin Yutang‘s translation theories,especially that of"Domestication".

Study on the Application of Gestalt Theory in CLT

CLT is an activity of aesthetic representation,in which the translators undertake analysis,synthesis,and reconstruction of the aesthetic qualities inherent in the original work until the representation of these aesthetic qualities is achieved.Gestalt theory could help the translator to represent aesthetic qualities of the source text in the target text in CLT.

Translator＇s Voice in Translated Texts

Ever since Venuti put forward the concept of translator＇s invisibility in 1995, studies have been conducted on the discursive presence of translators in the translated texts. The translator, as the receiver of the source text and m the meantime the producer of the target text, is sure to leave his/her voice traceable in the translated texts throughout the whole translating process. This paper aims to present an overview of the conceptual development of the translator＇s voice in translation studies from different perspectives like narratology, stylistics, socio-narrative theory, speech-act theory etc.

The Study of Wu Ningkun＇s Chinese versions of The Great Gatsby from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

Skopos theory has provoked a lot of research interest among scholars since it was introduced in the 1970s, Skopos theory has formed a new perspective of translation practice and research by breaking the traditional idea of translation equivalence so to some extent it is an important supplement to translation theories. In Skopos theory, translation is considered to be a purposeful communicative action, and the specific translation purpose determines the whole translational action. Functionally adequate means that the translation should be adequate to the requirements of the translation and it works as the criterion of translation. Skopos theory enables translators to select appropriate translation strategies according to their own purposes, so as to effectively solve the dilemma in the translation process whether faithfully display the form of source text or flexibly retain the sense of the source text. The Great Gatsby is the masterpiece of the American writer Fitzgerald, F. S.. He not only depicted the intoxicating atmosphere of the unprecedented prosperity in American history after the First World War with vivid images and cheerful rhythms but also described the sorrows about the disillusionment of the ＂American Dream＂ after the war. This paper takes the Skopos of German functionalism as a point to analyze The Great Gatsby translated by Wu Ningkun from the perspective of skopos theory. Through the analysis of the specific translation of the selected paragraphs, I conclude Wu＇s translation strategies from lexical aspect, syntactic aspect and discourse aspect. In Wu＇s version he kept the styles, rhythms, and American thoughts of the source text by foreignization. His skopos is to offer an opportunity to broaden the horizon of readers who are hunger for new ideas and knowledge at that time therefor it is rather necessary to absorb the ＂exotic elements＂ in the his translations.

From Equivalence to Skopos: A Theoretical "Dialogue" between Nida and the Functional School

Dynamic Equivalence and Skopos Theory are two important translation theories in the fields of translation, which many scholars spare no efforts to research on. This short essay intends to compare and complement between Nida's Dynamic Equivalence and Skopos theory after briefly reviewing these two translation theories. It is aimed for helping readers improve their translation skills via stimulating them to consider translation issues from different angles, such as the nature of translation, the target of translation, translation market, cultural constrains, translation process, translation effects, and etc. And this essay focuses on Nida's Dynamic Equivalence and Skopos theory, a part of functional theories via comparing and harmonizing these two translation theories.

Lady Windermere’s Fan汉译本比较——基于女性主义翻译理论

奥斯卡·王尔德虽然是男性作者,但其以女性为主要人物的作品Lady Windermere’s Fan挑战了维多利亚时期所谓的"好女人"与"坏女人"的标准,彰显了女性主义思想。文章运用女性主义翻译理论,通过比照沈性仁和余光中关于Lady Windermere’s Fan的两个中译本得出,相较于余译本,沈译本通过在翻译过程保留原文女性主义思想甚至积极改写,通过凸显女性特征,赋予了女性更高的社会地位。

概念整合理论视域下《道德经》哲理类翻译

《道德经》中的哲学思想体现在“道”“德”“无为”“自然”等概念之中,这些概念网络构成了老子的哲学体系。在对外传播的历史进程中,《道德经》的哲理类解读已成为多元化解读语境中的重要类别,但由于中西方话语权不平等和思维差异等原因,未来《道德经》的哲理类释译仍需摆脱宗教哲学类解读的窠臼,一些误解、曲解和漏译原典内涵的现象也有待消除。概念整合理论体系中的参照点和默认值等理论主张,为纾解《道德经》哲学内涵的挖掘及其对外传播中创造性误读之间的冲突,提供了一种新的理论视野和方法路径。研究认为,运用概念整合理论指引《道德经》哲理类翻译,译者需找到能够激活与原文相似的认知框架下的语言表达,才能实现译文文本与原文文本在认知框架内范畴域的一致性。
