The climate has an impact on the urban thermal environment, and the magnitude of the surface urban heat island(SUHI)and urban cool island(UCI)vary across the world’s climatic zones. This literature review investigated:1)the variations in the SUHI and UCI intensity under different climatic backgrounds, and 2)the effect of vegetation types, landscape composition, urban configuration, and water bodies on the SUHI.The SUHI had a higher intensity in tropical(Af(tropical rainy climate,Köppen climate classification),Am(tropical monsoon climate),subtropical(Cfa,subtropical humid climate),and humid continental(Dwa,semi-humid and semi-arid monsoon climate)climate zones. The magnitude of the UCI was low compared to the SUHI across the climate zones. The cool and dry Mediterranean(Cfb,temperate marine climate;Csb,temperate mediterranean climate;Cfa)and tropical climate(Af)areas had a higher cooling intensity. For cities with a desert climate(BWh,tropical desert climate),a reverse pattern was found. The difference in the SUHI in the night-time was greater than in the daytime for most cities across the climate zones. The extent of green space cooling was related to city size, the adjacent impervious surface, and the local climate.Additionally, the composition of urban landscape elements was more significant than their configuration for sustaining the urban thermal environment. Finally,we identified future research gaps for possible solutions in the context of sustainable urbanization in different climate zones. 展开更多

Extreme environmental conditions are key factors in the formation of the structure and diversity of microbial communities. In meromictic ecosystems, extreme conditions and a stable stratification of physical, chemical and biological parameters lead to diversity and heterogeneity of microenvironments. Lake Doroninskoe is located in an extreme geographical area and diff ers from other known meromictic reservoirs of the world by a low level of illumination in the chemocline and a rare type of alkaline water in sedimentary rocks formed by evaporative concentration. To understand the key factors that shape the composition and structure of the microbial community, the macro-and micro-variations in space and time are of great importance. We investigated the short-term dynamics of the structure and diversity of microbial communities of the meromictic soda lake, Lake Doroninskoe, at day and night using highthroughput sequencing and bioinformatics. Metagenomic analysis of 16 S rRNA gene amplicons showed that the microbial communities had a high taxonomic diversity both at day and night. Sixteen bacterial and three archaeal phyla were identified. Proteobacteria were dominant and comprised 75% during the day, increasing to 90% at night. Metabolically stable denitrifying bacteria that were able to use a variety of alternative electron acceptors and electron donors were prevalent in Lake Doroninskoe. They belonged to the families Enterobacteriaceae(class Gammaproteobacteria) and Alcaligenaceae(class Betaproteobacteria). Statistically significant differences between day and night microbial communities were found. During the day, the microbial community was the most diverse. We discuss the peculiarities of the underexplored shortterm dynamics of the structure and diversity of the microbial communities of the meromictic soda Lake Doroninskoe, and propose topics for prospective studies. 展开更多

Its regeneration from callus culture is very difficult. In this study, an efficient method for plant regeneration was developed from its calli. The calli derived from young stem explants of S. mussotii were cultured at two types of temperature treatments to test their efficiency of shoot regeneration. When the calli were cultured at variable temperature (VT, 20℃ during the day and 10℃ at night) treatment, the adventitious shoots were formed at each combination tested. However, that did not occur when the calli were cultured at constant temperature (CT, 25℃) treatment. The best response (53.7%) of plantlet regeneration was obtained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 3 mg·l-1 6-benzylaminopurine with 0.5 mg·l-1 α-naphthaleneacetic acid in the VT treatment. The regenerated plantlets were rooted on half-strength MS medium without growth regulators. They flowered in the following subculture. The results indicate that the treatment of day-night temperature difference is a critical factor to callus differentiation in S. mussotii. This protocol can be used for conservation as well as mass propagation of this medicinal plant. 展开更多

In anurans, calling behaviour is strongly seasonal and circadian. Previous studies have revealed that a uditory sensitivity in frogs exhibits seasonal plasticity, and electroencephalographic signals exhibit highly correlated circadian patterns;of which, the circadian rhythm remains unknown. In this study, the circadian rhythm and intersexual differences of auditory sensitivity were tested in the Emei music frog(Nidirana daunchina). This was achieved by comparing thresholds and latencies of auditory brainstem responses(ABRs) evoked by tones and clicks stimuli between male and female frogs during the day and at night, respectively. Our results revealed that both auditory thresholds and latencies had no differences between day and night except the la tencies in 3.5–4.0 kHz frequencies. However, the thresholds of tone pip evoked ABRs differed significantly between male and female frogs from 2.5 to 5.0 kHz. This demonstrated that the auditory sensitivity of Emei music frogs exhibits sexual dimorphism at high frequencies, with female frogs exhibiting greater auditory sensitivity than that of male frogs. Simultaneously, the power spectra of male advertisement calls are matched well with the frequency range of auditory sensitivity in male and female frogs, which supports the matched filter hypothesis. Our study enhances the understanding of circadian plasticity and sexual dimorphism of auditory sensitivity in frogs. 展开更多
