The microwave dielectric property of these ceramics at a frequency of 9.36 GHz was studied. The crystalline phases of the samples were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The influence of porosity on the dielectric properties was evaluated. The results show thatα-Si3N4 crystalline phase exists in all the samples while the main crystalline phase of the samples isβ-Si3N4, indicating that theα/βtransformation happens during the preparation of samples and the transformation is incomplete. There is a dense matrix containing large pores and cavities with needle-shaped and flakyβ-Si3N4 grains distributing. The dielectric constant of the ceramics reduces with the increase of porosity.展开更多

The experimental results show that the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of the samples reduce evidently with increasing porosity in the sample. When the porosity is constant, the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of the ceramics decrease visibly as the pore size increases. Among all the obtained samples, the minimum dielectric constant is about 2.4.展开更多

The effects of diatomite on flexural strength, fracture toughness, shrinkage, porosity and phase transformation of the porous ceramics were investigated in detail. Compared with that of the ceramic without adding diatomite, the porosity of the ceramic with 10% diatomite is increased by about 27.4%, the flexural strength and fracture toughness reaches 78.04 MPa and 1.25 MPa.m1/2, respectively. As the porosity increases, the dielectric constant of porous SiO2-Si3N4 ceramic decreases obviously from 3.65 to 2.95.展开更多

Microstructure and phase of the sintered samples was investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The electrical conductivity, dielectric constant and dielectric loss increases exponentially with temperature greater than 600 K. The dielectric constant and loss have been measured in the frequency range 100 Hz to 1 MHz. The a.c. conduction studies in the audio frequency range 500 Hz to 1 MHz indicates that the conduction may be due to the electronic hopping mechanism. Silicon Nitride ceramics became dense after sintering. The effect of grain size and role of phase on electrical and dielectric properties have been discussed. These types of samples can be used as a high temperature semi conducting materials for device packaging.展开更多
