This paper studies the model of the digital preservation of paper-cut after analyzing the state-of-the-art of the preservation of intangible cultural heritage at home and abroad, focusing on paper-cutting in Hebei, Ch...This paper studies the model of the digital preservation of paper-cut after analyzing the state-of-the-art of the preservation of intangible cultural heritage at home and abroad, focusing on paper-cutting in Hebei, China in a comprehensive approach of sociology, anthropology, folk art, folklore, communication, computer, and information science. Models, methods, and solutions for the preservation and retention of national and folk cultural heritage are proposed. A virtual multimedia interactive system framework of the digital preservation of national and folk cultural heritage is constructed. The standards of paper-cut digitization are studied. The main content of the paper involves： regulated data collection and recording of the scattered Chinese folk paper-cut works in Hebei; digitization, optimization, compression, classification, icon and pattern extraction, vectorization, and work analysis of the first-hand material. This paper also investigates the demonstration, dissemination, database construction, and retrieval of the classified material, icons, and patterns; the demonstration of the reconstruction and application of icon and pattern database; the design and development of an immersive virtual gaming platform of the multi-media scenes and production process of folk paper-cut.展开更多

The 3D digitalization and documentation of ancient Chinese architecture is challenging because of architectural complexity and structural delicacy.To generate complete and detailed models of this architecture,it is be...The 3D digitalization and documentation of ancient Chinese architecture is challenging because of architectural complexity and structural delicacy.To generate complete and detailed models of this architecture,it is better to acquire,process,and fuse multi-source data instead of single-source data.In this paper,we describe our work on 3D digital preservation of ancient Chinese architecture based on multi source data.We first briefly introduce two surveyed ancient Chinese temples,Foguang Temple and Nanchan Temple.Then,we report the data acquisition equipment we used and the multi-source data we acquired.Finally,we provide an overview of several applications we conducted based on the acquired data,including ground and aerial image fusion,image and LiDAR(light detection and ranging)data fusion,and architectural scene surface reconstruction and semantic modeling.We believe that it is necessary to involve multi-source data for the 3D digital preservation of ancient Chinese architecture,and that the work in this paper will serve as a heuristic guideline for the related research communities.展开更多

Newspapers can preserve vast amount of first-hand historical information for research.They are reliable and valuable primary sources for studies on politics,economy,society,humanities,science and technology,culture,fo...Newspapers can preserve vast amount of first-hand historical information for research.They are reliable and valuable primary sources for studies on politics,economy,society,humanities,science and technology,culture,folkways and customs of a country for a specific period of history.Accordingly,these authors in this paper support that a Chinese Newspaper Digital Repository(CNDR)initiative led by National Library of China(NLC)be firmly established and put into operation in quick order.These authors' conviction and assertion are made only after they have given a careful study and analysis of the problems of current newspaper preservation methods,including print newspapers preservation,preserving newspapers by microfilming technology,and digital publication of newspapers.These authors also have taken into consideration of the legal issues involved about such an undertaking.Based on the review of the efforts and achievements on long-term preservation of newspapers home and abroad,these authors have critiqued the technical scheme of the NLC' Chinese Newspaper Digital Repository,including such important factors as system design,metadata schema,system structure,and the achievements of this project in Phase I.Finally,these authors have recommended that a collaborative operation mechanism and also a new comprehensive service paradigm in the realm of information delivery be established in CNDR's overall strategic planning.展开更多
