Sport Participation and Community Capacity Building in Disadvantaged Urban Communities

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between sport and community by examining the role played by sports participation in community engagement and community capacity building in disadvantaged urban communities.From a conceptual standpoint,the study is based on the sociological theory of the community and Community Capacity Building(CCB)theory,which provide overviews of the concept of community and community capacity and its characteristics.Four disadvantaged urban communities were investigated.Two of these communities had sports programs,while the other two did not.The online questionnaire methodology was adopted to assess the socio-demographic characteristics and community engagement of the participants(knowledge of programs and participation in community activities),and subsequently,an analysis of the online social media narratives of the community members themselves was developed to measure the characteristics of their community capacity building.We found that community engagement and community capacity values were higher in the communities with sports programs.These findings are promising and suggest that approaches based on sports participation development could be fruitful,particularly in disadvantaged communities.

Architecture as a Means of Developing Social Exchange:Learning from a Danish Case Study of Refurbishment and Urban Transformation in a Disadvantaged Housing Area

Disadvantaged housing areas from the postwar period typically consist of relatively monotonous and monofunctional multi-storey blocks and have a separate traffic system rendering the areas isolated enclaves in the urban fabric.It is argued that this spatial isolation contributes to social isolation,and current refurbishments are therefore aimed at linking the housing areas with the surrounding neighbourhoods to enable social exchange between the residents and people from the surrounding areas.Based on a case study in a Danish social housing area,this paper discusses to what extent architectural development and urban strategic transformations can contribute to enabling social exchange in disadvantaged housing areas.Do neighbours enter the disadvantaged housing area as intended?If so,how does this influence their perception of the housing area?The analysis shows that architectural development and urban transformations are interdependent in establishing a social mix in disadvantaged housing areas.It is argued that refurbishments can reduce the stigma surrounding the housing area and its residents.However,the applicability of such strategies is highly dependent on the local context of the housing area.

Neighborhood Disadvantage and Self-Esteem—Do Socioeconomic and Relational Resources Matter?

Extensive research suggests that living in a socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhood is associated with poor mental health.Few studies,however,have examined(1)whether neighborhood disadvantage is associated with residents’self-esteem;and(2)the extent to which individual-level socioeconomic resources such as income and education,and relational resources such as marriage and social support moderate the association between neighborhood disadvantage and self-esteem.This study employs data from the Americans’Changing Lives panel survey(hereafter ACL),a 15-year panel study of the U.S.adult population ages 25 and older in original sample.Because hierarchical linear model was employed to analyze data,findings provide fixed effect coefficients for independent variables at both the individual and census tract levels while controlling for random intercepts between census tracts.Findings based on data from the 4th wave of ACL reveal that neighborhood disadvantage is not associated with self-esteem.We do,however,find that living in a disadvantaged neighborhood worsens selfesteem for those who have lower levels of informal social support and are currently unmarried.These findings imply that while neighborhood disadvantage does not necessarily impact self-esteem,neighborhood disadvantage is detrimental to the self-esteem of those who report lower level of relational resources.

Urban livability in socially disadvantaged neighborhoods: The experience of the German program “socially integrative city”

This paper asks how the livability of socially disadvantaged urban neighborhoods can be improved with the help of publicly funded area-based urban regeneration.It builds on the history of area-based regeneration policies in Germany aiming at upgrading and resolving urban problems at the neighborhood level.Its main argument is as follows.First,the fate of conventional physical upgrading policies focusing on the livability of deprived urban areas depends on the development environment.While successful upgrading sometimes makes inner-city neighborhoods so attractive that they run into a trend towards gentrification and displacement of the urban poor,the stabilization of less privileged areas cannot always be guaranteed.Second,alternative approaches are needed,linking limited physical upgrading with socially oriented policies,building on strategies like neighborhood management and empowerment.Third,they can make a substantial contribution to stabilizing deprived neighborhoods,thereby improving the general living conditions and the opportunities of the urban poor.However,they require at least some permanent intervention.Thus,they transcend the logic of area-based regeneration normally limited to restoring faith into the private real estate market and thereby directing inward investment into them that improves the quality of the physical environment.Fourth,they are hardly able to overcome significant negative stigmatization in cities that are severely hit by economic downturn and population decline.This is especially true when they act as arrival areas for consecutive waves of migrants,making it necessary to redefine the role of those areas in cities and accepting their high concentration of urban problems as a starting point for different area-based policies dealing with them.The key empirical background of the paper is the German system of urban development grants and an evaluation of the so-called program of“socially integrative city”.

Cohabitation among Chinese minorities in Western countries: an alternative family formation strategy for disadvantaged groups?

Using data of Chinese immigrants extracted from the Belgian National Register registering a cohabitation or marriage between 2005 and 2015(N=3945),this study aims to advance the understanding of cohabitation among disadvantaged groups in local marriage markets.From the difference in prevalence of cohabitation between Chinese men and women,we conclude that Chinese immigrants could use cohabita-tion rather as a practical living arrangement in the context of recent migration rather than as an alternative to marriage,as the receiving society does.The practical living strategy of ethnic minorities enhances our understanding of cohabitation among dis-advantaged groups,for whom the choice for cohabiting would be largely influenced by the home familial culture.
