Objective To prepare and evaluate novel chlorine dioxide-based disinfectant powder in single-pack that is more convenient for use and transportation. Methods Orthogonal experiment was performed to determine the recipe of the disinfectant powder. Stability test, suspension quantitative bactericidal test, simulation field triM, and animal toxicity test were carded out to observe its bactericidal and toxicological effects. Results The orthogonal experiment showed that the type of water solution had no effect on the disinfectant powder and the best ratio of sodium chlorite to solid acid was 1:3. Ten grams of the disinfectant powder was fully dissolved in 20 mL water for 2 min, and diluted to 500 mL in water. After 5-10 min, the concentration of chlorine dioxide (CIO2) solution was 266 mg/L to 276 mg/L. After stored at 54℃ for 14 d, the average concentration of CIO2 was decreased by 5.03%. Suspension quantitative bactericidal test showed that the average killing logarithm (KL) value for both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in 100 mg/L CIO2 solution for 2 min was over 5.00. In simulation field triM, the average descending KL value for Escherichia coli in the solution containing 100 mg/L CIO2 for 5 min was over 3.00. The mouse acute LD50 in the solution 5 times exceeded 5000 mg/kg. The disinfectant powder was not toxic and irritative to rabbit skin and had no mutagenic effect on mouse marrow polychromatic erythrocytes (PCE). Conclusion The stability and bactericidal efficacy of solid chlorine dioxide-based disinfectant powder in single-pack are good. The solution containing 100 mg/L CIO2 can kill vegetative forms of bacteria. The concentration of CIO2 on the disinfecting surface of objects is 100 mg/L. The disinfectant powder is not toxic and irritative. 展开更多

Worldwide epidemiological reports assert that drinking water is a source for infections and Legionella control represents a critical issue in healthcare settings. Chemical disinfections of water networks are control measures that need to be fine-tuned to obtain satisfactory results in large buildings over prolonged time periods. Aim of study is the evaluation of the effect of anolyte and chlorine dioxide, applied in two different hot water networks of a nursing home to manage Legionella risk. Nursing home has two buildings (A and B), with the same point of aqueduct water entrance. From June 2016, following a shock chlorination, the continuous disinfections with chlorine dioxide and anolyte were applied in hot networks of building A and B, respectively. Hot water was sampled at the central heating system and at two points of use for Legionella research, while chemical tests of manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and trihalomethanes compounds (THM) were implemented to evaluate the disinfection by-products presence. Before chlorination Legionella pneumophila sg1 was recovered with a mean count of 2.4 × 104 CFU/L, while chemical compounds concentrations were within the law limits (Directive 98/83/EC). Then the disinfections Legionella was not recovered in both hot water plants. After the disinfection with chlorine dioxide (from June 2016 to May 2018), a statistically significant increase of iron, zinc and THM concentrations was detected in building A (p = 0.012;p = 0.004;p = 0.008). Both disinfectants appear effective against Legionella spp. growth in water network, but anolyte ensures a lower disinfection by-products release. 展开更多

Cyclops of zooplankton propagated excessively in eutrophic water body and could not be effectively inactivated by the conventional disinfections process like chlorination due to its stronger resistance to oxidation. In this paper, a full-scale study of chlorine dioxide preoxidation cooperating with routine clarification process for Cyclops removal was conducted in a waterworks. The experimental results were compared with that of the existing prechlorination process in several aspects: including the Cyclops removal efficiencies of water samples taken from the outlets of sedimentation tank and sand filter and the security of drinking water and so on. The results showed that chlorine dioxide might be more effective to inactivate Cyclops than chlorine and Cyclops could be thoroughly removed from water by pre-dosing chlorine dioxide process. Mesocyclops leukarti of zooplankton propagates excessively in eutrophic water body and it cannot be effectively inactivated by the conventional drinking water treatment process. In order to tackle this problem, a study of removal effect on Mesocylops leukarti with chlorine dioxide in a waterworks was performed. The results showed that Mesocyclops leukarti could be effectively removed from water by 1.0 mg/L chlorine dioxide prcoxidation combined with the conventional drinking water treatment process. Higher oxidizability and molecular state of chlorine dioxide in water is the key to the inactivation of Mesocyclops leukarti. The chlorite, disinfection by-products (DBPs) of chlorine dioxide, was stable at 0.45 mg/L, which is lower than that critical value of the USEPA. GC-MS examination showed that the quantity of organic substance in the water treated by chlorine dioxide obviously decreased. Ames test further revealed that the mutagenicity was reduced by chlorine dioxide with respect to prechlorine. The propagation ofMesocyclops leukorti can be inactivated effectively and safely by chlorine dioxide pre-oxidation. 展开更多

Chironomid larvae propagate prolifically in eutrophic water body and they cannot be exterminated by conventional disinfection process. The inactivation effects of chlorine and chlorine dioxide on Chironomid larvae were investigated and some bourdary values in practice were determined under .conditions of various oxidaat dosage, organic precursor concentmtion and pH value. In addition, removal effect of different pre-oxidation cambined with coagulation process on Chironomid larvae in raw water was evaluated. It was found that chlorine dioxide possessed better inactivation effect than chlorine. Complete inactivation of Chironomid larvae in raw water was resulted by 1.5 mg/L of chlorine dioxide with 30 min of contact 'time. Additionally, the organic precursor concentration, pH value had little influence on the inactivation effect. The coagulation jar test showed that Chironomid larvae in the raw water could be completely removed by chlorine dioxide pre-oxidation in combination with the coagulation process at chlorine dioxide dosage of 0.8 mg/L. 展开更多

Chlorine dioxide composite disinfectant generator that produces a mixture of the oxidant gases comprising chlorine dioxide, chlorine, ozone and hydrogen peroxide through electrolyzing salt,is widely utilized in China presently. The experiments in the paper focused on the removal of benzene homologous compounds such as styrene, methyl and dimethyl benzene. The results indicated that pH value was the most crucial factor to influence the treatment effects while reaction time and input way were considered as the importance. The removal rate for benzene could reach 60% when above 80% for methyl, and 100% for styrene and dimethyl. The variation mechanisms between chlorine dioxide, chlorite and chloride which determine the drinking water quality also discussed. 展开更多

Haloacetic acids(HAAs) are formed during the chlorination of drinking water, which are harmful to people′s health due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. In the present study,a detection method combining methyl tert -butyl ether(MtBE) extraction with acid catalysis and gas chromatography coupled with an electron capture detector(GC/ECD) was developed for determining HAAs. The detection limit of this method(MDL) and relative standard deviation(RSD) were below 0.37 μg/L and 6.2%,respectively. The laboratory chlorination experiments were conducted with the purpose of investigating the influences of reaction time,temperature,UV_ 254 ,bromide and ammonia-nitrogen on the formation of HAAs. The results show that the formation amount of HAAs increases with increasing reaction time and temperature, respectively;and there exists a linear relationship between the formation of HAAs and UV_ 254 . The formation amount of HAAs decreases first and then increases as the bromide ion concentration increases, and adding NH +_4 is a possible way to control the formation of HAAs. 展开更多

The stability of iron ion was estimated by pC-pH figure. It was found that iron ion was unstable, with a high Fe (OH)3 precipitation tendency and obvious increase in turbidity. The outer layer of the corrosion scale was compact, while the inner core was porous. The main composition of the scale was iron, and the possible compound constitutes of the outer scale were α-FeOH, γ-FeOOH, α-Fe2O3, γ-F2O3, FeCl3, while the inner were Fe3O4, FeCl2, FeCO3. According to the characteristics of the corrosion scale, it was thought that the main reason for iron instability was iron release from corrosion scale. Many factors such as pipe materials, dissolved oxygen and chlorine residual affect iron release. Generally, higher iron release occurred with lower dissolved oxygen or chlorine residual concentration, while lower iron release occurred with higher dissolved oxygen or chlorine residual concentration. The reason was considered that the passivated out layer of scale of ferric oxide was broken down by reductive reaction in a condition of low oxidants concentration, which would result more rapid corrosion of the nine and red water phenomenon. 展开更多

Objective To define the influence of some parameters, including assimilable organic carbon (AOC), chloramine residual, etc. on the bacterial growth in drinking water distribution systems. Methods Three typical water treatment plants in a northern city (City T) of China and their corresponding distribution systems were investigated. Some parameters of the water samples, such as heterotrophic plate content (HPC), AOC, CODMn, TOC, and phosphate were measured. Results The AOC in most water samples were more than 100 μg/L, or even more than 200 μg/L in some cases. The HPC in distribution systems increased significantly with the decrease of residual chlorine. When the residual chlorine was less than 0.1 mg/L, the magnitude order of HPC was 104 CFU/mL; when it was 0.5-0.7 mg/L, the HPC was about 500 CFU/mL. Conclusion For controlling the biostability of drinking water, the controlling of AOC and residual chlorine should be considered simultaneously. The influence of phosphors on the AOC tests of water is not significant. Phosphors may not be the limiting nutrient in the water distribution systems. 展开更多

This study aimed to explore the disinfection of drinking water in trunk water mains, based on published conditions denoted within the Irish Republic. The variables within the study were consumer draw-off rates, trunk main length, pipe diameter, and water temperature. All these factors are known to impact the free chlorine residual in operational supply networks. Based on published conditions obtained within the literature review, 60 hypothetical trunk mains were generated for this study. Of primary concern were the variables that affect the chlorine decay rate;total amount of chlorine decay;available amount of chlorine in the periphery of the trunk main;and the costs associated with effective chlorine disinfection of trunk mains. Based on the analysis performed, the following were the salient observations: 1) Low consumer draw-off rates and increased trunk main length and diameter increased the risk of the free chlorine residual in the periphery of the trunk mains not complying with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) minimum recommended residual value of 0.1 mg/l (EPA Drinking Water Audit Report, 2014). 2) Increasing the diameter of the trunk main from 125 mm to 180 mm had a negligible effect on the chlorine decay rate. However, increasing the trunk main diameter from 125 mm to 180 mm was shown to have a major impact on the total amount of chlorine decay and free chlorine residual available in the periphery of the main. The key parameters that affected disinfection costs associated with trunk mains include length, diameter and the need for chlorine boosting. 展开更多

Objective To investigate the reduction of chlorination by-products (CBPs) precursors using the fluidized-bed biofdm reactor (FBBR). Methods Reduction of total organic carbon (TOC), ultraviolet absorbance (UV254), tfihalomethane (THM) formation potential (THMFP), haloacetic acid (HAA) formation potential (HAAFP), and ammonia in FBBR were evaluated in detail. Results The reduction of TOC or UV254 was low, on average 12.6% and 4.7%, respectively, while the reduction of THMFP and HAAFP was significant. The reduction of ammonia was 30%-40% even below 3℃, however, it could quickly rise to over 50% above 3℃. Conclusions The FBBR effectively reduces CBPs and ammonia in drinking water even at low temperature and seems to be a very promising and competitive drinking water reactor for polluted surface source waters, especially in China. 展开更多

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is bacteria considered to be present in half of the population and it is a public health problem worldwide. Most patients infected with H. pylori show no clinical symptoms;nonetheless, approximately 10% to 20% of these patients will develop peptic ulcers and 1% will develop gastric cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified H. pylori as a Group 1 carcinogen, recognized as the only bacteria capable of producing cancer. Samples of drinking water (n = 44) from aqueducts with chlorination treatment in selected areas with high prevalence of gastric cancer were analyzed in Costa Rica. Samples of drinking water from Panamá (n = 44) from aqueducts supplying untreated water for human consumption in the province of Chiriquí were also analyzed. The molecular marker of H. pylori, glmM, was used, and to optimize the Real Time PCR (qPCR) technique, annealing temperature, concentration of primers and probe were standardized;also, by analyzing different standard curves, the best reaction conditions that allowed detecting and quantifying the gene were determined. The LightCycler&reg 480 II (LC480II) equipment from Roche Diagnostics GmbH was used, as well as the Absolute Quantification Analysis by means of the Second Derivative Maximum Method. In the case of the samples from Costa Rica, it was determined that 79.5% were positive for H. pylori;removing outlier high average, quantification of bacteria was determined in 3.6 × 103 copies/100 mL. For Panamá it was determined that 86% of the samples were found positive for the presence of H. pylori;removing outlier high average quantification of bacteria was determined at 3.3 × 102 copies/100 mL. The difference in values between the aqueducts in both countries revealed an environmental distribution of the bacteria of epidemiological interest in each case. 展开更多

Previous studies showed contradictory findings regarding the relationship between nitrate in drinking well-water and abnormal methemoglobin (MetHb) level (>2%) among children. We studied the effect of water chlorination in this relationship in children aged up to 7. 240 subclinical children participated in this cross-sectional study. Water nitrate was analyzed for each participant, and so was blood MetHb. Analysis of two water nitrate exposure levels (50 mg/L as )-other extraneous factors (Breslow-Day-Test for interaction), bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Abnormal MetHb levels (up to 7.9%) were associated (p-value = 0.020) with exposure to drinking water nitrate. Only water chlorination was an effect modifier. Among those who do not disinfect water, the prevalence of ab- normal MetHb for those with nitrate level >50 mg/L was 4.95 (p-value = 0.001, 95% CI = [1.92 - 12.79]) times the prevalence for those with nitrate level <50 mg/L. Whereas, among those who do disinfect water, the prevalence for those with high nitrate levels was only 1.38 (p-value = 0.435, 95% CI = [0.62 - 3.07]) times the prevalence of those with low nitrate levels. The biological plausibility of a relationship between waterborne microorganisms, drinking water nitrate, drinking water chlorination, and development of an abnormal MetHb level needs to be further explored. 展开更多

Nitrite in drinking water is a potential health hazard and monitoring its concentrations in distributed water is of paramount importance. When monochloramine is used in secondary disinfection in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs), nitrite is often formed by nitrification in the biofilm on the inner surface of distribution pipes. This article attempts to identify areas with a risk of increased nitrite concentrations as well as the main reasons leading to nitrite occurrence in a large urban DWDS in Finland using spatial inspection of obligatory monitoring data. Nitrification was found to occur throughout the study area, though nitrite was not increased everywhere. Instead, nitrite was increased close to the water treatment plants (WTPs) and was connected to fresh drinking water than stagnant drinking water. Temperature effects on nitrite concentrations were surprisingly insignificant, even though it is well known that nitrification reactions are affected by temperature. The temperature dependence of ammonium and total residual chlorine was more significant than the dependence of nitrite. The findings of this study emphasize the need to monitor nitrite concentrations close to WTPs. 展开更多

Chlorine dioxide(ClO_(2))disinfection usually does not produce halogenated disinfection byproducts, but the formation of the inorganic by-product chlorite(ClO^(–)_(2))is a serious consideration. In this study, the ClO^(–)_(2)formation rule in the ClO_(2)disinfection of drinking water was investigated in the presence of three representative reductive inorganics and four natural organic matters(NOMs),respectively.Fe^(2+)and S^(2–)mainly reduced ClO_(2)to ClO^(–)_(2)at low concentrations. When ClO_(2)was consumed, the ClO^(–)_(2)would be further reduced by Fe^(2+)and S^(2–),leading to the decrease of ClO^(–)_(2).The reaction efficiency of Mn^(2+)with ClO_(2)was lower than that of Fe^(2+)and S^(2–).It might be the case that Mn O 2 generated by the reaction between Mn^(2+)and ClO_(2)had adsorption and catalytic oxidation on Mn^(2+).However,Mn^(2+)would not reduce ClO^(–)_(2).Among the four NOMs,humic acid and fulvic acid reacted with ClO_(2)actively,followed by bovine serum albumin, while sodium alginate had almost no reaction with ClO_(2).The maximum ClO^(–)_(2)yields of reductive inorganics(70%)was higher than that of NOM(around 60%).The lower the concentration of reductive substances, the more ClO^(–)_(2)could be produced by per unit concentration of reductive substances. The results of the actual water samples showed that both reductive inorganics and NOM played an important role in the formation of ClO^(–)_(2)in disinfection. 展开更多
