The following st...Previous studies have shown that children learn from educational television; however, these studies have not explored how closely the educational content of the program is integrated to the narrative. The following study uses a systematic content analysis of 100 top-rated U.S. children's television programs to explore the tangential relationship (i.e., distance) of narrative and educational content through the lens of the capacity model--which is built upon three basic components: narrative content, educational content, and the distance between them. Programs were analyzed for distance by examining lesson clarity and integration, show type, target audience age, and station type. One-way ANOVAs indicates significant differences between the means of these variables. Programs targeting younger children presented educational content that was closely integrated into the plotline of the program and helped further the story. However, as the target audience aged, the educational content became more tangential to the narrative content and was less tied to the plotline of the program.展开更多

We tested if models trained from sample surveys could be used to predict the distrib...Vegetation mapping using field surveys is expensive. Distribution modelling, based on sample surveys, might overcome this challenge. We tested if models trained from sample surveys could be used to predict the distribution of vegetation types in neighbourhood areas, and how reliable the spatial transferability was. We also tested whether we should use ecological dissimilarity or spatial distance to foresee modelling performance. Maximum entropy models were run for three vegetation types based on a vegetation map within a mountain range. Environmental variables were selected backwards, model complexity was kept low. The models are based on points from a small part of each study site, transferred into the entire sites, and then tested for performance. Environmental distance was tested using principle component analysis. All models had high uncorrected AUC values. The ability to predict presences correctly was low. The ability to predict absences correctly was high. The ability to transfer the distribution model depended on environmental distance, not spatial distance.展开更多
The Euclidean distance model with varying weights was applied to evaluate the surface water quality based on the monitoring data derived from April 2010 to February 2011 in secondary forest catchment,eucalypt plantati...The Euclidean distance model with varying weights was applied to evaluate the surface water quality based on the monitoring data derived from April 2010 to February 2011 in secondary forest catchment,eucalypt plantation catchment and rubber plantation catchment in Limu Mountain,Hainan Island.The results were compared with that of grey association analysis method,grey clustering model and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method.The results indicated that the assessment results of surface water quality in the three types of forest catchments based on Euclidean distance model with varying weights and grey clustering model were GradeⅠ,the assessment results of surface water quality in secondary forest catchment based on grey association analysis method and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method were also GradeⅠ,but besides that the assessment results of surface water quality in eucalypt plantation catchment in June 2010 and rubber plantation catchment in August 2010 based on the last two methods were GradeⅡ,those in the remain seven months were GradeⅠ,showing that the plantation in this area did not cause significantly negative effect on surface water.展开更多
