This paper gives an insight on the effect of transmission line temperature variations, resulting from loading and weather conditions changes, on a power system's steady state and dynamic performance. The impact of dynamic load models on system stability is also studied. The steady-state and dynamic stability simulation results of a 39 bus system for constant line impedance (the traditional simulation practice) are compared to the results with estimated, but realistic, temperature varied line impedances using PSLF (positive sequence load flow) software. The modulated line impedances will affect the thermal loading levels and voltage profiles of buses under steady state response, while the dynamic results will show improved damping in electro-mechanical oscillations at generator buses. 展开更多

An alternating least squares approach is developed in this paper to identify the exponential recovery dy- namic load model of wide-area power systems. The nonlinear optimization problem is decomposed to two linear least squares problems, and solved in an alternating way. Then, a new algorithm for numerical derivative calculation using dis- crete Fourier transform is proposed to attenuate the effect of noises in the process of parameter estimation. Based on the estimated dynamic load characteristics, the application on voltage stability is analyzed. Finally, numerical and laboratory examples are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the orooosed methods. 展开更多

Pipelines are the critical link between major offshore oil and gas developments and the mainland. Any inadequate on-bottom stability design could result in disruption and failure, having a devastating impact on the economy and environment. Predicting the stability behavior of offshore pipelines in hurricanes is therefore vital to the assessment of both new design and existing assets. The Gulf of Mexico has a very dense network of pipeline systems constructed on the seabed. During the last two decades, the Gulf of Mexico has experienced a series of strong hurricanes, which have destroyed, disrupted and destabilized many pipelines. This paper first reviews some of these engineering cases. Following that, three case studies are retrospectively simulated using an in-house developed program. The study utilizes the offshore pipeline and hurricane details to conduct a Dynamic Lateral Stability analysis, with the results providing evidence as to the accuracy of the modeling techniques developed. 展开更多

Composite load model of Western Electricity Coordinating Council(WECC)is a newly developed load model that has drawn great interest from the industry. To analyze its dynamic characteristics with both mathematical and engineering rigors,a detailed mathematical model is needed.Although composite load model of WECC is available in commercial software as a module and its detailed block diagrams can be found in several public reports, there is no complete mathematical representation of the full model in literature. This paper addresses a challenging problem of deriving detailed mathematical representation of composite load model of WECC from its block diagrams. In particular,we have derived the mathematical representation of the new DERA model. The developed mathematical model is verified using both MATLAB and PSS/E to show its effectiveness in representing composite load model of WECC.The derived mathematical representation serves as an important foundation for parameter identification, order reduction and other dynamic analysis. 展开更多
