English Idioms and Their Translation

This paper aims to discuss some important cultural connotations of English idioms in the perspectives of historical backgrounds, religion, productive activities, and sports activities etc. and thereby suggests some approaches to their translation regarding the complexity of reproducing, replacing and changing the image in the idioms.

On the Translation of English-Chinese Idioms

The idiomatic phrase is equal to the phrase that people use frequently language in the world that had long and splendid history all contains large quantities of idiom. They form regular phrases and short sentences through long use and refinement in the development of language. The idiomatic phrases contain varied cultural information, embody a lot of cultural feature, and cultural background. The idiomatic phrases display distinct image and figure of speech, and they also have bright national characteristic and regional (local) color. The paper includes four parts. The first chapter is to introduce the generalization of idioms and translation, and the second part is to list four different definitions of idiom according to some translational experts, next step leads in classification and sources of idiom. The third chapter introduces some common strategies of idiomatic translation such as literal translation, literal translation plus notes, free translation, and the combination of literal and free translation. At last sum up the paper.

Translation of English Idioms into Chinese

English idioms, as the quintessence of the English language, are vivid, terse and comprehensive expressions refined and sanctified through long time use by the native speakers. The nicety understanding and translation of idioms is the important part in translating. In the thesis, though the discussion of the correspondence between English and Chinese idioms, I summarize some methods of translating English idioms into Chinese.

A Cultural Study of English Idioms Translation

Language is the carrier of culture, bearing the national cultural information. As the most culturally-loaded element in any language's vocabulary, idioms have aroused more and more attention. This paper starts with the analysis of the relationship between culture, idioms and translation, and makes an investigation of cultural factors affecting idiom translation such as subjective and objective factors. Based on these analyses, the paper will propose the cultural translation principles and strategies focusing on cultural connotations of idioms in order to transfer the English idioms translation from the language level to the cultural level.

A Preliminary Study of Vocational College Students＇ English Idioms＇ Learning Through Translation

To learn English idioms well is not easy for native speakers, let alone ESL/EFL learners, which is because the meanings of idiomatic expressions cannot be determined through an analysis of their individual word meanings. However, the frequency of figurative languages is very common in English world. So, it is necessary for us to have such knowledge of English idioms in English study. Based on literature review, few studies focused their attention on examining vocational colleges EFL problems in English idioms. Moreover, fewer studies provided quantitative data to demonstrate the problems. Understanding the original texts in one language is the key to accurate translation of another language. Translation may be a good way to examine whether students understand English idioms. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate vocational college students＇ understanding level of English idioms through their translation in order to find how difficult English idioms are for them. Participants were 36 sophomore students who study at Jiaxing Vocational and Technical College. Student＇s total errors of Chinese translations could be found through the coding as well as the total accurate number of Chinese translations. The findings suggest these students＇ understanding level of English idioms is not high. It is further supported by the fact that English idioms are difficult and not translated easily from one language to another language.

On English Idioms Translation from a Cultural Perspective

With the rise of cross-cultural communication and the popularity of communication theories, translation studies have entered into a golden age of prosperity in recent years. At last, the author points out that the translation of English idioms is a hard nut to crack. It is hoped that this thesis will offer some references to English idioms translation.

Ambiguity in Translation of English and Chinese Idioms

Language is the reaction of history. Idioms are the carrier of culture and the essence of language. English idioms are the reflection of English social and cultural situation. Because of the different cultural context, when we translate English idioms we will produce ambiguities in Chinese ways. So this paper centers on the differences between English and Chinese. On the Translation of Chinese Four-character Idioms Loaded with Color Words

Chinese four-character idioms loaded with color words are the typical symbol of the Chinese culture and their transition is important to Chinese-English dictionaries.The quality of the dictionary and users' understanding are affected by the correctness and appropriateness of their translation.This paper mainly focuses on the translation of four-character Chinese idioms with color words in New Century Chinese-English Dictionary.The research shows that there are three strategies for Chinese fourcharacter idioms loaded with color words in the dictionaries:literal translation,free translation and the integration of literal translation and annotative translation.

A Study of the Translation of Chinese Idioms from Selected Works of Mao Zedong

Based on the bilingual corpus of Selected Works of Mao Zedong from Shaoxing University,this paper intended to study the English Translation of Chinese Idioms of the anthology.By comparing the translation of the idioms in different contexts,this paper analyzes the factors influencing Chinese-to-English translation,discusses the methods and strategies for translating Chinese idioms into English,and summarizes innovative conclusions.In addition to improving English proficiency,the process can enhance the learning quality of Chinese and English,translation capability,English-Chinese comparative research ability,and benefit the spreading of time-honored Chinese culture.

A Study of Idiom Translation in Bonsall’s The Red Chamber Dream

This paper combines quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the translation characteristics of idioms in B.S.Bonsall’s full English translation of The Red Chamber Dream,starting from George Steiner’s fourfold hermeneutic motion:trust,aggression,incorporation,and restitution.Through data statistics and conclusion analysis,I concluded that the translation strategies of idioms in Bonsall’s English translation are mainly literal translations,supplemented by free translations,and literal translations combined with free translations,which also provides some enlightenment for the English translation of Chinese classics.

Three Methods in the Translation of the English Idiom

Different countries have different idioms.And the idioms always reflect the culture of the country.They cover daily life and the people's attitudes toward the society and nature.As people all live in the same world and share the same nature,idioms of the similar meaning in different languages can be easily found.Some English idioms are similar in meaning to the Chinese ones.In this paper,three methods used in translating the English idioms into Chinese ones are being discussed.First of all,some English idioms having matches in the Chinese language And such English idioms can be translated into the Chinese ones.Secondly,the English idi-oms that should be translated directly.Thirdly,the English idioms that should be translated differently in different sentences.There-fore,when an idiom is being translated,the translator should consider the above-mentioned three methods.
