As Peter and Susan pointed in Teaching American English Pronunciation(1992), there are specific problem syllables with different language groups. As an ESL teacher from China, I assume it necessary to find out whether these sounds really trouble Chinese students in the ESL class I observed. I am going to pick out the most frequently occurred problem sounds and take notes how the teacher deal with them in class. In this paper, based on classroom observation and interviews, I analyzed problematic English vowels and consonants from Chinese learners, and the corresponding mediations for ESL teacher. 展开更多

为了比较L1和L2记叙文的修辞特征,随机选取两个班的英语专业三年级学生,采用看图作文的方法,分别写作汉英文记叙文,并进行对比分析。结果表明:L1和L2修辞特征既相同也存在差异。两者宏观结构基本相同;时间定位比较具体,空间定位... 为了比较L1和L2记叙文的修辞特征,随机选取两个班的英语专业三年级学生,采用看图作文的方法,分别写作汉英文记叙文,并进行对比分析。结果表明:L1和L2修辞特征既相同也存在差异。两者宏观结构基本相同;时间定位比较具体,空间定位比较笼统;直接语言和道德语言的使频度都较低。L1和L2的差异表现在L1有一半以上对中心人物和次要人物都有详细交代;L1组背景信息丰富,L2则很少;在描述故事情节时,L1组用词华丽;L2组则平铺直叙。这些差异不能支持Lee以汉语社团L2作文为研究对象而得出的研究结论。 展开更多

The previous studies show that the major problems faced by the students in writing can be classified into two categories, that is, they don't know"what to write"and"how to write". The researchers found that the specific problems existing in their writings are identified as poor content, incomplete generic structure and misuse of cohesive devices. Therefore, on the basis of the previous studies, this study attempts to use Martin's genre theory to resolve the existed problems of the Professional College English major's students in writing and enhance students' discourse writing ability. Meanwhile, this study tries to answer the following questions:(1) Compared with the traditional writing teaching methods, whether the genre-based writing method has a significant effect to improve students' writing skills;(2) Whether the genre-based writing method is possible to increase students' interest in writing. The experimental result and the questionnaire show that genre-based approach in ESL writing teaching really can improve students' writing achievement and enhance students' interest in English writing. 展开更多

This paper examines the specific research question of how co-membership in discourse style and life experience influences teacher's coauthoring on student's narratives in the ESL teaching and learning context in the United States. As a case study,a specific student's classroom narratives are transcribed and analyzed. The research findings indicate that a shared discourse style and an overlap in life experience between the teacher and the student will exert positive influence on the teacher's coauthoring on the student's narratives. Above all,sharing the same discourse style makes it possible for the teacher to recognize the rhythm of the student's narratives,to detect the moments when the student needs interactional support and offer help,and to quickly notice a potential ending of the student's narrative and expand it with open-ended questions and comments. In addition,an overlap in life experience makes it possible for the teacher to go deep into the student's narratives by contributing specific and concrete thoughts rather than responding with superficial ideas. 展开更多

This study aims to find out the effectiveness of corrective feedback on ESL writing.By reviewing and analyzing the previous six research studies,the author tries to reveal the most effective way to provide corrective feedback for L2 students and the factors that impact the processing of error feedback.Findings indicated that corrective feedback is helpful for students to improve ESL writing on both accuracy and fluency.Furthermore,correction and direct corrective feedbacks as well as the oral and written meta-linguistic explanation are the most effective ways to help students improving their writing.However,in dividual learner's difference has influence on processing corrective feedback.At last,limitation of present study and suggestion for future research were made. 展开更多

本文从建构主义视角出发,运用实证研究的方法,对148名中、澳两组二语水平不同的学习者的语言学习观念做了对比研究,运用SPSS软件对收集的数据进行整理和分析。研究发现:与中国EFL学习者相比,澳大利亚语境下ESL学习者表现出较高的自我效... 本文从建构主义视角出发,运用实证研究的方法,对148名中、澳两组二语水平不同的学习者的语言学习观念做了对比研究,运用SPSS软件对收集的数据进行整理和分析。研究发现:与中国EFL学习者相比,澳大利亚语境下ESL学习者表现出较高的自我效能感与较低的学习焦虑,尤其是考试焦虑明显低。中国EFL学习者倾向于通过阅读和背诵的方法学习英语;而澳大利亚ESL学习者更喜欢猜词和小组互动。有趣的是,澳大利亚ESL学习者的自我效能感与其二语水平成正比,中国EFL学习者的自我效能感与英语水平则成反比;在语法、词汇、课外学习等方面,中国EFL学习者的学习观念均值与英语水平成反比,而澳大利亚ESL学习者的学习观念均值与其二语水平则成正比。研究也发现,无论文化背景如何,EFL学习者和ESL学习者的学习焦虑和其二语水平均成负相关。本研究对我国的英语教学改革有着一定的启示。 展开更多
