By comparing with previous studies forthe case of the free-slip boundary condition, it is shown that the nonlinear oscillations areproduced mainly by the interaction between the baroclinic wave and zonal-mean state (totalzonal-mean flow velocity and buoyancy stratification) but the timescale of the nonlinearoscillations is largely controlled by the diffusivity. When the boundary condition is non-slip, thenonlinear oscillations are further damped and slowed by the diffusive process. Since the free-slip(non-slip) boundary condition is the zero drag (infinite drag) limit of the more realistic dragboundary condition, the nonlinear oscillations obtained with the two types of boundary conditionsare two extremes for more realistic nonlinear oscillations.展开更多

The inequality is derived by a variational calculation considering the additional invariant of zonal momentum. When applied to the Eady model in a periodic channel with finite zonal length, the improved nonlinear stability criterion is identical to the linear normal-mode stability criterion provided the channel meridional width is no greater than 0.8605... times its channel length (which is the geophysically relevant case).展开更多

The growth rate which depends on the baroclinity varies as well. However, in previous linear theories, the growth rate was considered constant, so development of disturbances was not constrained by energy sources in the linear theories. In terms of energy conservation and conversion in an isolated atmosphere, we may study the variations in the baroclinity and growth rate and draw the corresponding pictures of perturbation developments in the varying environments. The amplification for the most unstable Eady wave is discussed as an example. It will be found that growth of baroclinic perturbations constrained by energy conservation is significantly different from the growth at the initial constant rate after mature stage.展开更多

The results showed that wind speed was below 2 m/s when fog occurred, and wind velocity reduced obviously before visibility deceased, appearing a trough. Fog appeared when temperature was neady the minimum, and there was no great change in wind speed, but visibility went up gradually after temperature rose. The longer the duration of the minimum temperature, the longer the duration of the minimum visibility. Moreover, visibility would become low after temperature rose.展开更多

The experiment was conducted to develop a rapid and simple early pregnancy diagnostic method in sheep. [Method] The eady pregnancy diagnosis was conducted with serum acid titration in 1 317 female sheep (Duolang sheep, Cele sheep and Karakul sheep) after 16 -30 d post artificial insemination. [Result] After the serum acid titration, 1 128 pregnant ewes and 189 non-pregnant ewes were detected in the three sheep breeds. Compared with the actual pregnancy detection, the coincidence rate of pregnancy was 89.88% (1 013/1 128) ; the coincidence rate of non-pregnancy was 96.83% (183/189) ; and the total coincidence rate was 90.81% (1 196/1 317). Chi-square test analysis showed that no significant difference (P 〈 0.05) was found between the three sheep breeds or between any two breeds. [ Conclusion ] This serum acid titration is a simple, convenient and highly accurate method for early pregnancy diagnosis in sheep, which shows highly practical and popularizing value.展开更多
