The increased frequency and intensity of drought and wet climate events resulting from climatechange pose a major threat to global ecological stability. Variations in stability among different ecosystemshave been confirmed, but it remains unclear whether there are differences in stability within the sameterrestrial vegetation ecosystem under the influence of climate events in different directions and intensities.China's grassland ecosystem includes most grassland types and is a good choice for studying this issue. This study used the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index-12 (SPEI-12) to identify thedirections and intensities of different types of climate events, and based on Normalized DifferenceVegetation Index (NDVI), calculated the resistance and resilience of different grassland types for 30consecutive years from 1990 to 2019 (resistance and resilience are important indicators to measurestability). Based on a traditional regression model, standardized methods were integrated to analyze theimpacts of the intensity and duration of drought and wet events on vegetation stability. The resultsshowed that meadow steppe exhibited the highest stability, while alpine steppe and desert steppe had thelowest overall stability. The stability of typical steppe, alpine meadow, temperate meadow was at anintermediate level. Regarding the impact of the duration and intensity of climate events on vegetationecosystem stability for the same grassland type, the resilience of desert steppe during drought was mainlyaffected by the duration. In contrast, the impact of intensity was not significant. However, alpine steppewas mainly affected by intensity in wet environments, and duration had no significant impact. Ourconclusions can provide decision support for the future grassland ecosystem governance.展开更多

文摘The United Nations(UN)’s call for a decade of“ecosystem restoration”was prompted by the need to address the extensive impact of anthropogenic activities on natural ecosystems.Marine ecosystem restoration is increasingly necessary due to increasing habitat degredation in deep waters(>200 m depth). At these depths, which are far beyond those accessible by divers, only established and emerging robotic platforms such as remotely operated vehicles(ROVs),autonomous underwater vehicles(AUVs),landers, and crawlers can operate through manipulators and multiparametric sensor arrays(e.g.,optoacoustic imaging, omics, and environmental probes). The use of advanced technologies for deep-sea ecosystem restoration can provide:①high-resolution three-dimensional(3D)imaging and acoustic mapping of substrates and key taxa,②physical manipulation of substrates and key taxa,③real-time supervision of remote operations and long-term ecological monitoring,and④the potential to work autonomously. Here,we describe how robotic platforms with in situ manipulation capabilities and payloads of innovative sensors could autonomously conduct active restoration and monitoring across large spatial scales. We expect that these devices will be particularly useful in deep-sea habitats, such as①reef-building cold-water corals,②soft-bottom bamboo corals,and③soft-bottom fishery resources that have already been damaged by offshore industries(i.e.,fishing and oil/gas).

文摘Due to long-term human activity interference, the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park(HTRNP)of China has experienced ecological problems such as habitat fragmentation and biodiversity loss, and with the expanding scope and intensity of human activity impact, the regional ecological security is facing serious challenges.A scientific assessment of the interrelationship between human activity intensity and habitat quality in the HTRNP is a prerequisite for achieving effective management of ecological disturbances caused by human activities and can also provide scientific strategies for the sustainable development of the region.Based on the land use change data in 2000,2010,and 2020,the spatial and temporal variations and the relationship between habitat quality(HQ)and human activity intensity(HAI)in the HTRNP were explored using the integrated valuation of ecosystem services and trade-offs(InVEST)model.System dynamics and land use simulation models were also combined to conduct multi-scenario simulations of their relationships. The results showed that during 2000–2020,the habitat quality of the HTRNP improved, the intensity of human activities decreased each year, and there was a negative correlation between the two.Second, the system dynamic model could be well coupled with the land use simulation model by combining socio-economic and natural factors. The simulation scenarios of the coupling model showed that the harmonious development(HD)scenario is effective in curbing the increasing trend of human activity intensity and decreasing trend of habitat quality, with a weaker trade-off between the two compared with the baseline development(BD)and investment priority oriented(IPO)scenarios. To maintain the authenticity and integrity of the HTRNP,effective measures such as ecological corridor construction, ecological restoration, and the implementation of ecological compensation policies need to be strengthened.

文摘Land use change and occupation have led to modifications in the environment causing loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services throughout the planet. Some environments with high economic relevance, such as the ferruginous campo rupestre(rupestrian grassland known as Canga in Brazil),are even more susceptible to severe impacts due to their extreme habitat conditions and low resilience. The determination of reference ecosystems based on the intrinsic characteristics of the ecosystem is essential for conservation as well as to the implementation of ecological restoration. We proposed the reference ecosystem of the three main types of habitats of the ferruginous campo rupestre based on their floristic composition. We described the floristic composition of each habitat and evaluated the physicochemical properties of the soils and the relationship between plants and soils. All three habitats showed high diversity of plant species and many endemic species, such as Chamaecrista choriophylla,Cuphea pseudovaccinium,Lychnophora pinaster, and Vellozia subalata. The distribution of vegetation was strongly related with the edaphic characteristics, with a set of species more adapted to high concentration of base saturation, fine sand, organic carbon, and iron, while another set of species succeeded in more acidic soils with higher S and silt concentration. We provide support for the contention that the ferruginous campo rupestre is a mosaic of different habitats shaped by intrinsic local conditions.Failure to recognize the floristic composition of each particular habitat can lead to inappropriate restoration, increased habitat homogenization and increased loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. This study also advances the knowledge base for building the reference ecosystem for the different types of ferruginous campo rupestre habitats,as well as a key database for highlighting those species contribute most to community assembly in this diverse and threatened tropical mountain ecosystem.
文摘Prediction, prevention, and control of forest fires are crucial on at all scales.Developing effective fire detection systems can aid in their control. This study proposes a novel CNN(convolutional neural network)using an attention blocks module which combines an attention module with numerous input layers to enhance the performance of neural networks. The suggested model focuses on predicting the damage affected/burned areas due to possible wildfires and evaluating the multilateral interactions between the pertinent factors. The results show the impacts of CNN using attention blocks for feature extraction and to better understand how ecosystems are affected by meteorological factors. For selected meteorological data,RMSE 12.08 and MAE 7.45 values provide higher predictive power for selecting relevant and necessary features to provide optimal performance with less operational and computational costs. These findings show that the suggested strategy is reliable and effective for planning and managing fire-prone regions as well as for predicting forest fire damage.

文摘Among the impacts of climate change, there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño South-ern Oscillation(ENSO)responsible for El Niño and La Niña.However, understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is limited. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of ENSO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern Amazonia.Evaluations occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)years.Twelve permanent plots were used to sample litter.ENSO effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niño.However, this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were found. There was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity, while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind speed.Although the subject of this study requires long-term assessments, preliminary results suggests that, depending on the intensity of ENSO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and altered. The conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks, decomposition and, consequently, the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia biodiversity. The need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted, especially in Amazonia.

文摘Decaying wood is an essential element of forest ecosystems and it affects its other components. The aim of our research was to determine the decomposition rate of deadwood in various humidity and thermal conditions in the gaps formed in the montane forest stands. The research was carried out in the Babiog orski National Park. The research plots were marked out in the gaps of the stands, which were formed as a result of bark beetle gradation.Control plots were located in undisturbed stands. The research covered wood of two species–spruce and beech in the form of cubes with dimensions of 50 mm×50 mm×22 mm.Wood samples were placed directly on the soil surface and subjected to laboratory analysis after 36 months.A significant influence of the wood species and the study plot type on the physicochemical properties of the tested wood samples was found.Wood characteristics strongly correlated with soil moisture.A significantly higher mass decline of wood samples was recorded on the reference study plots, which were characterized by more stable moisture conditions.Poorer decomposition of wood in the gaps regardless of the species is related to lower moisture. The wood species covered by the study differed in the decomposition rate.Spruce wood samples were characterized by a significantly higher decomposition rate compared to beech wood samples. Our research has confirmed that disturbances that lead to the formation of gaps have a direct impact on the decomposition process of deadwood.

文摘Ecosystem services(ESs)refer to the continuous provisioning of ecosystem goods and services that benefit human beings.Over recent decades, rapid urbanization has exerted significant pressure on coastal ecosystems, resulting in biodiversity and habitat loss, environmental pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. In response to these environmental challenges, the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)were proposed.Given the pressing need to address these issues, understanding the changes in ESs under the SDGs is crucial for formulating specific ecological strategies. In this study,we first analyzed land use and cover change in the Zhejiang coasts of China during 2000–2020.Then,we investigated the spatiotemporal configuration of ESs by integrating carbon storage(CS),soil retention(SR),habitat quality(HQ)and water yield(WY)using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs(InVEST)model. The driving mechanisms of ESs,which varied by space and time, were also explored using the Geo-detector method. The results revealed that, over the past two decades:1)the Zhejiang coasts have experienced a significant increase of 2783.72 km^(2) in built-up land areas and a continuous decrease in farmland areas due to rapid urbanization;2)owing to higher precipitation, extensive vegetation cover, and reduced anthropogenic disturbances, forests emerge as a crucial land use type for maintaining ecosystem services such as HQ,CS,WY,and SR;3)ESs have generally declined across the entire Zhejiang coasts, with a significant decrease observed in the northern areas and an increase in the southern areas spatially;4)the expansion of built-up land areas emerged as the primary factor affecting ecosystem services, while the vegetation factor has been increasingly significant and is expected to become predominant in the near future. Our study provides insights of understanding of ecosystem service theory and emphasizing the importance of preserving biodiversity for long-term sustainable development, and valuable scientific references to support the ecological management decision-making for local governments.

文摘The increasing global concern regarding plastic pollution has prompted the research into the consequences of microplastics(MPs)on aquatic ecosystems.Fairy shrimp Branchinella kugenumaensis are freshwater planktonic organisms that have existed for 250 million years. This study aimed to uncover the harmful effects of MPs,with a particular focus on their size variations(0.1,1,and 5μm),on the fairy shrimp. We focused on how MPs could significantly affect the survival and growth of fairy shrimp.Notably, larger MPs,especially those measuring 5μm,caused higher mortality rates and hindered the growth compared to smaller ones. The impact of MPs continued even subsequent to depuration in clean water. The accumulation of MPs within the intestines of fairy shrimp resulted in intestinal blockages, disrupted excretory functions, and harmed intestinal epithelial cells.Examinations at the histological, cellular, and molecular levels showed that exposure to MPs triggered necroptosis in intestinal cells, accompanied by alterations in pathways related to transcription, translation, digestion, energy metabolism, and neurological functions.Furthermore, the effects of MPs on gene expression and pathways varied based on particle size, with larger MPs having a more significant effect and causing a strong response in xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism pathways. We suggest that the increasing severity of MPs pollution could pose a significant threat to the survival of fairy shrimp. This study provided vital insights into the complex relationship between microplastics and aquatic organisms, and highlighted the urgent need to address the potential devastating impact of plastic pollution on freshwater ecosystems.Additionally, due to their rapid growth, strong reproductive capacity, sensitivity, and ease of cultivation, fairy shrimp hold the potential candidate to serve as a model organism for studying the effects of MPs and other pollutants on freshwater ecosystems.

文摘Breast cancer metastasis is responsible for most breast cancer-related deaths and is influenced by many factors within the tumor ecosystem, including tumor cells and microenvironment.Breast cancer stem cells(BCSCs)constitute a small population of cancer cells with unique characteristics, including their capacity for self-renewal and differentiation.Studies have shown that BCSCs not only drive tumorigenesis but also play a crucial role in promoting metastasis in breast cancer. The tumor microenvironment(TME),composed of stromal cells, immune cells, blood vessel cells, fibroblasts, and microbes in proximity to cancer cells,is increasingly recognized for its crosstalk with BCSCs and role in BCSC survival, growth, and dissemination, thereby influencing metastatic ability.Hence,a thorough understanding of BCSCs and the TME is critical for unraveling the mechanisms underlying breast cancer metastasis. In this review,we summarize current knowledge on the roles of BCSCs and the TME in breast cancer metastasis,as well as the underlying regulatory mechanisms.Furthermore,we provide an overview of relevant mouse models used to study breast cancer metastasis,as well as treatment strategies and clinical trials addressing BCSC-TME interactions during metastasis.Overall, this study provides valuable insights for the development of effective therapeutic strategies to reduce breast cancer metastasis.

文摘Ecological stability is a core issue in ecological research and holds significant implications forhumanity. Ourconclusions can provide decision support for the future grassland ecosystem governance.

文摘Forests worldwide are experiencing increasingly intense biotic disturbances;however, assessing impacts of these disturbances is challenging due to the diverse range of organisms involved and the complex interactions among them. This particularly applies to invasive species, which can greatly alter ecological processes in their invaded territories. Here we focus on the pine wood nematode(PWN,Bursaphelenchus xylophilus),an invasive pathogen that has caused extensive mortality of pines in East Asia and more recently has invaded southern Europe. It is expected to expand its range into continental Europe with heavy impacts possible.Given the unknown dynamics of PWN in continental Europe,we reviewed laboratory and field experiments conducted in Asia and southern Europe to parameterize the main components of PWN biology and host-pathogen interactions in the Biotic Disturbance Engine(BITE),a model designed to implement a variety of forest biotic agents, from fungi to large herbivores. To simulate dynamically changing host availability and conditions,BITE was coupled with the forest landscape model iLand. The potential impacts of introducing PWN were assessed in a Central European forest landscape(40,928ha),likely within PWN’s reach in future decades.A parameter sensitivity analysis indicated a substantial influence of factors related to dispersal, colonization, and vegetation impact, whereas parameters related to population growth manifested a minor effect.Selection of different assumptions about biological processes resulted in differential timing and size of the main mortality wave, eliminating 40%–95%of pine trees within 100 years post-introduction,with a maximum annual carbon loss between 1.3%and 4.2%.PWN-induced tree mortality reduced the Gross Primary Productivity, increased heterotrophic respiration, and generated a distinct legacy sink effect in the recovery period. This assessment has corroborated the ecological plausibility of the simulated dynamics and highlighted the need for new strategies to navigate the substantial uncertainty in the agent’s biology and population dynamics.

文摘Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen(N)plays a significant role in shaping the structure and functioning of various terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. However, the magnitude of N deposition on grassland ecosystems in Central Asia still remains highly uncertain. In this study,a multi-data approach was adopted to analyze the distribution and amplitude of N deposition effects in Central Asia from 1979 to 2014 using a process-based denitrification decomposition(DNDC)model. Results showed that total vegetation carbon(C)in Central Asia was 0.35(±0.09)Pg C/a and the averaged water stress index(WSI)was 0.20(±0.02)for the whole area.Increasing N deposition led to an increase in the vegetation C of 65.56(±83.03)Tg C and slightly decreased water stress in Central Asia.Findings of this study will expand both our understanding and predictive capacity of C characteristics under future increases in N deposition, and also serve as a valuable reference for decision-making regarding water resources management and climate change mitigation in arid and semi-arid areas globally.
文摘The increasing demand for water and energy resources has led to widespread dam construction, particularly in ecologically sensitive regions like the Himalayan Range. This study focuses on the Uttarakhand state in the Western Himalayas, where hydroelectric projects(HEPs)have significantly altered river flow regimes. The research investigates the impact of flow alterations on the composition and structure of riparian vegetation in the Garhwal Himalayas, specifically analysing four rivers regulated by hydroelectric projects.Utilizing the paired-reach comparison method, control(undisturbed),diverted(downstream of barrage/dam),and altered flow conditions(downstream of water outlet)were examined. The research reveals diverse and unique riparian ecosystems, with 89 genera and 113 taxa identified, showcasing the dominance of families like Asteraceae and Lamiaceae. The study unveils the structural importance of key species such as Berberis asiatica and Artemisia nilagirica. The density, diversity, and richness of shrub and herb species vary significantly across flow conditions.Notably, altered flow conditions demonstrate resilience in vegetation structure, while diverted conditions exhibit decreased species richness and density. The study emphasizes the importance of nuanced environmental flow management for mitigating adverse effects on riparian biodiversity in the fragile Himalayan region. These findings contribute to the global discourse on dam impacts and riparian ecology, shedding light on the complexities of this dynamic relationship in a vulnerable ecosystem.
文摘Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)play a vital role in plant productivity and ecosystem functions. However, their responses to abiotic factors(i.e.,climate,physiography,and soil properties)are unknown, especially across climatic gradients and slope aspects in arid and semi-arid ecosys-tems.In this study, using 60 composite soil samples, direct and indirect effects of climate factors and slope aspects on AMF diversity, composition and spore density were studied. The findings indicate that climate has a more direct influ-ence on soil properties(P<0.001)in comparison to slope aspect(P=0.449).In contrast, climate significantly affected AMF diversity and composition, with the highest diversity in dryer areas.Soil pH had the highest correlation with different facets of AMF diversity.Structural equation modeling(SEM)indicated that only a small part of the variation in AMF diversity and spore density could be explained by climate characteristics, slope aspect and soil properties.Based on SEM results, climate was the most important determinant of AMF diversity and spore density;slope aspect had a less critical role. The outputs suggest that variations in AMF diversity are derived by the direct effects of climate and the indirect effect of soil chemical properties. In addition, with increasing dryness, sporulation and AMF diversity increased.

文摘Understanding stakeholders’differences in perceptions of ecosystem services(ES)is crucial for guiding ecolog-ical conservation and planning. However, the variations of ES perception amongst different types of residents in urbanizing areas along an urban-rural gradient are still poorly understood.Combining a questionnaire-based survey, redundancy analysis, and statistical tests,we delineated the urban-rural gradient according to local res-idents’socio-economic characteristics, and investigated the differences in local residents’perceptions of ES and potential factors affecting them in the Guanting Reservoir basin,a rapidly urbanizing basin in China. The results showed that residents living in urban-rural transitional areas attached great importance to provisioning services of providing food and domestic water, regulating services of carbon sequestration and air purification, and cul-tural services of providing education and training, which were 0.7%-13.1%,0.7%-9.1%and 2.5%-21.2%higher than that of residents in other areas, respectively.Age and occupation were major factors affecting residents’perceptions. In terms of land-use types that deliver ES,the difference in perceptions of ES delivered by grassland was the greatest amongst residents. Our results support recommendations for policymakers to take into account the stakeholders’diverse perceptions, thus promoting residents’sense of gain on ES.

文摘Climate change has led to significant fluctuations in marine ecosystems, including alterations in the structure and function of food webs and ecosystem status.Coastal ecosystems are critical to the functioning of the earth’s lifesupporting systems. However, temporal variations in most of these ecosystems have remained unclear so far.In this study,we employed a linear inverse model with Markov Chain Monte Carlo(LIM-MCMC)combined with ecological network analysis to reveal the temporal variations of the food web in Haizhou Bay of China.Food webs were constructed based on diet composition data in this ecosystem during the year of 2011 and 2018.Results indicated that there were obvious temporal variations in the composition of food webs in autumn of 2011 and 2018.The number of prey and predators for most species in food web decreased in 2018 compared with 2011,especially for Trichiurus lepturus, zooplankton,Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, and Loligo sp.Ecological network analysis showed that the complexity of food web structure could be reflected by comprehensive analysis of compartmentalized indicators.Haizhou Bay ecosystem was more mature and stable in 2011,while the ecosystem’s self-sustainability and recovery from disturbances were accelerated from 2011 to 2018.These findings contribute to our understanding of the dynamics of marine ecosystems and highlight the importance of comprehensive analysis of marine food webs. This work provides a framework for assessing and comparing temporal variations in marine ecosystems, which provides essential information and scientific guidance for the Ecosystem-based Fisheries Management.
