Astronomical Techniques and Instruments (ATI) Editorial Board 2024 working meeting and the inaugural meeting of the first Young Editorial Board were successfully held

On June 21,2024,the 2024 working meeting of the Editorial Board of Astronomical Techniques and Instruments(ATI)and the inaugural meeting of the first Young Editorial Board were successfully held in Dali,Yunnan,China.More than 30 editorial board members and young editorial board members of ATI from research institutes such as Yunnan Observatories,CAS,Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics&Technology,CAS,Institute of Optics and Electronics,CAS,as well as universities like Nanjing University,Sun Yat-sen University,and Shandong University attended the meeting.

Editorial board publication strategy and acceptance rates in Turkish national journals

Purpose: This study takes advantage of newly released journal metrics to investigate whether local journals with more qualified boards have lower acceptance rates, based on data from 219 Turkish national journals and 2,367 editorial board members.Design/methodology/approach: This study argues that journal editors can signal their scholarly quality by publishing in reputable journals. Conversely, editors publishing inside articles in affiliated national journals would send negative signals. The research predicts that high(low) quality editorial boards will conduct more(less) selective evaluation and their journals will have lower(higher) acceptance rates. Based on the publication strategy of editors, four measures of board quality are defined: Number of board inside publications per editor(INSIDER), number of board Social Sciences Citation Index publications per editor(SSCI), inside-to-SSCI article ratio(ISRA), and board citation per editor(CITATION). Predictions are tested by correlation and regression analysis.Findings: Low-quality board proxies(INSIDER, ISRA) are positively, and high-quality board proxies(SSCI, CITATION) are negatively associated with acceptance rates. Further, we find that receiving a larger number of submissions, greater women representation on boards, and Web of Science and Scopus(WOSS) coverage are associated with lower acceptance rates. Acceptance rates for journals range from 12% to 91%, with an average of 54% and a median of 53%. Law journals have significantly higher average acceptance rate(68%) than other journals, while WOSS journals have the lowest(43%). Findings indicate some of the highest acceptance rates in Social Sciences literature, including competitive Business and Economics journals that traditionally have low acceptance rates. Limitations: Research relies on local context to define publication strategy of editors. Findings may not be generalizable to mainstream journals and core science countries where emphasis on research quality is stronger and editorial selection is based on scientific merit.Practical implications: Results offer useful insights into editorial management of national journals and allow us to make sense of local editorial practices. The importance of scientific merit for selection to national journal editorial boards is particularly highlighted for sound editorial evaluation of submitted manuscripts.Originality/value: This is the first attempt to document a significant relation between acceptance rates and editorial board publication behavior.

As Zoological Research enters its 33rd year of publication, let us reflect back on the last three decades of dramatic change to China and the scientific community. In the latter half of the 20th century, scientific research was almost exclusively published in the United States or Europe. We started Zoological Research in 1980 with the goal of creating a strong Chinese-language journal to support regional and national research and push towards developing an innovative and collaborative Chinese scientific community.

On 16 March 2004, we received an appeal from Dr. Qing WANG of the United States’ Naval Postgraduate School questioning the legitimacy of the paper entitled, Modeling Marine Stratocumulus with a Detailed Micro physical Scheme, that was published by ZHAO Chunsheng and Yutaka Ishizaka in the January 2004 issue of the Advances in Atmospheric Sciences (AAS). She pointed out that the modei described in the paper was developed by her group in which the first author, Dr. Zhao, worked as a visiting scholar during February 1997-February 1998. The authors should not have claimed in the paper that they developed the modei. In particular, they should not have published her group’s work as their own. Thus, Dr. Wang requested that the paper be retracted from AAS.

Meeting report of the chief editorial board meeting for World Journal of Diabetes 2021

The 2021 online editorial board meeting of the World Journal of Diabetes(WJD)was held on November 9,2021.Jin-Lei Wang,General Manager on behalf of the Baishideng Publishing Group,and Professor Islam,one of the Editors-in-Chiefs(EiCs)of the WJD,organized the meeting.Three EiCs and 18 Baishideng Publishing Group staff attended the meeting.The meeting goal was to brief the EiCs on the journal’s performance,discuss the issues of concern of the EiCs,and gather ideas for the journal’s development in 2022.As of November 8,the WJD had received 287 manuscripts since the year’s start,among which 122 met the criteria for publication.These numbers represent an increase of 117.4%for submissions and 110.3%for publications compared to those in 2020.However,how to effectively control the academic quality of manuscripts and attract highquality original article submissions remain a challenge.The EiCs provided feedback and suggestions centered on three topics:(1)Who should and how to control the academic quality of the manuscripts;(2)How the EiCs perform their responsibilities;and(3)The distinctive and shared responsibilities of the publisher and the EiCs.

As the offshore industries move from shallow to deep waters in excess of 1000 m, there has been rapid development of ocean engineering practices. Innovations in theoretical and applied me- chanics have been essential in this shift and in underpinning the exploitation of offshore oil and gas and renewable energy re- sources worldwide. Understanding and predicting physical mech- anisms of structure-soil interactions are vital for the stability and safety of offshore engineering structures. Accordingly, in this spe- cial issue of Theoretical ＆ Applied Mechanics Letters （TAME）, eight letter-papers are published to present recent advances in analyti- cal and numerical analysis and in physical modeling of offshore structure-soil interactions in marine environments.
