A Hybrid Level Set Optimization Design Method of Functionally Graded Cellular Structures Considering Connectivity

With the continuous advancement in topology optimization and additive manufacturing(AM)technology,the capability to fabricate functionally graded materials and intricate cellular structures with spatially varying microstructures has grown significantly.However,a critical challenge is encountered in the design of these structures–the absence of robust interface connections between adjacent microstructures,potentially resulting in diminished efficiency or macroscopic failure.A Hybrid Level Set Method(HLSM)is proposed,specifically designed to enhance connectivity among non-uniform microstructures,contributing to the design of functionally graded cellular structures.The HLSM introduces a pioneering algorithm for effectively blending heterogeneous microstructure interfaces.Initially,an interpolation algorithm is presented to construct transition microstructures seamlessly connected on both sides.Subsequently,the algorithm enables the morphing of non-uniform unit cells to seamlessly adapt to interconnected adjacent microstructures.The method,seamlessly integrated into a multi-scale topology optimization framework using the level set method,exhibits its efficacy through numerical examples,showcasing its prowess in optimizing 2D and 3D functionally graded materials(FGM)and multi-scale topology optimization.In essence,the pressing issue of interface connections in complex structure design is not only addressed but also a robust methodology is introduced,substantiated by numerical evidence,advancing optimization capabilities in the realm of functionally graded materials and cellular structures. 展开更多

Despite the series-parallel hybrid electric vehicle inherits the performance advantages from both series and parallel hybrid electric vehicle, few researches about the series-parallel hybrid electric vehicle have been revealed because of its complex co nstruction and control strategy. In this paper, a series-parallel hybrid electric bus as well as its control strategy is revealed, and a control parameter optimization approach using the real-valued genetic algorithm is proposed. The optimization objective is to minimize the fuel consumption while sustain the battery state of charge, a tangent penalty function of state of charge(SOC) is embodied in the objective function to recast this multi-objective nonlinear optimization problem as a single linear optimization problem. For this strategy, the vehicle operating mode is switched based on the vehicle speed, and an "optimal line" typed strategy is designed for the parallel control. The optimization parameters include the speed threshold for mode switching, the highest state of charge allowed, the lowest state of charge allowed and the scale factor of the engine optimal torque to the engine maximum torque at a rotational speed. They are optimized through numerical experiments based on real-value genes, arithmetic crossover and mutation operators. The hybrid bus has been evaluated at the Chinese Transit Bus City Driving Cycle via road test, in which a control area network-based monitor system was used to trace the driving schedule. The test result shows that this approach is feasible for the control parameter optimization. This approach can be applied to not only the novel construction presented in this paper, but also other types of hybrid electric vehicles. 展开更多

The world’s increasing population requires the process industry to produce food,fuels,chemicals,and consumer products in a more efficient and sustainable way.Functional process materials lie at the heart of this challenge.Traditionally,new advanced materials are found empirically or through trial-and-error approaches.As theoretical methods and associated tools are being continuously improved and computer power has reached a high level,it is now efficient and popular to use computational methods to guide material selection and design.Due to the strong interaction between material selection and the operation of the process in which the material is used,it is essential to perform material and process design simultaneously.Despite this significant connection,the solution of the integrated material and process design problem is not easy because multiple models at different scales are usually required.Hybrid modeling provides a promising option to tackle such complex design problems.In hybrid modeling,the material properties,which are computationally expensive to obtain,are described by data-driven models,while the well-known process-related principles are represented by mechanistic models.This article highlights the significance of hybrid modeling in multiscale material and process design.The generic design methodology is first introduced.Six important application areas are then selected:four from the chemical engineering field and two from the energy systems engineering domain.For each selected area,state-ofthe-art work using hybrid modeling for multiscale material and process design is discussed.Concluding remarks are provided at the end,and current limitations and future opportunities are pointed out. 展开更多

Consequently, the investigation of peptide-based drugs is a highlight in the research and development of new drugs. However, natural peptides are not always ideal choices for clinical application due to their limited number and sometimes cytotoxicity to normal cells. Aiming to gain stronger or specific or novel biological effects and overcome the disadvantages of natural peptides, artificial hybrid peptides have been designed by combining the sequence of two or more different peptides with varied biological functions. Compared to natural peptides, hybrid peptides have shown better therapeutic potentials against bacteria, tumors, and metabolic diseases. In this review, design strategies, structure features and recent development of hybrid peptides are summarized;future directions for the research and development of hybrid peptide drugs are also discussed. 展开更多

A hybrid conceptual design approach was introduced in this study to develop a conceptual design of oil palm polymer composite automotive crash box(ACB). A combination of theory of inventive problem solving(TRIZ), morphological charts and biomimetics was applied where the foremost requirements in terms of the material characteristics, function specifications, force identification, root cause analysis, geometry profile and design selection criteria were considered. The strategy was to use creations of nature to inspire five innovative conceptual designs of the ACB structure and the AHP method was applied to perform the pairwise analysis of selecting the best ACB conceptual design. A new conceptual design for a composite ACB was conceived bearing in mind the properties of natural fibre, unlike those of conventional materials such as steel alloys and aluminium alloys. The design with the highest ranking(26.6 %) was chosen as the final conceptual design, which was the one with a honeycomb structure for the outermost profile, reinforced with a spider web structure inside the part, supported by fibre foam structure extracted from the woodpecker sponge tissue at the centre to maximize the energy absorption capability. The new design could solve the problem of bending collapse which is a major cause of failure to absorb maximum impact energy for ACB during collision. However, the final conceptual design will still need several modifications for production and assembly purposes, which will be completed in a further study. 展开更多

First, the vehicle scheme and its improved duel-spring flexible suspension design are described. Then, its fuel consumption model is proposed accordingly with respect to two vehicle operating parameters. Aiming at minimizing the fuel consumption, two Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are designed and implemented. For the initial one (GA-1), despite getting an acceptable result, there still existed some problems in its optimiza- tion process. Based on an analysis of the defects of GA-1, an improved algorithm GA-2 was developed whose effectiveness and stability were embodied in the optimization process and results. The proposed design scheme and optimization approaches can provide valuable references for this new kind of vehicle with industry, military or scientific exploitations, etc. promising applications in the areas of agriculture, petroleum industry, military or scientific explaitations, etc. 展开更多

Operational conditions for maximum production were determined with twelve parameters under consideration: the concentration of FeCl3, induction at OD578 (optical density measured at 578 nm), induction time and inoculum concentration. Initially, Plackett-Burman (PB) design was used to evaluate the process variables relevant in relation to P450 BM-3 production. Four statistically significant parameters for response were selected and utilized in order to optimize the process. With the 416C model of hybrid design, response surfaces were generated, and P450 BM-3 production was improved to 57.90×10^-3 U/ml by the best combinations of the physicochemical parameters at optimum levels of 0,12 mg/L FeCl3, inoculum concentration of 2.10%, induction at OD578 equal to 1.07, and with 6.05 h of induction. 展开更多

The genetic/gradient-based hybrid algorithm is introduced and used in the design studies of aeroelastic optimization of large aircraft wings to attain skin distribution,stiffness distribution and design sensitivity.The program of genetic algorithm is developed by the authors while the gradient-based algorithm borrows from the modified method for feasible direction in MSC/NASTRAN software.In the hybrid algorithm,the genetic algorithm is used to perform global search to avoid to fall into local optima,and then the excellent individuals of every generation optimized by the genetic algorithm are further fine-tuned by the modified method for feasible direction to attain the local optima and hence to get global optima.Moreover,the application effects of hybrid genetic algorithm in aeroelastic multidisciplinary design optimization of large aircraft wing are discussed,which satisfy multiple constraints of strength,displacement,aileron efficiency,and flutter speed.The application results show that the genetic/gradient-based hybrid algorithm is available for aeroelastic optimization of large aircraft wings in initial design phase as well as detailed design phase,and the optimization results are very consistent.Therefore,the design modifications can be decreased using the genetic/gradient-based hybrid algorithm. 展开更多

The hybrid tracked vehicles(HTV)usually adopt series hybrid powertrain with extra steering mechanism,which has relatively low transmission efficiency and reduces the flexibility of structural arrangement.To overcome the disadvantages,a new kind of single-mode powertrain has been proposed.The power-split hybrid powertrain is composed of three planetary gear(PG)sets connected to one engine,left and right track outputs,and three motors.The proposed powertrain can realize steering while going forward by controlling the output torque on each side without extra steering mechanism or steering shaft.Due to the diversity of the connection way between components and planetary gear sets,a rapid configuration design approach is proposed for the design selection of HTV.The automated dynamic modelling method can show the one-to-one correspondence with the selected feasible groups by establishing two characteristic matrices,which is more simple than other researches.The analytically-based method is proposed to classify all possible connection designs into several groups to decrease the searching scope with improved design efficiency.Finally,the optimal control strategy is used to find the design with optimal fuel economy under typical condition of HTV.The case study is implemented by the proposed design approach which demonstrates better design performances compared with the existing series-hybrid HTV. 展开更多

Taking use of Visual C++,the second exploiting software kit provided by Pro/ENGINEER and ANSYS GUI/APDL modeling patterns,an integration method of 3D CAD and CAE is achieved,which includes regeneration of 3D parametric model,synchronous updating and analysis of FEA model. Minimizing the impact of the mixed uncertainties(i.e.,the aleatory uncertainty and the epistemic uncertainty) for a complex product of compliant mechanism(CPCM) quality improvement signifies a fascinating research topic to enhance the robustness.However, most of the existing works in the CPCM robust design optimization neglect the mixed uncertainties, which might result in an unstable design or even an infeasible design. To solve this issue, a response surface methodology-based hybrid robust design optimization(RSM-based HRDO) approach is proposed to improve the robustness of the quality characteristic for the CPCM via considering the mixed uncertainties in the robust design optimization. A bridge-type amplification mechanism is used to manifest the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The comparison results prove that the proposed approach can not only keep its superiority in the robustness, but also provide a robust scheme for optimizing the design parameters. 展开更多

The Hefei Advanced Light Facility(HALF)proposed by the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory is a green-field vacuum ultraviolet and soft X-ray diffraction-limited storage ring light source with a beam energy of 2.2 GeV and emittance goal of less than 100 pm rad.Inspired by the ESRF-EBS hybrid multi-bend achromat(HMBA),SLS-2,and Diamond-II lattices,we have proposed and designed a modified H6BA lattice as the baseline lattice of the HALF storage ring with 20 identical cells and a natural emittance of approximately 86 pm rad.In this paper,three other types of HMBA lattices including two H7BA lattices and a H6BA lattice are designed for HALF with the same number of cells.The main storage ring proper-ties of these four HMBA lattices are compared.Because the intra-beam scattering(IBS)effect is significant in the HALF storage ring,we calculate and compare the equilibrium emittances of the four lattices with IBS included.These comparisons show that the present modified H6BA lattice,which has a relatively low equilibrium emittance and more straight sections,is preferred for the HALF storage ring after a comprehensive consideration. 展开更多

A novel method of scheme design is proposed for power shifting transmissions of parallel hybrid electric vehicles(HEVs).First,shift sequences considering the path of power flow and shift logics are analyzed based on the graph theory model,abstracted from the degree-of-freedom(DOF)of the schemes.Second,the scheme of gear-pair and shaft,defined as the scheme that ignores the arrangement of synchronizers,is derived from the basic configuration,defined as the scheme of gear-pair and shaft that contains only one of each type of the variable connections,and the numbers of each type of the variable connections.Finally,a multi-parameter scheme,including the arrangement of synchronizers and gear ratios,is designed to optimize the results of synthesis.This method helps to gain a deeper understanding of the systematic design of other fixed gear transmission schemes,such as automated mechanical transmission,dual clutch transmission,and even some novel multi-input transmission. 展开更多

In recent years,a new generation of storage ring-based light sources,known as diffraction-limited storage rings(DLSRs),whose emittance approaches the diffraction limit for the range of X-ray wavelengths of interest to the scientific community,has garnered significant attention worldwide.Researchers have begun to design and build DLSRs.Among various DLSR proposals,the hybrid multibend achromat(H-MBA)lattice enables sextupole strengths to be maintained at a reasonable level when minimizing the emittance;hence,it has been adopted in many DLSR designs.Based on the H-7BA lattice,the design of the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade Project(APS-U)can effectively reduce emittance by replacing six quadrupoles with anti-bends.Herein,we discuss the feasibility of designing an APS-U-type H-MBA lattice for the Southern Advanced Photon Source,a mid-energy DLSR light source with ultralow emittance that has been proposed to be built adjacent to the China Spallation Neutron Source.Both linear and nonlinear dynamics are optimized to obtain a detailed design of this type of lattice.The emittance is minimized,while a sufficiently large dynamic aperture(DA)and momentum acceptance(MA)are maintained.A design comprising 36 APS-U type H-7BAs,with an energy of 3 GeV and a circumference of 972 m,is achieved.The horizontal natural emittance is 20 pm·rad,with a horizontal DA of 5.8 mm,a vertical DA of 4.5 mm,and an MA of 4%,as well as a long longitudinal damping time of 120 ms.Subsequently,a few modifications are performed based on the APS-U-type lattice to reduce the maximum value of damping time from 120 to 44 ms while maintaining other performance parameters at the same level. 展开更多

This study presents a new method for designing algorithm for a triplet lens with one or two elements that are made of a gradient index medium (GRIN). This method is based upon considering a well-known designed triplet lens (Cooke triplet lens) as a target lens for designing of the Hybrid Triplet Lens (HTL). Our design was based upon keeping the total optical path length for the axial ray fixed for each case of design. The results showed that several designs for the HTL have the same total powers of the target lens. These designs depend on the variation of the GRIN element parameter values and the order of the GRIN element position in the system. These HTL designs have been evaluated by considering several optical merit functions, i.e., the root mean square (RMS) spot radius, wave front error and the spherical aberration. To achieve the optimal design, these functions are compared for the target lens and the HTL designs through a wide range of field angles. 展开更多

The superconducting tokamak HT-7U [1] has been designed by the Institute of Plasma Physics since 1998 and will be set up before 2003. The 1.2 MW /2.45 GHz HT-7U LHCD (Lower hybrid current drive) system which being the most efficient non-induction device can heat the plasma and drive the plasma current has been efficiently in operation 'owl and a particular design of the 2.8 MW/-35 kV high-voltage DC power supply has been already completed and will apply to the klystron of LHCD on HT-7 and the future HT-7U, and the project of the power supply has been examined and approved professionally by an authorized group of high-level specialist in the institute of Plasma Physics. The safety of hydrog... This paper introduced the design of the hybrid powertrain of the Fuel Cell City Bus demonstrated in 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The configuration of the hybrid fuel cell powertrain was introduced. The safety of hydrogen storage and delivery system, the hydrogen leakage alarm system were developed. The real-time distributed control and diagnosis system based on the Time Trigger Controller Area Network (TTCAN) with 10 ms basic control period was developed. The concept and implementation of processor (or controller) monitor and process (or task) monitor technique based on the TYCAN were applied in this paper. The fault tolerant control algorithm of the fuel cell engine and the battery man- agement system were considered. The demonstration experience verified that the fault tolerant control was very important for the fuel cell city bus. 展开更多

Hybrid technology has been widely developed for various vehicles in recent years.However,due to the limitation of size and space,it is difficult to apply the technology in the small two-wheeled vehicles,especially scooters.For scooters,the hybrid system could be with small capacity,and must be simple and affordable.The Purpose of this study is to analyze and develop the conceptual designs of fuel-electric hybrid systems especially for scooters.Firstly,the graph called "function power graph(FPG)" is defined,which transforms traditional mechanical schematic diagrams into simplified graphs,and makes the characteristics of hybrid systems can be identified clearly.Based on the FPG,a systematic method for synthesizing all possible arrangements of hybrid systems,then,is developed,and the hybrid system arrangements with one internal combustion engine(ICE),one electric machine(M/G),and some mechanical clutch units are all enumerated.In order to evaluate the applicability of these design concepts for Scooters,twelve system functions and three system complexities are defined,and this evaluation process can be automated numerically by using a computer program,which is Matlab in this study.With the systematic design and analysis methods developed,the function capability and characteristics of current hybrid systems can be easily identified,and also,new and useful hybrid systems are found for future possible applications. 展开更多

The theoretical formulae for predicting coefficient of thermal ex-pansion (CTE) value are established. In the experiments, carbon/glasa andcarbon / Keviar are accepted to be the hybrid form. The variation of CTE values of hybridcomposites with structure parameter is analyzed. Besides, hybrid composites with zeroCTE arc studied and designed. And some typical ply forms of laminates with zero CTE arepresented. The investigation shows that it is easier for hybrid multi-directional compositesto meet the requirements of zero-expansion. 展开更多
