The Reproducing Kernel Particle Method (RKPM) is one of several new meshless numerical methods de- veloped internationally in recent years. The ideal elasto-plastic constitutive model of material under a Taylor impact is characterized by the Jaumann stress- and strain-rates. An updated Lagrangian format is used for the calculation in a nu- merical analysis. With the RKPM, this paper deals with the calculation model for the Taylor impact and deduces the control equation for the impact process. A program was developed to simulate numerically the Taylor impact of projec- tiles composed of several kinds of material. The simulation result is in good accordance with both the test results and the Taylor analysis outcome. Since the meshless method is not limited by meshes, it is believed to be widely applicable to such complicated processes as the Taylor impact, including large deformation and strain and to the study of the dy- namic qualities of materials. 展开更多

In engineering practice,it is often necessary to determine functional relationships between dependent and independent variables. These relationships can be highly nonlinear, and classical regression approaches cannot always provide sufficiently reliable solutions.Nevertheless,Machine Learning(ML)techniques, which offer advanced regression tools to address complicated engineering issues, have been developed and widely explored. This study investigates the selected ML techniques to evaluate their suitability for application in the hot deformation behavior of metallic materials. The ML-based regression methods of Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs),Support Vector Machine(SVM),Decision Tree Regression(DTR),and Gaussian Process Regression(GPR)are applied to mathematically describe hot flow stress curve datasets acquired experimentally for a medium-carbon steel.Although the GPR method has not been used for such a regression task before, the results showed that its performance is the most favorable and practically unrivaled;neither the ANN method nor the other studied ML techniques provide such precise results of the solved regression analysis. 展开更多

To elucidate the mechanisms of regulating the microstructure uniformity in 7050 aluminum forgings through surface cumulative plastic deformation(SCPD),the microstructure under different solution treatments was investigated using metallographic observation(OM),electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and X-ray diffraction(XRD).The findings demonstrate that the most uniform microstructure in the forgings is achieved with a solution treatment at 470℃for 30 min.The SCPD process generates a significant number of needle-shaped precipitates, resulting in a higher dislocation density and stored energy.Solution treatments alleviate the pinning effect of second-phase particles and facilitate static recrystallization(SRX)in forgings, leading to a reduction in grain size.Additionally, mechanical testing results demonstrate 7%−13%increase in tensile strength and more uniform elongation of the forgings in different directions. 展开更多

Uranium–molybdenum(U–Mo) alloys are critical for nuclear power generation and propulsion because of their superior thermal conductivity, irradiation stability, and anti-swelling properties. This study explores the plastic deformation mechanisms of γ-phase U–Mo alloys using molecular dynamics(MD) simulations. In the slip model, the generalized stacking fault energy(GSFE) and the modified Peierls–Nabarro(P–N) model are used to determine the competitive relationships among different slip systems. In the twinning model, the generalized plane fault energy(GPFE) is assessed to evaluate the competition between slip and twinning. The findings reveal that among the three slip systems, the {110}<111>slip system is preferentially activated, while in the {112}<111> system, twinning is favored over slip, as confirmed by MD tensile simulations conducted in various directions. Additionally, the impact of Mo content on deformation behavior is emphasized. Insights are provided for optimizing process conditions to avoid γ → α′′ transitions, thereby maintaining a higher proportion of γ-phase U–Mo alloys for practical applications. 展开更多

Grouting has been the most effective approach to mitigate water inrush disasters in underground engineering due to its ability to plug groundwater and enhance rock strength.Nevertheless, there is a lack of potent numerical tools for assessing the grouting effectiveness in water-rich fractured strata. In this study, the hydro-mechanical coupled discontinuous deformation analysis(HM-DDA)is inaugurally extended to simulate the grouting process in a water-rich discrete fracture network(DFN),including the slurry migration, fracture dilation, water plugging in a seepage field, and joint reinforcement after coagulation. To validate the capabilities of the developed method, several numerical examples are conducted incorporating the Newtonian fluid and Bingham slurry. The simulation results closely align with the analytical solutions.Additionally,a set of compression tests is conducted on the fresh and grouted rock specimens to verify the reinforcement method and calibrate the rational properties of reinforced joints. An engineering-scale model based on a real water inrush case of the Yonglian tunnel in a water-rich fractured zone has been established. The model demonstrates the effectiveness of grouting reinforcement in mitigating water inrush disaster. The results indicate that increased grouting pressure greatly affects the regulation of water outflow from the tunnel face and the prevention of rock detachment face after excavation. 展开更多

To address the issue of extensive deformation in the Tabaiyi Tunnel caused by the fault zone, nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)technology was employed to analyze the physical and mechanical properties of waterabsorbing mudstone. This analysis aimed to understand the mechanism behind the significant deformations.Drawing from the principle of excavation stress compensation,a support scheme featuring NPR anchorcables and an asymmetric truss support system was devised. To validate the scheme, numerical analysis using a combination of the Discrete Element Method(DEM)-Finite Element Method(FEM)was conducted.Additionally, similar material model tests and engineering measurements were carried out.Field experiments were also performed to evaluate the NPR anchor-cable and truss support system, focusing on anchor cable forces, pressures between the truss and surrounding rock, pressures between the initial support and secondary lining,as well as the magnitude of settlement and convergence deformation in the surrounding rock. The results indicate that the waterinduced expansion of clay minerals, resulting from damage caused by fissure water, accelerated the softening of the mudstone's internal structure, leading to significant deformations in the Tabaiyi Tunnel under high tectonic stress. The original support design fell short as the length of the anchor rods was smaller than the expansion depth of the plastic zone.As a result, the initial support structure bore the entire load from the surrounding rock, and a non-coupled deformation contact was observed between the double-arch truss and the surrounding rock. The adoption of NPR asymmetric anchor-cable support effectively restrained the expansion and asymmetric distribution characteristics of the plastic zone.Considering the mechanical degradation caused by water absorption in mudstone, the rigid constraint provided by the truss proved crucial for controlling the stability of the surrounding rock. These research findings hold significant implications for managing large deformations in soft rock tunnels situated within fractured zones under high tectonic stress conditions. 展开更多

Soft rock squeezing deformation mainly consists of pre-peak damage-dilatancy and post-peak fracture-bulking at the excavation unloading instant, and creep-dilatancy caused by time-dependent damage and fracturing.Based on the classic elastoplastic and Perzyna over-stress viscoplastic theories,as well as triaxial unloading confining pressure test and triaxial unloading creep test results,an elastoplastic and viscoplastic damage constitutive model is established for the short-and long-term dilatancy and fracturing behavior of soft rock squeezing deformation.Firstly, the criteria for each deformation and failure stage are expressed as a linear function of confining pressure.Secondly, the total damage evolution equation considering time-dependent damage is proposed, including the initial damage produced at the excavation instant,in which the damage variable increases exponentially with the lateral strain, and creep damage.Thirdly,a transient five-stages elasto-plastic constitutive equation for the short-term deformation after excavation that comprised of elasticity,pre-peak damage-dilatancy,post-peak brittle-drop,linear strain-softening,and residual perfectly-plastic regimes is developed based on incremental elasto-plastic theory and the nonassociated flow rule.Fourthly, regarding the timedependent properties of soft rock, based on the Perzyna viscoplastic over-stress theory,a viscoplastic damage model is set up to capture creep damage and dilatancy behavior.Viscoplastic strain is produced when the stress exceeds the initial static yield surface fs;the distance between the static yield surface fs and the dynamic yield surface fd determines the viscoplastic strain rate. Finally, the established constitutive model is numerically implemented and field applied to the-848 m belt conveyer haulage roadway of Huainan Panyidong Coal Mine.Laboratory test results and in-situ monitoring results validate the rationality of the established constitutive model. The presented model takes both the transient and time-dependent damage and fracturing into consideration. 展开更多

Relative permeability is an indispensable property for characterizing the unsaturated flow and induced deformation in soils. The widely used Mualem model is inadequate for deformable soils because of its assumption of a rigid pore structure and the resultant unique dependence of the tortuosity factor on the volumetric water content. In this study, a unified relationship between the relative permeability and the effective degree of saturation was proposed for deformable soils by incorporating our newly developed water retention curve model into the original Mualem model, in which a new tortuosity factor was defined using the fractal dimension of flow paths and the mean radius of water-filled pores for representing the effect of pore structure variation. The modified deformation-dependent relative permeability model was verified using test data on five types of soils; the verification revealed a much better performance of the proposed model than the original model, which commonly overestimates the relative permeability of deformable soils. Finally, the proposed model was implemented in a coupled numerical model for examining the unsaturated flow and elastoplastic deformation processes in a soil slope induced by rain infiltration. The numerical results showed that the deformation-dependent nature of relative permeability has a remarkable effect on the elastoplastic deformation in the slope and that neglect of the deformation-dependent behavior of relative permeability causes overestimation of the depth of failure. 展开更多

The deformation monitoring of long-span railway bridges is significant to ensure the safety of human life and property. The interferometric synthetic aperture radar(In SAR)technology has the advantage of high accuracy in bridge deformation monitoring. This study monitored the deformation of the Ganjiang Super Bridge based on the small baseline subsets(SBAS)In SAR technology and Sentinel-1A data.We analyzed the deformation results combined with bridge structure, temperature, and riverbed sediment scouring. The results are as follows:(1)The Ganjiang Super Bridge area is stable overall, with deformation rates ranging from-15.6 mm/yr to 10.7 mm/yr(2)The settlement of the Ganjiang Super Bridge deck gradually increases from the bridge tower toward the main span, which conforms to the typical deformation pattern of a cable-stayed bridge.(3)The sediment scouring from the riverbed cause the serious settlement on the bridge’s east side compared with that on the west side.(4)The bridge deformation negatively correlates with temperature, with a faster settlement at a higher temperature and a slow rebound trend at a lower temperature. The study findings can provide scientific data support for the health monitoring of long-span railway bridges. 展开更多

The real-time dynamic deformation monitoring of offshore platforms under environmental excitation is crucial to their safe operation.Although Global Navigation Satellite System-Precise Point Positioning(GNSS-PPP)has been considered for this purpose, its monitoring accuracy is relatively low. Moreover, the influence of background noise on the dynamic monitoring accuracy of GNSS-PPP remains unclear.Hence,it is imperative to further validate the feasibility of GNSS-PPP for deformation monitoring of offshore platforms. To address these concerns, vibration table tests with different amplitudes and frequencies are conducted. The results demonstrate that GNSS-PPP can effectively monitor horizontal vibration displacement as low as±30 mm,which is consistent with GNSS-RTK.Furthermore,the spectral characteristic of background noise in GNSS-PPP is similar to that of GNSS-RTK(Real Time Kinematic).Building on this observation,an improved Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise(CEEMDAN)has been proposed to de-noise the data and enhance the dynamic monitoring accuracy of GNSS-PPP.Field monitoring application research is also undertaken, successfully extracting and analyzing the dynamic deformation of an offshore platform structure under environmental excitation using GNSS-PPP monitoring in conjunction with improved CEEMDAN de-noising.By comparing the de-noised dynamic deformation trajectories of the offshore platform during different periods,it is observed that the platform exhibits reversible alternating vibration responses under environmental excitation, with more pronounced displacement deformation in the direction of load action. The research results confirm the feasibility and potential of GNSS-PPP for dynamic deformation monitoring of offshore platforms. 展开更多

Since the impoundment of Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR)in 2003,numerous slopes have experienced noticeable movement or destabilization owing to reservoir level changes and seasonal rainfall. One case is the Outang landslide,a large-scale and active landslide,on the south bank of the Yangtze River. The latest monitoring data and site investigations available are analyzed to establish spatial and temporal landslide deformation characteristics.Data mining technology, including the two-step clustering and Apriori algorithm,is then used to identify the dominant triggers of landslide movement. In the data mining process, the two-step clustering method clusters the candidate triggers and displacement rate into several groups, and the Apriori algorithm generates correlation criteria for the cause-and-effect.The analysis considers multiple locations of the landslide and incorporates two types of time scales:longterm deformation on a monthly basis and short-term deformation on a daily basis. This analysis shows that the deformations of the Outang landslide are driven by both rainfall and reservoir water while its deformation varies spatiotemporally mainly due to the difference in local responses to hydrological factors. The data mining results reveal different dominant triggering factors depending on the monitoring frequency:the monthly and bi-monthly cumulative rainfall control the monthly deformation, and the 10-d cumulative rainfall and the 5-d cumulative drop of water level in the reservoir dominate the daily deformation of the landslide. It is concluded that the spatiotemporal deformation pattern and data mining rules associated with precipitation and reservoir water level have the potential to be broadly implemented for improving landslide prevention and control in the dam reservoirs and other landslideprone areas. 展开更多

Understandings of the effect of hot deformation parameters close to the practical production line on grain refinement are crucial for enhancing both the strength and toughness of future rail steels. In this work, the austenite dynamic recrystallization(DRX)behaviors of a eutectoid pearlite rail steel were studied using a thermo-mechanical simulator with hot deformation parameters frequently employed in rail production lines. The single-pass hot deformation results reveal that the prior austenite grain sizes(PAGSs)for samples with different deformation reductions decrease initially with an increase in deformation temperature. However, once the deformation temperature is beyond a certain threshold, the PAGSs start to increase. It can be attributed to the rise in DRX volume fraction and the increase of DRX grain with deformation temperature,respectively.Three-pass hot deformation results show that the accumulated strain generated in the first and second deformation passes can increase the extent of DRX.In the case of complete DRX,PAGS is predominantly determined by the deformation temperature of the final pass.It suggests a strategic approach during industrial production where part of the deformation reduction in low temperature range can be shifted to the medium temperature range to release rolling mill loads. 展开更多

Heavy components of low-alloy high-strength(LAHS) steels are generally formed by multi-pass forging. It is necessary to explore the flow characteristics and hot workability of LAHS steels during the multi-pass forging process, which is beneficial to the formulation of actual processing parameters. In the study, the multi-pass hot compression experiments of a typical LAHS steel are carried out at a wide range of deformation temperatures and strain rates. It is found that the work hardening rate of the experimental material depends on deformation parameters and deformation passes, which is ascribed to the impacts of static and dynamic softening behaviors. A new model is established to describe the flow characteristics at various deformation passes. Compared to the classical Arrhenius model and modified Zerilli and Armstrong model, the newly proposed model shows higher prediction accuracy with a confidence level of 0.98565. Furthermore, the connection between power dissipation efficiency(PDE) and deformation parameters is revealed by analyzing the microstructures. The PDE cannot be utilized to reflect the efficiency of energy dissipation for microstructure evolution during the entire deformation process, but only to assess the efficiency of energy dissipation for microstructure evolution in a specific deformation parameter state. As a result, an integrated processing map is proposed to better study the hot workability of the LAHS steel, which considers the effects of instability factor(IF), PDE, and distribution and size of grains. The optimized processing parameters for the multi-pass deformation process are the deformation parameters of 1223–1318 K and 0.01–0.08 s^(-1). Complete dynamic recrystallization occurs within the optimized processing parameters with an average grain size of 18.36–42.3 μm. This study will guide the optimization of the forging process of heavy components. 展开更多

The safe and efficient development of natural gas hydrate requires a deep understanding of the deformation behaviors of reservoirs. In this study,a series of triaxial shearing tests are carried out to investigate the deformation properties of hydrate-bearing sediments.Variations of volumetric and lateral strains versus hydrate saturation are analyzed comprehensively. Results indicate that the sediments with high hydrate saturation show dilative behaviors, which lead to strain-softening characteristics during shearing. The volumetric strain curves have a tendency to transform gradually from dilatation to compression with the increase in effective confining pressure. An easy prediction model is proposed to describe the relationship between volumetric and axial strains. The model coefficientβis the key dominating factor for the shape of volumetric strain curves and can be determined by the hydrate saturation and stress state. Moreover,a modified model is established for the calculation of lateral strain. The corresponding determination method is provided for the easy estimation of model coefficients for medium sand sediments containing hydrate. This study provides a theoretical and experimental reference for deformation estimation in natural gas hydrate development. 展开更多

Hot deformation is a commonly employed processing technique to enhance the ductility and workability of Mg alloy. However, the hot deformation of Mg alloy is highly sensitive to factors such as temperature, strain rate, and strain, leading to complex flow behavior and an exceptionally narrow processing window for Mg alloy. To overcome the shortcomings of the conventional Arrhenius-type(AT)model,this study developed machine learning-based Arrhenius-type(ML-AT)models by combining the genetic algorithm(GA),particle swarm optimization(PSO),and artificial neural network(ANN).Results indicated that when describing the flow behavior of the AQ80 alloy, the PSO-ANN-AT model demonstrates the most prominent prediction accuracy and generalization ability among all ML-AT and AT models. Moreover,an activation energy-processing(AEP)map was established using the reconstructed flow stress and activation energy fields based on the PSO-ANN-AT model.Experimental validations revealed that this AEP map exhibits superior predictive capability for microstructure evolution compared to the one established by the traditional interpolation methods, ultimately contributing to the precise determination of the optimum processing window. These findings provide fresh insights into the accurate constitutive description and workability characterization of Mg alloy during hot deformation. 展开更多

A large number of anomalous extension twins, with low or even negative twinning Schmid factors, were found to nucleate and grow in a strongly textured Mg-1Al alloy during tensile deformation along the extruded direction. The deformation mechanisms responsible for this behaviour were investigated through in-situ electron back-scattered diffraction, grain reference orientation deviation, and slip trace-modified lattice rotation. It was found that anomalous extension twins nucleated mainly at the onset of plastic deformation at or near grain boundary triple junctions. They were associated with the severe strain incompatibility between neighbour grains as a result from the differentbasal slip-induced lattice rotations. Moreover, the anomalous twins were able to grow with the applied strain due to the continuous activation ofbasal slip in different neighbour grains, which enhanced the strain incompatibility. These results reveal the complexity of the deformation mechanisms in Mg alloys at the local level when deformed along hard orientations. 展开更多
