Muscle fatigue is common in many populations, particularly elderlies.Aging increases the incidence of muscle fatigue and delays its recovery. There is a huge debate about the current treatments for muscle fatigue, particularly in elderlies.Recently,it has been discovered that mechanoreceptors have an important role as a sensory system in sensing muscle fatigue which could enhance the body's response to muscle fatigue. The function of mechanoreceptors could be enhanced by applying either suprathreshold or subthreshold vibration.Although suprathreshold vibration improves muscle fatigue,it can cause desensitization of cutaneous receptors, discomfort, and paresthesia, which are barriers to clinical use.Subthreshold vibration has been approved as a safe and effective method of training for mechanoreceptors;however, its use and effectiveness in muscle fatigue have never been tested or explained.Possible physiological effects of subthreshold vibration in the treatment of muscle fatigue include:(1)Enhancing the function of mechanoreceptors themselves;(2)Increasing the firing rate and function of alpha motor neurons;(3)Increasing blood flow to fatigued muscles;(4)Decreasing the rate of muscle cell death in elderlies(sarcopenia);and(5)Driving motor commands and allow better performance of muscles to decrease fatigue incidence. In conclusion, the use of subthreshold vibration could be a safe and effective treatment for muscle fatigue in elderlies. It could enhance recovery from muscle fatigue. Finally,Subthreshold Vibration is safe and effective in treating muscle fatigue in comparison to suprathreshold vibration. 展开更多

Objective: As the most common cause of cancer mortality throughout the world, lung cancer has drawn people's attention on how to reduce the risk with chemopreventive ways. Many epidemiological studies have shown inconsistent effects of statins on lung cancer, but some observational studies have showed that statins had protective effect on lung cancer among elderly people. So we preformed this meta-analysis to find whether statins were chemopreventive. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science databases from inception to September, 2013. A total of 23 studies were selected, including 15 observational studies and 8 randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Both fixed and random-effects models were used to calculate pooled estimates in primary and sensitivity analyses. We used Q and 12 statistics to assess statistical heterogeneity, and evaluated publication bias by Begg's test and Egger's test. Results: No association between statins and lung cancer risk was identified either in the meta-analysis among RCTs [relative risk (RR): 0.95, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.85-1.06] or observational studies (RR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.77-1.04). We also selected 6 observational studies that all researched on elderly people. The result of meta-analysis showed that there was still no protective effect between statins and lung cancer among elderly people (RR: 1.03, 95% CI: 0.96-1.11). Conclusions: Our results did not support a protective effect of statins on the overall lung cancer risk and the lung cancer risk among elderly people. More well-designed RCTs are needed to enhance our understanding of the chemopreventive effect of statins on lung cancer. 展开更多

Aims: to analyze the presence and simultaneity of behavioral risk factors for chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) in adults and the elderly. Methods: quantitative, cross-sectional and observational study. Healthy and unhealthy eating are classified according to the frequency of food consumption. Smoking is expressed by the percentage of smokers. Harmful alcohol consumption by the percentage of individuals who consumed alcoholic beverages at least once in the last 30 days. Classification of the level of physical inactivity required to practice at least 150 minutes of physical activity. Results: the sample constituted 719 people, 535 adults and 184 elderly. The behavioral risk factor reported by most adults 499 (93.3%) and elderly 156 (84.8%) was unhealthy eating. Frequency 72% higher of smoking, four times higher of harmful alcohol consumption and 10% higher of unhealthy food among adults when compared to the elderly. The simultaneity between risk factors was 39% greater in adults than in the elderly. Discussion: risk factors evaluated in this study are key aspects of the development of NCDs. Adults have 2.43 times the chance of presenting two risk factors and 7.73 times the chance of presenting three in relation to the elderly. Conclusion: To achieve more effective and differentiated results, knowing and directing measures to control behavioral risk factors, whether isolated or concurrent, requires specific knowledge. 展开更多

The demand for better health services has resulted in the advancementof remote monitoring health, i.e., virtual nursing systems, to watch and supportthe elderly with innovative concepts such as being patient-centric, easier to use,and having smarter interactions and more accurate conclusions. While virtual nursing services attempt to provide consumers and medical practitioners with continuous medical and health monitoring services, access to allied healthcare expertssuch as nurses remains a challenge. In this research, we present Virtual NursingUsing Deep Belief Networks for Elderly People (DBN-EP), a new framework thatprovides a virtual nurse agent deployed on a senior citizen’s home, workplace, orcare centre to help manage their health condition on a continuous basis. Using thismethod, healthcare providers can assign various jobs to nurses by utilizing a general task definition mechanism, in which a task is defined as a combination ofmedical workflow, operational guidelines, and data gathered from a remotelymonitored virtual nursing system. Practitioners are in charge of DBN-EP andmake treatment decisions for patients. This allows a DBN-EP to act as a personalized full-time nurse for a client by carrying out practitioner support activitiesbased on information gathered about the client’s health. An electronic PersonalHealth Record (ePHR) system, such as a specialized web portal and mobile apps, could provide such patient information to elderly person family members and carecentres. We created a prototype system using a DBN-EP system that allows traditional client applications and healthcare provider systems to collaborate. Finally,we demonstrate how this system may benefit the elderly through a result anddebate. 展开更多

In a rural area near Munich, 52 persons aged 65 years and older were interviewed in person about health and social life circumstances. Findings: Dog owners take significantly longer walks than people who do not own dogs, averaging more than 120 minutes daily (p < 0.0001). On average, people who do not own a dog walked 38 minutes, cat owners 17 minutes. 94% of the dog owners were active daily compared to 14% of those who do not own a dog. Dog owners go to the doctor on average 5.3 times per year, people who do not own a dog 7.8 times. There was no difference between the two groups in regard to the use of medication. 80% would not move to a residential home for the elderly because of the dog, and 87% would want to take the dog along. 50% of the dog owners and 41% of those who do not own a dog had on average more than 3 contacts with other people, 6% of the dog owners and 23% of those who do not own a dog had less than one contact per day. 19% of the dog owners and 36% of those who do not own a dog would describe themselves as reserved in dealings with people. 71% stated that the dog had been very useful to help them overcome the loss of a person close to them. The W-5 [Wellbeing Five score] for dog owners was an average value of 75%, for those who did not own a dog 71%. Depression was uniformly distributed in both groups. The BMIs in both groups were similar. There was no correlation to the length of the daily walk. 展开更多

Chronic disease is an important factor that affect the health of elderly people. We analyzed the 2006 and 2010 data from the Chinese Urban and Rural Elderly Population Surveys, which are nationally representative surveys of elderly people aged 60 years and above. We found that there existed a typical power-law distribution for the rates of different numbers of chronic diseases among elderly Chinese people. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov test indicated that the result was robust, and the power exponents were approximately ?2.5. In addition, a paired t-test was conducted, which demonstrated that the rates of different numbers of chronic diseases did not have significant urban-rural differences, time differences or gender differences. 展开更多

Background: Falls in the elderly are a global public health problem with serious medical and socio-economic consequences, especially in low and middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of falls among the elderly in trauma units in Senegal. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive, prospective study from April 20, 2022 to October 30, 2022 among people aged at least 60 and admitted to the surgical emergency department of Idrissa Pouye Hospital in Dakar following a fall. Socio-demographic, clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary characteristics were collected and analyzed using Sphinx Plus 2 and Excel 2019 for Windows software. Results: Out of 730 elderly people seen during this period, 100 met the criteria, representing a prevalence of 13.69%. The average consultation time was 3.25 +/? 4 days. The average age was 73 +/? 8.43 years, with women predominating (74%). Medical expenses were mainly covered by the family (73%). Most falls occurred during the day (68%), at home (82%), especially in the bedroom (30%), with stumbling (32%) as the main mechanism. The majority of patients (86%) spent less than 30 minutes on the floor. Predisposing factors were dominated by visual disorders (56%) and precipitating factors were mainly environmental (62%). Geriatric syndromes were dominated by frailty (22%). Complications were dominated by fractures (86%), and almost half (47%) had lost their autonomy for post-fall Activities Daily Living (ADL). Prescription medication was almost systematic (98%), dominated by analgesics (98%). Surgery was indicated in 58% of patients. The average waiting time for surgery was 25.36 +/? 19 days. A death rate of 1% was recorded in the emergency department. Conclusion: Falls in the elderly are a frequent occurrence in traumatological emergencies, with etiological factors that are often multiple and interrelated, leading to significant morbidity. Raising awareness among people at risk and setting up an orthogeriatric service would help prevent falls and optimize care in the short and long term. 展开更多

Human fall detection plays a vital part in the design of sensor based alarming system, aid physical therapists not only to lessen after fall effect and also to save human life.Accurate and timely identification can offer quick medical ser-vices to the injured people and prevent from serious consequences.Several vision-based approaches have been developed by the placement of cameras in diverse everyday environments. At present times, deep learning(DL)models par-ticularly convolutional neural networks(CNNs)have gained much importance in the fall detection tasks. With this motivation, this paper presents a new vision based elderly fall event detection using deep learning(VEFED-DL)model.The proposed VEFED-DL model involves different stages of operations namely pre-processing,feature extraction, classification, and parameter optimization.Primar-ily,the digital video camera is used to capture the RGB color images and the video is extracted into a set of frames. For improving the image quality and elim-inate noise, the frames are processed in three levels namely resizing,augmenta-tion,and min–max based normalization.Besides,MobileNet model is applied as a feature extractor to derive the spatial features that exist in the preprocessed frames. In addition, the extracted spatial features are then fed into the gated recur-rent unit(GRU)to extract the temporal dependencies of the human movements. Finally,a group teaching optimization algorithm(GTOA)with stacked autoenco-der(SAE)is used as a binary classification model to determine the existence of fall or non-fall events. The GTOA is employed for the parameter optimization of the SAE model in such a way that the detection performance can be enhanced. In order to assess the fall detection performance of the presented VEFED-DL model,a set of simulations take place on the UR fall detection dataset and multi-ple cameras fall dataset. The experimental outcomes highlighted the superior per-formance of the presented method over the recent methods. 展开更多

Objective To determine the dietary zinc absorption in a Chinese elderly population and provide the basic data for the setting of zinc (Zn) recommended nutrient intakes (RNI) for Chinese elderly people. Methods A total of 24 elderly people were recruited for this study and were administered oral doses of 3 mg 67Zn and 1.2 mg dysprosium on the fourth day. The primary macronutrients, energy, and phytic acid in the representative diet were examined based on the Chinese National Standard Methods. Fecal samples were collected during the experimenta and dysprosium content. period and analyzed for zinc content, 67Zn isotope ratio, Results The mean (± SD) zinc intake from the representative Chinese diet was 10.6 ± 1.5 mg/d. The phytic acid-to-zinc molar ratio in the diet was 6.4. The absorption rate of 67Zn was 27.9% ±9.2%. The RNI of zinc, which were calculated by the absorption rate in elderly men and women, were 10.4 and 9.2 mg/d, respectively. Conclusion This study got the dietary Zn absorption in a Chinese elderly population. We found that Zn absorption was higher in elderly men than in elderly women. The current RNI in elderly female is lower than our finding, which indicates that more attention is needed regarding elderly females' zinc status and health. 展开更多

With the steady increase of older people in society, a progressively greater number of patients belonging to the geriatric group need surgical treatment. Since elderly patients with reduced physiological reserve and organ failure often have chronic diseases, geriatric syndrome, and other clinical problems, the perioperative nursing of elderly patients is more complicated. Therefore, we need to comprehensively consider clinical issues, such as patients’ preoperative status, surgical risks, and postoperative quality of life and life expectancy, and conduct comprehensive evaluations and holistic, individualized, and continuous nursing and therapy through the participation of interdisciplinary teams to achieve better curative effects. Here, the perioperative nursing of elderly patients is reviewed, including preoperative evaluation and nursing, intraoperative management, and postoperative nursing. 展开更多

Objective:This study aimed to revise the Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire(Elderly Edition)(CCMQ-EE),as well as evaluate its reliability and validity. The objective was to provide a more accurate Chinese medicine constitution identification tool for geriatric health management and help further research on the relationship between geriatric diseases and constitution type, etc. Methods:The Delphi method and a cross-sectional survey of the elderly population were used. From April to October 2021,experts in different fields were invited to participate in the questionnaire, and items were revised through the experts'ratings and feedback. From December 2021 to February 2022,the revised CCMQ-EE was validated in the elderly population. Results:The coefficients of variation of rationality and importance scores decreased to less than 0.25 in the third round of Delphi. The Kendall coordination coefficients of rationality and importance in the third round were 0.15 and 0.17(P=.031 and P=.007,respectively).The revised CCMQ-EE was established with 34 items. The factor loadings of subscales were between 0.39 and 0.92,and the fitting effects of other subscales were acceptable, except for the inherited special constitution. The Cronbach alpha and test-retest reliability coefficients of each subscale ranged from 0.65 to 0.83,and 0.66 to 0.96,respectively.The composite reliability and average variance extraction were between 0.66 and 0.84,and between 0.32 and 0.57,respectively.The reliability and validity of the revised CCMQ-EE were acceptable or satisfactory. Conclusion:The revised CCMQ-EE was developed through a three-round Delphi process and internal team discussion. After the verification in the elderly in Beijing area, its measurement performance was good. The updated questionnaire can probably replace the initial version to better promote health management and help healthy aging by identifying the constitution type of the elderly. 展开更多
