With betatron oscillation characteristics of the electron beam and ion channel effect taken into account,dispersion characteristics of electrostatic modes and TM modes for a relativistic electron beam guided by ion channel are studied.Dispersion relations are derived and solved numerically to investigate the dependence of the dispersion characteristics for electrostatic modes and TM modes on the betatron oscillation frequency and the ratio of the relativistic electron beam radius to the waveguide radius.The effects of the boundary current on the dispersion characteristic of the TM modes and the interaction between the betatron modes and TM modes are analyzed.When considering the boundary current,for a strong ion channel,a new low-frequency branch of the TM modes arises and the interaction frequency between the betatron modes and the TM01modes is increased with the same parameters. 展开更多

Taking into account the randomicity of collision positions and the arbitrary encoding of data in channel, the influences of different dispersion management on collision-induced timing jitter in a filtered wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) soliton system are obtained statistically and numerically by applying a set of coupled ordinary differential equations which are derived through variational procedure. The optimal dispersion managements which can greatly reduce the collision-induced timing jitter are found. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme of high-Q microwave photonic filter (MPF) using the techniques of self-phase modulation (SPM) spectrum broadening and third-order dispersion (TOD) compensation. The optical pulses from a mode-locking laser are spectrally broadened by the SPM in the highly nonlinear fiber. A wideband optical frequency comb with 365 spectral lines within 10-dB power variation from the highest spectral power is obtained. By applying a cubic phase modulation via a waveshaper, the effect of TOD which broadens the MPF passband is eliminated. The final implemented MPF has a Q-value as high as 296 and a tuning range of 700 MHz. 展开更多

We propose a 1st and 2nd order polarization mode dispersion emulator (PMDE) with one variable differential group delay (DGD) clement using birefringence crystals and four polarization controllers (PCs). Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the output 1st and 2nd order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) generated by the PMDE consists with statistic theory. Compared with former PMDEs, this design is tunable, lower-cost, and more integrated for fabrication, which shows response time of 150μs, response frequency of 3.8 kHz, working wavelength of 1550 nm, total power consumption of less than 3 W, working range of 0 84 ps and 0 3600 ps^2 for 1st and 2nd order PMD emulation, respectively. Also, it is programmable and can be controlled by either singlechip or computer. It can be applied to study the outage probability of optical communication systems due to PMD effect and the effectiveness of PMD compensation. 展开更多

The effect of third-order dispersion on breathing localized solutions in the quintic complex GinzburgLandau (CGL) equation is investigated. It is found that even small third-order dispersion can cause dramatic changes in the behavior of the solutions, such as breathing solution asymmetrically and travelling slowly towards the right for the positive third-order dispersion. A little larger third-order dispersion causes the solution breathing only on one side and the other side keeping the soliton profile. For the negative dispersion, the same results can be obtained except for the change of the traveling direction. Otherwise, we analyzed the interaction of two breathing solitons and found a simple method to inhibit this interaction. 展开更多

Experimental results demonstrate that the band gap of colloidal suspension crystal changes with both the thickness of crystal and the dispersity of micro-spheres. As the thickness decreases, a red shift of band gap is observed, and there is a maximum of red shift. The values of the maximum red shifts are dependent on the standard deviations of micro-spheres. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculation. As the colloidal suspension crystal is assembled from micro-spheres with a standard deviation of 8.4% in a thick cell, an incident angles independent broadband is observed, which is explained as an amorphous structure. More than 45-dB extinction-ratio multiwavelength output from 1527.76 to 1566.86 nm with 100-GHz channel spacing and 2.1-dB power ripple has been achieved by carefully controlling the individual powers of three pump lasers. 展开更多

We study an electronic compensator (EC) as a receiver for a 100-Gb/s polarization division multiplexing coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (PDM-CO-OFDM) system without optical dispersion compensation.EC,including electrical dispersion compensation (EDC),least squares channel estimation and compensation (LSCEC),and phase compensation (PC),is used to compensate for chromatic dispersion (CD),phase noise,polarization mode dispersion (PMD),and channel impairments,respectively.Simulations show that EC is highly effective in compensating for those impairments and that the performance is close to the theoretical limitation of optical signal-to-noise rate (OSNR),CD,and PMD.Its robustness against those transmission impairments and fiber nonlinearity are also systematically studied. 展开更多

Bit error rate of the degraded signal and the synchronously modulated signal under the differential group delay (DGD) values of 10, 20, 34, and 70 ps was measured and compared. The experimental results showed that in-line synchronous modulation is useful to mitigate the signal quality degeneration induced by PMD. 1-dB power penalty reduction was obtained even when the PMD was as high as 70% of the bit interval. A 40-Gb/s optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) return-to-zero (RZ) transmission experiments including a dynamic polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation was reported. The dynamic PMD compensator is made up of two-stage four degrees of freedom (DOF). The first stage adopts polarization controller and fixed time-delayed line. The second stage is variable differential group delay (DGD) element. The PMD monitoring technique is based on degree of polarization (DOP) as error signal. A novel practical adaptive optimization algorithm was introduced in dynamic adaptive PMD compensation. The experimental results show that the performance of the PMD compensator is excellent for 40-Gb/s RZ transmission systems with the large DGD. With this compensator, a significant improvement of system performance can be achieved in the eye pattern of a received signal. The first-order compensating ability of the compensator is greater than 30 ps. The second-order compensating ability is greater than 200 ps2. The first-order optimum compensating time is within 10 ms. The second-order optimum compensating time is within 24 ms. 展开更多

We studied the transmission performance of metro networks employing cascaded thin-film filters (TFFs) for three modulation formats including non-return-to-zero (NRZ), duobinary, and carrier-suppressed RZ (CSRZ). The effects caused by TFFs' dispersion and passband characteristics are investigated for 10- and 40-Gb/s signals, respectively. Simulation results show that the penalty resulted from dispersion can be partially compensated by the passband effects of the cascaded filters. CSRZ is shown to be a preferred format compared with NRZ and duobinary primarily originating from its good back-to-back performance. 展开更多

A broadband continuum generation is reported in a novel multicore microstructured optical fiber (MOF) where irregular air holes are randomly distributed in cladding. By launching ultrashort light pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser into a 190-mm-long fiber of this type, we have observed a group of continua generated from different cores, each with distinct color. 20-dB bandwidth of the broadest continuum is 1260 nm with an average power of 143 mW. The result confirms that the multicore MOF can be fabricated, with different dispersion profiles tailored for specific supercontinuum (SC) generation towards practical applications. 展开更多

Experimental results show that in a transmission of over 10-km SSMF and 1.3-m wireless link, bit rate reaches up to 5 Gb/s and bit error rate (BER) is less than 10-4 . The main limiting factor in such radio-over-fiber (ROF) systems is intersymbol interferences caused by the so-called walk-off effect when BER is below 10 8 . In addition, a transmission of over 20-km SSMF without chromatic dispersion compensation is briefly investigated. For a BER of 10 8 , the optical penalty is 2 dB. 展开更多

Experimental research of simultaneous tunable chromatic dispersion (CD) and adaptive polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensations in optical fiber communication system was reported. Two different nonlinearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings fabricated through the equivalent chirp technology were adopted in the experiment. One of the gratings was used as CD compensator, with a tunable dispersion range from 300 to 600 ps/nm. The other made of photosensitive polarization maintaining fiber was used as a tunable delay line of PMD compensator, which provided a varying amount of differential group delay (DGD) from 40 to 110 ps. Our experiment was operated at 10-Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) system and the results showed that the eye pattern recovery is excellent after both PMD and CD are compensated. Especially, the power penalty at a bit error rate (BER) of 10-9 is about 1 dB. 展开更多
