This paper deals with the analysis of the agony of Catherine, the character in Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. In this paper, the novel will be analyzed from the angle of Catherine's splitting character between her wild nature and her civilized consciousness. The paper will focus on how the split becomes the cause of her contradictions and her agonizing love for the two men — Heathcliff and Edgar. It is contended that Catherine's agony is caused exactly by each of the two sides of her character. 展开更多

In the poems created by the renowned American poet Emily Dickinson, those related to nature constitute a considerable proportion. However,Dickinson’s attitude toward nature is,in fact, contradictory. On the one hand,Dickinson perceives nature as gentle and kind, akin to a mother.Nature is regarded as“heaven”and embodies harmony. On the other hand, nature possesses its own operational principles and harbors inherent cruelty.According to Dickinson, humans should refrain from excessive interference in the natural order. This article attempts to analyze the similarities in attitude towards nature between Dickinson’s poetry and Taoist philosophy. 展开更多

Despite being unnoticed women at the time,Emily Dickinson and Yu Xiuhua, two female poets of different generations and countries, their works shook the poetry world in a powerful way.Trapped in a small place in their lives, their poems express the same desire for love and the world.Through many metamorphic imagery, their poems transcend themselves from their small bodies, small rooms, and small villages to a vast spiritual world.Such kind of transformation helps the poets integrate poetry into their lives, break the“double bind”for female poets, and express their repressed love and self-assertion. 展开更多
