Different factors affecting the efficiency of the orifice energy dissipator were investigated based on a series of theoretical analyses and numerical simulations. The main factors investigated by dimension analysis were identified, including the Reynolds number (Re), the ratio of the orifice diameter to the inner diameter of the pipe ( did ), and the ratio of distances between orifices to the inner diameter of the pipe ( LID ). Then, numerical simulations were conducted with a k-ε two-equation turbulence model. The calculation results show the following: Hydraulic characteristics change dramatically as flow passes through the orifice, with abruptly increasing velocity and turbulent energy, and decreasing pressure. The turbulent energy appears to be low in the middle and high near the pipe wall. For the energy dissipation setup with only one orifice, when Re is smaller than 105, the orifice energy dissipation coefficient K increases rapidly with the increase of Re. When Re is larger than l05, K gradually stabilizes. As diD increases, K and the length of the recirculation region L1 show similar variation patterns, which inversely vary with diD. The function curves can be approximated as straight lines. For the energy dissipation model with two orifices, because of different incoming flows at different orifices, the energy dissipation coefficient of the second orifice (K2) is smaller than that of the first. If LID is less than 5, the K value of the LID model, depending on the variation of/(2, increases with the spacing between two orifices L, and an orifice cannot fulfill its energy dissipation function. If LID is greater than 5, K2 tends to be steady; thus, the K value of the LID model gradually stabilizes. Then, the flow fully develops, and L has almost no impact on the value of K. 展开更多

The pseudo-viscous frictional energy dissipator(PVFED) is a new energy dissipator. This dissipator can be widely used in engineering for not only the friction is in direct ratio to velocity, but also the problem of viscous energy dissipator mucilage easily leaked has been overcome. The problem of how to get response of the PVFED sys- tem need to be solved before this dissipator can be used widely in engineering. The response calculation methods of the PVFED system on sina load was researched. Wilson-θ,Newmark-β and a precise integration algorithm was used separately to solve the system response and the calculation result in a different time step was compared. It was found from comparison that three calculation results were almost equivalent in a small time step. Calculation precision of Newmark-β and Wilson-θ was reduced and high calculation precision of a precise integration algorithm was kept in a large time step. The results show that it is an effective way to solve the response of a PVFED system by a precise integration method. 展开更多

Dilatancy is a fundamental volumetric growth behavior observed during loading and serves as a key index to comprehending the intricate nonlinear behavior and constitutive equation structure of rock. This study focuses on Jinping marble obtained from the Jinping Underground Laboratory in China at a depth of 2400 m.Various uniaxial and triaxial tests at different strain rates, along with constant confining pressure tests and reduced confining pressure tests under different confining pressures were conducted to analyze the mechanical response and dilatancy characteristics of the marble under four stress paths.Subsequently,a new empirical dilatancy coefficient is proposed based on the energy dissipation method. The results show that brittle failure characteristics of marble under uniaxial compression are more obvious with the strain rate increasing, and plastic failure characteristics of marble under triaxial compression are gradually strengthened.Furthermore, compared to the constant confining pressure, the volume expansion is relatively lower under unloading condition. The energy dissipation is closely linked to the process of dilatancy, with a rapid increase of dissipated energy coinciding with the beginning of dilatancy.A new empirical dilatancy coefficient is defined according to the change trend of energy dissipation rate curve,of which change trend is consistent with the actual dilatancy response in marble under different stress paths. The existing empirical and theoretical dilatancy models are analyzed, which shows that the empirical dilatancy coefficient based on the energy background is more universal. 展开更多

Structural instability in underground engineering, especially in coal-rock structures, poses significant safety risks. Thus, the development of an accurate monitoring method for the health of coal-rock bodies is crucial. The focus of this work is on understanding energy evolution patterns in coal-rock bodies under complex conditions by using shear, splitting, and uniaxial compression tests. We examine the changes in energy parameters during various loading stages and the effects of various failure modes, resulting in an innovative energy dissipation-based health evaluation technique for coal.Key results show that coal bodies go through transitions between strain hardening and softening mechanisms during loading, indicated by fluctuations in elastic energy and dissipation energy density. For tensile failure, the energy profile of coal shows a pattern of “high dissipation and low accumulation” before peak stress. On the other hand, shear failure is described by “high accumulation and low dissipation” in energy trends.Different failure modes correlate with an accelerated increase in the dissipation energy before destabilization, and a significant positive correlation is present between the energy dissipation rate and the stress state of the coal samples.A novel mathematical and statistical approach is developed, establishing a dissipation energy anomaly index,W,which categorizes the structural health of coal into different danger levels. This method provides a quantitative standard for early warning systems and is adaptable for monitoring structural health in complex underground engineering environments, contributing to the development of structural health monitoring technology. 展开更多

Hydraulic fracturing is a mature and effectivemethod for deep oil and gas production, which provides a foundation for deep oil and gas production. One of the key aspects of implementing hydraulic fracturing technology lies in understanding mechanics response characteristics of rocks in deep reservoirs under complex stress conditions. In this work, based on outcrop core samples,high-stress triaxial compression tests were designed to simulate the rock mechanics behavior of deep reservoirs in Bozhong Sag.Additionally, this study analyzes the deformation and damage law for rock under different stress conditions.Wherein, with a particular focus on combining energy dissipation theory to further understand damage law for deep reservoirs. The experimental results show that regardless of stress conditions, the process of deformation/failure of deep-seated reservoirs goes through five stages:Fracture compaction, newfracture formation, stable fracture expansion, unstable fracture expansion, and post-peak residual deformation.Under different stress conditions, the energy change laws of specimens are similar. The energy dissipation process of rocks corresponds closely to the trend of deformation-failure curve, then displays distinctive stage characteristics.Wherein,in stage of rock fracture compaction, the input energy curve is approximately coincident with the elastic strain energy curve, while the dissipation energy curve remains near zero. With the increase of strain, the growth rate of elastic strain energy increases gradually, but with the deformation entering the crack propagation stage, the growth rate of elastic strain energy slows down and the dissipation energy increases gradually. Finally,in the post-peak stage, rock fracture releases a lot of energy, which leads to the sharp decline of elastic strain energy curve. In addition, the introduction of damage variable D quantifies the analysis of the extent of failure for rocks.During the process of increasing strain, rock damage exhibits nonlinear growth with increasing stress. 展开更多

When water flows through a multiple-orifice energy disspator, flow vibration and cavitation may become very important problems. A new kind of the energy dissipator has recieved much attention because of its effectiveness in energy dissipation. In this paper numerical simulations of turbulent flows in a dissipator were presented. The flow was considered to be an asymmetric two-dimensional steady flow. K-Ε turbulent model was used and solution procedure was described. The calculation was performed with different flow conditions. Calculated results of the flow field are compared with experiments. The results demonstrate that turbulent flow through dissipator can be predicted. 展开更多

Layered backfill is commonly used in mining operations, and its mechanical behavior is strongly influenced by delamination parameters. In this study,13 specimens with different numbers of delamination and delamination angle were prepared to investigate the anisotropic mechanical behavior, energy dissipation characteristics and crack development of backfill.P-wave velocity, uniaxial compression, scanning electron microscope(SEM),and acoustic emission(AE)experiments were conducted. The results indicate that:(1)The P-wave velocity has linear and elliptical relationships with the number of delamination surface and delamination angle, respectively;the strength, delamination parameters and P-wave velocity show a high degree of coincidence in terms of their function relationship, which can realize the rapid prediction of strength.(2)The microstructure of the delaminated surface is looser than that of the matrix, leading to a decrease in strength and an increase at the pore-fissure compaction stage. The number and angle of delamination increase linearly with the anisotropy coefficient.(3)The energy evolution in angle-cut backfill can be divided into four stages, with a decrease in the proportion of elastic energy at the initiation stress and peak stress with increasing number of delamination planes and delamination angle.(4)Crack development increases with the number of delamination surface and delamination angle, resulting in a decrease in energy dissipation coefficient and peak AE energy. These findings provide valuable insights for the design of filling materials and processes in mining operations. 展开更多

Viscoelastic damper is an effective passive damping device, which can reduce the seismic response of the structure by increasing the damping and dissipating the vibration energy of structures. It has a wide application prospect in actual structural vibration control because of simple device and economical material. In view of the poor seismic behaviors of assembled frame structure connections, various energy dissipation devices are proposed to improve the seismic performance. The finite element numerical analysis method is adopted to analyze relevant energy dissipation structural parameters. The response spectrum of a 7-story assembled frame structure combined the ordinary steel support, ordinary viscoelastic damper, and viscoelastic damper with displacement amplification device is analyzed. The analysis results show that the mechanical behavior of assembled frame structure with ordinary steel supports are not significantly different from those without energy dissipation devices. The assembled frame structure with viscoelastic damper has better seismic performance and energy dissipation, especially for the viscoelastic damper with displacement amplification devices. The maximum value of inter-story displacement angle decreases by 32.24%;the maximum floor displacement decreases by 31.91%,and the base shear decreases by 13.62%compared with the assembled frame structures without energy dissipation devices. The results show that the seismic fortification ability of the structure is significantly improved, and the overall structure is more uniformly stressed. The damping structure with viscoelastic damper mainly reduces the dynamic response of the structure by increasing the damping coefficient, rather than by changing the natural vibration period of the structure. This paper provides an effective theoretical basis and reference for improving the energy dissipation system and the seismic performance of assembled frame structures. 展开更多

This paper presents the results from unidirectional shaking table tests of two reduced scale steel models of a building frame, with one and two floors, respectively. These frames incorporate friction dissipators at every floor. The inputs are sine-dwells and artificial and registered earthquakes. This study is part of a larger research project aiming to assess the seismic efficiency of friction dissipators by means of an integrated numerical and experimental approach. Inside this framework, the main objectives of these experiments are to: (i) collect a wide range of results to calibrate a numerical model derived within the project, (ii) clarify some of the most controversial issues about friction dissipators (including behavior for inputs containing pulses, capacity to reduce resonance peaks, introduction of high frequencies in the response, and self- generated eccentricities), (iii) better understand their dynamic behavior, (iv) provide insight on the feasibility and reliability of using simple friction dissipators for seismic protection of building structures and (v) characterize the hysteretic behavior of these devices. Most of these objectives are satisfactorily reached and relevant conclusions are stated. 展开更多

The effect of porosity on surface wave scattering by a vertical porous barrier over a rectangular trench is studied here under the assumption of linearized theory of water waves. The fluid region is divided into four subregions depending on the position of the barrier and the trench.Using the Havelock’s expansion of water wave potential in different regions along with suitable matching conditions at the interface of different regions, the problem is formulated in terms of three integral equations.Considering the edge conditions at the submerged end of the barrier and at the edges of the trench, these integral equations are solved using multi-term Galerkin approximation technique taking orthogonal Chebyshev’s polynomials and ultra-spherical Gegenbauer polynomial as its basis function and also simple polynomial as basis function.Using the solutions of the integral equations, the reflection coefficient, transmission coefficient, energy dissipation coefficient and horizontal wave force are determined and depicted graphically. It was observed that the rate of convergence of the Galerkin method in computing the reflection coefficient, considering special functions as basis function is more than the simple polynomial as basis function. The change of porous parameter of the barrier and variation of trench width and height significantly contribute to the change in the scattering coefficients and the hydrodynamic force. The present results are likely to play a crucial role in the analysis of surface wave propagation in oceans involving porous barrier over submarine trench. 展开更多

Granular debris plays a significant role in determining damming deposit characteristics. An indepth understanding of how variations in grain size distribution(GSD) and geometric configurations impact the behavior of granular debris during the occurrence of granular debris is essential for precise assessment and effective mitigation of landslide hazards in mountainous terrains. This research aims to investigate the impact of GSD and geometric configurations on sliding and damming properties through laboratory experiments. The geometric configurations were categorized into three categories based on the spatial distribution of maximum volume: located at the front(Type Ⅰ), middle(Type Ⅱ), and rear(Type Ⅲ) of the granular debris. Our experimental findings highlight that the sliding and damming processes primarily depend on the interaction among the geometric configuration, grain size, and GSD in granular debris. Different sliding and damming mechanisms across various geometric configurations induce variability in motion parameters and deposition patterns. For Type Ⅰ configurations, the front debris functions as the critical and primary driving component, with energy dissipation primarily occurring through inter-grain interactions. In contrast, Type Ⅱ configurations feature the middle debris as the dominant driving component, experiencing hindrance from the front debris and propulsion from the rear, leading to complex alterations in sliding motion. Here, energy dissipation arises from a combination of inter-grain and grain-substrate interactions. Lastly, in Type Ⅲ configurations, both the middle and rear debris serve as the main driving components, with the rear sliding debris impeded by the front. In this case, energy dissipation predominantly results from grainsubstrate interaction. Moreover, we have quantitatively demonstrated that the inverse grading in damming deposits, where coarse grain moves upward and fine grain moves downward, is primarily caused by grain sorting due to collisions among the grains and between the grain and the base. The impact of grain on the horizontal channel further aids grain sorting and contributes to inverse grading. The proposed classification of three geometric configurations in our study enhances the understanding of damming properties from the view of mechanism, which provides valuable insights for related study about damming granular debris. 展开更多

The intrinsic relationships between energy dissipation, energy release, strength and abrupt structural failure are key to understanding the evolution of deformational processes in rocks.Theoretical and experimental studies confirm that energy plays an important role in rock deformation and failure.Dissipated energy from external forces produces damage and irreversible deformation within rock and decreases rock strength over time.Structural failure of rocks is caused by an abrupt release of strain energy that manifests as a catastrophic breakdown of the rock under certain conditions. The strain energy released in the rock volume plays a pivotal role in generating this abrupt structural failure in the rocks. In this paper,we propose criteria governing(1) the deterioration of rock strength based on energy dissipation and(2) the abrupt structural failure of rocks based on energy release. The critical stresses at the time of abrupt structural failure under various stress states can be determined by these criteria. As an example, the criteria have been used to analyze the failure conditions of surrounding rock of a circular tunnel. 展开更多

It is pretty challenging and difficult to quantitatively evaluate the intensity of dynamic disasters in deep mining engineering.Based on the uniaxial loading-unloading experiments for five types of rocks, this paper investigated the energy evolution characteristics, and identified the damage and crack propagation thresholds. Also, the fragment size distributions of the rocks after failure were analyzed. The energy release rate(Ge)and energy dissipation rate(Gd)were then proposed to describe the change of energies per unit volume and per unit strain. Results demonstrated that the more brittle rocks had the shorter stage of unstable crack growth and the lower induced damage at crack damage thresholds. The evolution characteristics of the strain energy rates can be easily identified by the crack propagation thresholds. The failure intensity index(FId),which equals to the values of Ge/Gd at the failure point, was further put forth. It can account for the brittleness of the rocks, the intensity of rock failure as well as the degree of rock fragmentation. It was revealed that a higher FId corresponded to a lower fractal dimension and stronger dynamic failure. 展开更多

Based on the concept of structural passive control,a new type of slit shear wall, with improved seismic performance when compared to an ordinary solid shear wall, was proposed by the authors in 1996.The idea has been verified by a series of pseudo-static and dynamic tests. In this paper a macro numerical model is developed for the wall element and the energy dissipation device. Then, nonlinear time history analysis is carried out for a 10-story slit shear wall model tested on a shaking table.Furthermore, the seismic input energy and the individual energy dissipated by the components are calculated by a method based on Newmark-β assumptions for this shear wall model, and the advantages of this shear wall are further demonstrated by the calculation results from the viewpoint of energy. Finally, according to the seismic damage criterion on the basis of plastic accumulative energy and maximum response, the optimal analysis is carried out to select design parameters for the energy dissipation device. 展开更多

In this paper, a steel-concrete multi-energy dissipation composite shear wall, comprised of steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) columns, steel plate (SP) deep beams, a concrete wall and energy dissipation strips, is proposed. In order to study the multi-energy dissipation behavior and restorability after an earthquake, two stages of low cyclic loading tests were carded out on ten test specimens. In the first stage, test on five specimens with different number of SP deep beams was carried out, and the test lasted until the displacement drift reached 2%. In the second stage, thin SPs were welded to both sides of the five specimens tested in the first stage, and the same test was carried out on the repaired specimens (designated as new specimens). The load-bearing capacity, stiffness, ductility, hysteretic behavior and failure characteristics were analyzed for both stages and the results are discussed herein. Extrapolating from these results, strength calculation models and formulas are proposed herein and simulations using ABAQUS carried out, they show good agreement with the test results. The study demonstrates that SRC columns, SP deep beams, concrete wall and energy dissipation strips cooperate well and play an important role in energy dissipation. In addition, this study shows that the shear wall has good recoverability after an earthquake, and that the welding of thin SP's to repair a deformed wall is a practicable technique. 展开更多

The mechanical behaviors and energy dissipation characteristics of heat-treated granite were investigated under repeated impact loading. The granite samples were firstly heat-treated at the temperature of 20℃,200℃,400℃,and 600℃,respectively.The thermal damage characteristics of these samples were then observed and measured before impact tests.Dynamic impact compression tests finally were carried out using a modified split-Hopkinson pressure bar under three impact velocities of 12 m/s,15 m/s,and 18 m/s.These test results show that the mineral composition and the main oxides of the granite do not change with these treatment temperatures. The number of microcracks and microvoids decreases in the sample after 200℃ treatment. The mechanical properties of a sample after 600℃ treatment were rapidly deteriorated under the same impact velocity. The average of peak stress is much smaller than those after 20℃,200℃ and 400℃ treatments. The heat-treated samples have an energy threshold each. When the dissipated energy of a sample under a single impact is less than this threshold, the repeated impacts hardly lead to further damage accumulation even if its total breakage energy dissipation(BED)density is large.Under the same number of repeated impacts, the cumulative BED density of a sample after 600℃ treatment is the largest and its damage evolves most quickly. The total BED density of the sample after 200℃ treatment is the highest, which implies that this sample has better resistance to repeated impact, thus having less crack initiation and growth. 展开更多

Fundamental experiments were carried out in a wave flume on internal solitary wave (ISW) of depression-type propagating over a submerged ridge. The seabed ridge included either triangular or semicircular shape - regarded as topographic obstacles. Influenced by the submarine ridge, the transmitted waves were found to always consist of a leading pulse (a solitary wave) followed by a dispersive wave train. The wave profile propagating over a triangular ridge was similar to that caused by a semicircular obstacle. Apparently, the smooth face of a semicircular ridge produced time lag of wave propagation. From experimental results available, the reduction in wave energy induced by a semicircular ridge was larger than that by a triangular one. The events of wave distortion, strong breaking, internal bolus, and stratification mixing happened in case that the crest of an ISW was great enough to interact with the topographic obstacle. The reduction in wave energy was induced by strong breaking, and it depended on the ridge height rather than the geometric shape of the ridge. 展开更多
