The Omani Technical Students’Knowledge of English for Specific Purposes(ESP)Lexis and Their Attitudes Towards Learning ESP

In Oman,research on ESP has been attracting a great deal of attention in English language education over the past decade.Nevertheless,little attention has been paid to discover the relationship between the technical students’knowledge of the ESP lexis and their attitudes towards learning ESP in the Omani technical context.Therefore,this research study was conducted to do so and to explore whether the Omani technical students’knowledge of ESP lexis is predictable and is affected by a combination of their attitudes to learning ESP,their gender,and their age.Forty-eight questionnaires were distributed among participants(24 males and 24 females)aged between 24 and 27 years old.The study confirmed the positive relation between people’s knowledge and their feelings;several recommendations were proposed.In addition,the study showed that technical students’attitude towards learning ESP is an issue that must be resolved as it negatively affects improving the students’knowledge of ESP lexes.

The Application of Task-Based Language Teaching in the Teaching of English for Special Purposes

With the deepening of higher education reform in China,higher education starts to focus more on the comprehensive training of talents,therefore many innovative teaching methods have been integrated into the higher education system,importantly,in English teaching,which is one of the important skills that modern talents should have.In the teaching of English for special purposes,the traditional teaching mode should be replaced with the task-based language teaching mode,where scientifically carry out teaching work based on the specific tasks and goals.This paper analyzed the connotation of task-based language teaching,and the significance of this teaching application in English for Special Purposes.Further,the purpose to study the application strategies of task-based language teaching in English for Special Purposes were also discussed in this paper.

ESP视域下适合医学英语的教学模式在留学生教育中的应用

目的探究专门用途英语(English for special purpose,ESP)视域下适合医学英语的教学模式在留学生教育中的应用。方法选择2021年10月—2022年10月南京医科大学国际教育学院的六年制临床医学专业本科留学生60名为研究对象,按班级将60名留学生分为对照组(30名)和观察组(30名),对照组采用传统教学,观察组采用ESP视域下适合医学英语的教学模式。比较2组留学生的综合成绩、文献检索和综述能力及留学生对教材效果评价、满意度。结果观察组留学生综合成绩为(82.56±5.25)分,高于对照组的(74.41±6.58)分,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05),观察组及格与优秀占比分别是56.67%(17/30)、43.33%(13/30),而对照组的是76.67%(23/30)、16.67%(5/30),且对照组不及格占比6.67%(2/30);观察组对留学生在专业词汇的准确应用、综述内容的科学性、语法评分方面的评价及留学生对教材效果的评价均高于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P<0.001);观察组在教学方式、课程参与度方面的满意度高于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05),而在语言能力培养、独立思考、师生互动及自学能力方面的满意度与对照组比较差异无统计学意义(P>0.05)。结论ESP视域下适合医学英语的教学模式在留学生教育中的应用效果较好,能有效提高留学生文献检索和综述能力,改善对教材效果的评价,提高对教学方式、课程参与度等方面的满意度。

基于ESP理念的通用学术英语在大学英语教学中的构建

通用学术英语(EGAP)作为专门用途英语(ESP)的分支,不局限于特定学科或职业,主要解决学术英语中的共性问题,培养学生一般性的学术英语能力。文章以ESP教学理念为基础,探索将通用学术英语课程作为从通用大学英语到专业英语的衔接性课程,构建于大学英语课程体系中。提出将通用大学英语与通用学术英语相互融合互为补充、确立以需求分析为基础的通用学术英语教学目标和教学内容、设计以学生为中心的教学活动和加强通用学术英语课程师资队伍建设等作为通用学术英语在大学英语教学中的构建原则,旨在为转型期的大学英语教学提供理论和实践依据以及可借鉴的经验。

Teacher＇s role in teaching English for Medical Purposes （EMP）

This paper has addressed key notions about ESP and examined issues in ESP curriculum design. The content of the paper was determined by a need identified based on author＇s professional experience as an EMP instructor designing and delivering the content-based language lessons--language preparation for Doctoral Degree Applicants in medicine. The author believes that in English class teachers should adopt a student-centered approach, have some knowledge of the special subjects and choose appropriate materials that fit all medical students. This approach has achieved satisfactory result in helping students know about the latest breakthroughs in biomedical fields, communicate with colleagues of other countries and contribute to foreign medical journals.

Discussion on the Nature of English for Specific Purpose and ESP Teaching Methods

This paper clears up the scientific justification for the existence of ESP through the analysis of ESP's nature.The specific features of ESP teaching goals and focuses require us to adopt suitable ESP teaching methods for the completion of ESP teaching tasks.The ESP teaching method introduced here as "Contrastive Approach" is from our ESP teaching practice and will play a positive role in the ESP education to Chinese students.

Advocating the Need for Incorporating Critical Pedagogy and Critical Literacy in Teaching English for Specific Purposes

The axis tlhesis of this paper is that, today, it is ESP （English for Specific Purposes） in particular, rather than General English, that is the agent of the spread of globalization. Currently, ESP is witnessing an unprecedented spread, to a point of almost taking over the relevance and frequency of teaching of General English. Hereby, we look at the phenomenon of globalization as a social concept that demands of education that students are taught performativity, therefore just skills needed for the global economy functioning, and not education as a move towards change, refinement, and individuation of a personality. ESP is taught as a sort of socially neutral language, as it presumably deals only with the language of some specific science or profession. Relying on the relevant work of the acclaimed social theorists, it is our claim that as there is no socially and/or ideologically neutral language, and that this fact applies for ESP. It is because of this, that we hereby advocate a strong and urgent need for the application of critical pedagogy and critical literacy stances in the practice of ESP, and we give some broad directions of how that can be achieved.

A Case Study of The Course Setting of Business English of South-Central University For Nationalities

With the economic globalization and the demand of the situation, many higher universities set up business English major. However, since business English is still a new major and research field in higher education, lots of problems exist in the major construction, in which the issue of course settings is a heated one. The author believes that as for the course setting of business English that is an important branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), it should be based on the demand toward business English talents from the market and the characteristics of business English.This thesis will, based on the point view of student, further discuss the issue of business English. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the course setting of business English in China is not mature enough, which has problems involved in the content and the time arrangement. The significance of this thesis is to put forward reasonable proposals in the hope of solving the problem in the course setting of business English so that the business English graduates will be fit for the needs of the society.

Designing an EGP+ESP merging Curriculum for Technical Vocational College Students

The English curriculum in vocational colleges must stress the practical and professional characteristics.This concept should be conducted throughout the entire teaching process,but not just some of the teaching stages.By analysis of the curriculum goals and context of vocational colleges,based on theories of ESP,needs analysis,and experimental research,this article intends to prove the rationality and necessity of the curriculum pattern for non-English majors of vocational colleges by merging ESP into EGP which emphasizing communication as the basic and job orientation as the guidance.

The Use of Metaphors in Scientific Texts in English： A Proposal for Improving Reading Competence

Understanding discipline-specific texts in English is a basic requirement for science students, who must develop their content knowledge and language skills. Particularly, interesting is the fact that the language of science is characterized by the use of figurative language, which appeals to the common knowledge of the world, mainly to explain, clarify, and describe intricate concepts. Metaphors are helpful for lexicalizing new concepts and meanings or extending the meanings of pre-existing words. The analysis of tropes as a means to improve foreign language learners＇ reading competence is a rather novel teaching practice in ESP （English for Specific Purposes）, implemented at the University of Rio Cuarto, Argentina. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explain the theoretical basis for teaching and developing metaphorical competence in ESP classes as a means of providing an intellectually stimulating alternative approach, and to present some teaching ideas and activities designed to familiarize students with the use of metaphorical language in scientific discourse in order to enhance their reading competence.

Key Concepts of ESP Course Design and Suggestions for It

Since ESP was introduced into China, its development has experienced fluctuating changes while ESP education is an inevitable trend in the future. To make ESP teaching even more effective, issues on the stage of ESP course design are well worth discussing. In this essay, factors such as features of the ESP course, stages in ESP course design are suggested to take into consideration on the stage of designing ESP course. Besides, some theoretical introductions to the key concepts of ESP course design suchas needs analysis, learner-centrality, authenticity, key stages of ESP course design will be reviewed from the eyes of researchersand scholars abroad. Finally, the suggestions will be given in the process of ESP course design.

Authentic Materials＇ Implication for ESP Settings

Although the emergence of the idea dates back to 1890s by Henry Sweet, many teachers involved in foreign language teaching have encouraged and discussed that using authentic materials is beneficial during the last decade However, the use of authentic materials in learning contexts such as ESP （English for Specific Purposes） has always been a matter of controversy and as Khaniya （2006） mentioned, a larger number of teachers are starting to identify the benefits of authentic materials and the options that such materials may provide for professional English teaching settings rather than traditional intensive ESL （English as a Second Language）. The present paper will presnet a short review of authentic materials while comparing them with textbook-based materials. Moreover, it will focus on the nature and quality features of authentic materials and particularly the motivating role these materials may play. Finally, the paper will present a list of authentic materials recommended in the literature for ESP as well as some guidelines for the selection and instruction of authentic reading materials in ESP courses.

New Approach to Teaching English for Business Communication

The paper presents new developments in teaching English for business communication to pre-experienced students It presents a short history of changes that have occurred in the teaching methodologies in Europe in the last 40 years It shreds some light on the priorities of the last decades and on the ever growing importance of students＇ needs. It stresses the changes resulting from globalization, new business opportunities and new trends in employment. The changing business environment makes it necessary to improve communicative competence. Recently, the linguistic component of ESP （English for Specific Purposes） courses for pre-experienced students has been increasingly combined with the sociolinguistic and pragmatic components which contribute greatly to good communicative competence. The new approach is much more challenging for business English teachers and requires much higher qualifications, e.g., content knowledge and business skills. In order to increase the effectiveness of ESP courses, we need teaching materials based on corpus studies that could prioritize the highest-frequency business lexis and streamline students＇ efforts. In the fiercely competitive world of today, students need to concentrate on things that are likely to help them become good business communicators

Formative Assessment in ESP Teaching:An Empirical Study

Based on analysis of learners'needs of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and in accordance with the actual college ESP teaching, the author conducted a one-term comparative exploration on the application of formative assessment for ESP teaching. The results revealed the positive effects of formative assessment on those participants'ESP learning, which can be a favorable inspiration for the further research of ESP teaching.

ESP视域下医学本科生学术英语需求分析

文章基于ESP视域下的需求分析理论,对山西医科大学的三年级本科生对学术英语课程的需求情况进行了问卷调查,共回收问卷483份。调查结果表明,医学本科生具有强烈的学术英语需求,包括阅读英文专业文献、听懂专业英文讲座、选修全英课程、用英文进行学术写作等。多数医学本科生认为英文学术读写能力非常重要,但是在词汇和学术读、说、听、写、5个方面表示有困难的学生比例均超过了一半,在用英文搜索和阅读专业文献的6个困难中,认为有困难的学生的比例也基本超过了一半。学术规范知识调查表明,医学生鉴别文献资源可靠性的能力较差,医学生合理引用文献的知识也很匮乏。随后的文本分析和课堂观察也表明,虽然学生有强烈的需求,但是对于研究范式和写作学术规范知之甚少。由于当前开设的通用大学英语课程不能满足学生的多种需求,在学习者需求分析的基础上,构建通用英语+学术英语的课程模式可能更适合普通本科院校的学生。
