In Oman,research on ESP has been attracting a great deal of attention in English language education over the past decade.Nevertheless,little attention has been paid to discover the relationship between the technical s...In Oman,research on ESP has been attracting a great deal of attention in English language education over the past decade.Nevertheless,little attention has been paid to discover the relationship between the technical students’knowledge of the ESP lexis and their attitudes towards learning ESP in the Omani technical context.Therefore,this research study was conducted to do so and to explore whether the Omani technical students’knowledge of ESP lexis is predictable and is affected by a combination of their attitudes to learning ESP,their gender,and their age.Forty-eight questionnaires were distributed among participants(24 males and 24 females)aged between 24 and 27 years old.The study confirmed the positive relation between people’s knowledge and their feelings;several recommendations were proposed.In addition,the study showed that technical students’attitude towards learning ESP is an issue that must be resolved as it negatively affects improving the students’knowledge of ESP lexes.展开更多

目的探究专门用途英语(English for special purpose,ESP)视域下适合医学英语的教学模式在留学生教育中的应用。方法选择2021年10月—2022年10月南京医科大学国际教育学院的六年制临床医学专业本科留学生60名为研究对象,按班级将60名留...目的探究专门用途英语(English for special purpose,ESP)视域下适合医学英语的教学模式在留学生教育中的应用。方法选择2021年10月—2022年10月南京医科大学国际教育学院的六年制临床医学专业本科留学生60名为研究对象,按班级将60名留学生分为对照组(30名)和观察组(30名),对照组采用传统教学,观察组采用ESP视域下适合医学英语的教学模式。比较2组留学生的综合成绩、文献检索和综述能力及留学生对教材效果评价、满意度。结果观察组留学生综合成绩为(82.56±5.25)分,高于对照组的(74.41±6.58)分,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05),观察组及格与优秀占比分别是56.67%(17/30)、43.33%(13/30),而对照组的是76.67%(23/30)、16.67%(5/30),且对照组不及格占比6.67%(2/30);观察组对留学生在专业词汇的准确应用、综述内容的科学性、语法评分方面的评价及留学生对教材效果的评价均高于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P<0.001);观察组在教学方式、课程参与度方面的满意度高于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05),而在语言能力培养、独立思考、师生互动及自学能力方面的满意度与对照组比较差异无统计学意义(P>0.05)。结论ESP视域下适合医学英语的教学模式在留学生教育中的应用效果较好,能有效提高留学生文献检索和综述能力,改善对教材效果的评价,提高对教学方式、课程参与度等方面的满意度。展开更多

The author believes that in English class teachers should adopt a student-centered approach, have some knowledge of the special subjects and choose appropriate materials that fit all medical students. Currently, ESP is witnessing an ...The axis tlhesis of this paper is that, today, it is ESP (English for Specific Purposes) in particular, rather than General English, that is the agent of the spread of globalization. Currently, ESP is witnessing an unprecedented spread, to a point of almost taking over the relevance and frequency of teaching of General English. Hereby, we look at the phenomenon of globalization as a social concept that demands of education that students are taught performativity, therefore just skills needed for the global economy functioning, and not education as a move towards change, refinement, and individuation of a personality. ESP is taught as a sort of socially neutral language, as it presumably deals only with the language of some specific science or profession. Relying on the relevant work of the acclaimed social theorists, it is our claim that as there is no socially and/or ideologically neutral language, and that this fact applies for ESP. It is because of this, that we hereby advocate a strong and urgent need for the application of critical pedagogy and critical literacy stances in the practice of ESP, and we give some broad directions of how that can be achieved.展开更多

The author believes that as for the course setting of business English that is an important branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), it should be based on the demand toward business English talents from the market and the characteristics of business English.This thesis will, based on the point view of student, further discuss the issue of business English. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the course setting of business English in China is not mature enough, which has problems involved in the content and the time arrangement. Metaphors are helpful for lexicalizing new concepts and meanings or extending the meanings of pre-existing words. The analysis of tropes as a means to improve foreign language learners' reading competence is a rather novel teaching practice in ESP (English for Specific Purposes), implemented at the University of Rio Cuarto, Argentina. It stresses the changes resulting from globalization, new business opportunities and new trends in employment. The changing business environment makes it necessary to improve communicative competence. Recently, the linguistic component of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses for pre-experienced students has been increasingly combined with the sociolinguistic and pragmatic components which contribute greatly to good communicative competence. The new approach is much more challenging for business English teachers and requires much higher qualifications, e.g., content knowledge and business skills. In order to increase the effectiveness of ESP courses, we need teaching materials based on corpus studies that could prioritize the highest-frequency business lexis and streamline students' efforts.
