On this basis, the effectiveness and rationalization of the fuzzy theory's application in the English literature teaching were confirmed from many aspects. Among them, it is mainly investigated and analyzed from the objective factors and subjective factors. Subjective aspects mainly contain students' different cognitive ability, and the diversity existed in teachers' teaching and guiding methods. Objective aspects mainly include that the literature language and literature thoughts itself have the unique ambiguity. Finally, in summing up the investigation results the author put forward the essence of English literature teaching activity and put forward the methods to improve English literature teaching.展开更多

However, normal applications of Girard's work can be problematic with this text, because reading mimetic conflict in Beowulf as focused on a single object of desire does not adequately explain the relationships between Grendel and his enemies. Normal applications of acquisitive mimesis are limited in this poem, because agent and model do not often have the same desires, and thus this paper proposes a corollary to Girard's theories: If we allow for two objects of desire in the rivalry--primary and secondary desires--we can account for the motivations of all mimetic rivals and acquisitive mimesis has a richer and more sustained application to this poem展开更多

A juxtaposition of the writers' reaction to the dynamics of gazing and the ethics of touch yields surprising results. Many women travellers have no problem to acknowledge the reciprocity of the gaze, accepting, as a matter of course, that the objects of their ethnological interest will gaze at them in return. In comparison, male travellers often exhibit unease at becoming an object of appraisal and observation. Even more interestingly, male travellers often shy away from haptic contact with members of the indigenous population, whereas many (though not all) women are more tolerant of touch and proximity. Regarded as "unwomanly" by their contemporaries, they carved out for themselves roles which allowed for a more intimate interaction with foreign ethnicities; also, they wrote in different genres--private memoirs instead of official reports. But even in their (semi) fictional writings male authors seem to imagine inter-cultural encounters in different terms from women and tend not let their protagonists enter into close bodily contact with the indigenous population.展开更多

The views on the First War are portrayed by a plurality of voices, most of which are women's, and they allow readers to think of the war experience in a more subjective but also more plural way. In this novel, voices from both sides of the First War resonate, i.e., the hegemonic side of the war--the Allies--is compared and contrasted to the subjectivity of the voices of the "others"--the Axis, although they do not necessarily work in harmony. Such innovation in point of view has, in great part, contributed to converging story and history, allowing this literary work to partake in the production of historical knowledge and cultural memory of the War.展开更多

This paper seeks to find some solution to the decline in the teaching of English literature in a Chinese context. Problems in a Chinese class are first analyzed. And then from a constructivist perspective that knowledge can be best mastered when students find their personal involvement with what they are learning, a proposal is put forward that a critical attitude and response to the literary texts are important. To introduce critical activities into class, one has first to help students overcome their 'theory anxieties' brought forth by the advanced development of critical theories. Ecocriticism as an ethical critical approach to literature does not hold a big corpus of new and academic terms, and thus is a most desirable substitute, which also cares for the current issues of ecological calamities. Sample students' reactions to ecocriticism in a Chinese class are offered.展开更多
