This paper reviews the theory of language attrition,which refers to the loss or degradation of second language skills due to lack of using the second language for a certain period of time.Although our country attaches great importance to English language teaching,most of college English majors use English far less frequently than that of Chinese in real life,which makes them easily influenced by language attrition.Therefore,it is of great significance for college English majors to improve the efficiency of English vocabulary memory from the perspective of language attrition combined with Forgetting.This thesis consists of three parts.Chapter one is an analysis the concept of language attrition and Forgetting.Chapter two describes and analyzes the existing problems in current vocabulary memory among the college English majors via a questionnaire survey.The final chapter puts forward some corresponding countermeasures to help college English majors get rid of the influence of language attrition on vocabulary learning. 展开更多

The Use of Children's Literature With University English as a Foreign Language Learners in Taiwan

This paper reports findings from a longitudinal qualitative study that investigated the use of children's literature for Taiwan Residents University English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' reading. During the course of their sophomore year, 17 students participated and each student held two to seven individual reading sessions, to which they brought a self-selected children's picture storybook or children's novel they had finished reading on their own and orally read it to the researcher. Their oral reading and the discussion of each book with the researcher were audio recorded. To gain insight into the reading progress, these oral data were categorized and analyzed in terms of mispronunciation patterns, misunderstanding of vocabulary, misinterpretation of sentence or passage, and researcher's guidance. General findings of the 17 participants were presented in three categories: (1) vocabulary acquisition, (2) common comprehension problems, and (3) common pronunciation problems. Further analysis of two motivated students who read five to seven books revealed that (1) these two EFL learners gradually developed conscious awareness of their own pronunciation and comprehension errors and (2) they progressively acquired better competence to apply the pronunciation tips and reading comprehension techniques provided by the researcher during previous sessions. These findings and corresponding implications are discussed and further research suggestions are made. 展开更多

The aim of the study was to explore non-Engish majors' actual practice of out-of class English learning activities and the relationship between out-of-class English learning and language proficiency. Data were gathered through qualitative methods by semi-structured interviews and observation with 6 non-English majors from Tianjin Foreign Studies University. Students' CET-4 scores were collected as well. Out-of-class observation was conducted with two participants who represent respectively high and low scores in CET. The results indicated that high scorers generally showed higher level of learner autonomy in out-of-class learning context. than low scorers. Most of the participants hoped to obtain more guidance and recommendations for learning materials and learning strategies so as to improve their language skills. 展开更多

The Relationship between Language Learning Strategy and the CET-6 Scores

It investigates the relationship between language learning strategy and the CET-6 scores of students majoring in English as a foreign language(EFL). Participants consists of a volunteer pool of 45 second-year English major students at Tianjin Polytechnic University. A revised version 7.0 of Oxford's(1990, pg. 293-300) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning(SILL)and the CET-6 are administered as measures of learning strategy and the CET-6 scores. An analysis of ANOVA and Multiple Correlation is conducted to examine the relationships among six types of learning strategies and scores of CET-6. Results of this analysis reveals that metacognitive strategies and affective strategies are two major language learning strategies that preferred by the participants in the English learning process. While metacognitive strategies and affective strategies preferred by the participants do not have a statistically significant correlation with the scores of CET-6. It is the memory strategies and social strategies that have a significant correlation with the scores of CET-6. 展开更多
