Based on the theory of stance in interactive linguistics and the corpus of Bridging Cultures,this paper studies the stance-taking of advanced oral English.By using a combination of quantitative and qualitative researc...Based on the theory of stance in interactive linguistics and the corpus of Bridging Cultures,this paper studies the stance-taking of advanced oral English.By using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research to sort out and analyze the advanced oral corpus,the research finding suggests that people mainly use adjectives to express positive and negative stances,followed by nouns and verbs.Among the many grammatical constructions to express stances,“sub+is+adj”is the dominant structure,followed by“adv+adj”.It mainly presents four kinds of stance-taking in advanced oral English based on Bridging Cultures teaching materials:(1)positively evaluation stance-taking;(2)positive attitude stance-taking;(3)negative evaluation stance-taking;and(4)negative attitude stance-taking.展开更多

Although research on teaching materials use has important implications for materials development,little literature examines how teachers actually use materials in the classroom.The present study,taking the theoretical...Although research on teaching materials use has important implications for materials development,little literature examines how teachers actually use materials in the classroom.The present study,taking the theoretical framework for using and evaluating Production-Oriented Approach(POA)teaching materials(Wen,2017),explores the procedure and the rationale of an experienced Chinese university EFL teacher’s use of POA teaching materials.Multiple methods were employed in data collection,including classroom observations,teacher interviews,the teacher’s lesson plans,and PowerPoints,as well as students’written and oral products.Data analysis showed that the teacher followed a three-phase process of materials use.Before class,teaching objectives were set,materials were selected,adapted,and then transformed into teaching activities.During class,the teaching activities were implemented with the materials.After class,the effectiveness of using the materials was assessed.The study revealed that the teacher played an active role in practicing the essential POA principles of“productive-objectives-determined”and“input-in-service-to-output”in the entire process of material use.展开更多

To enable the students to learn and make use of scientific knowledge better, the Special English Curriculum for MLS has been set up, which is very important to non-English-speaking students. However, there are many problems in the course of teaching, so the improved teaching quality of the curriculum is in demand. Approach: In this paper these problems are described and the corresponding advices are proposed from the perspectives of staff room, teachers and students, which are supposed to develop the curriculum for education of the medical laboratory scientists. Findings: To improve the teaching quality of the Special English Curriculum for MLS, the textbook should be appropriately selected or compiled, the novel teaching methods can be applied, and the modern multimedia teaching materials can be adopted.The teachers of the curriculum should be proficient in professional knowledge, English as well as the systematic and scientific teaching methods. The students need to have the courage and determination to overcome the difficulties when they learn the curriculum, and the students who have not did well in their lessons should learn to study by themselves. Background:According to previous studies on professional English course teaching,the evaluation of course teaching was positive,but the vast majorities focus on medical English literature reading,professional English ...Background:According to previous studies on professional English course teaching,the evaluation of course teaching was positive,but the vast majorities focus on medical English literature reading,professional English vocabulary,and professional English translation.As an alternative,the course design based on academic learning needs under the outcome-oriented education/model emphasizes the improvement of students'comprehensive ability in oral expression,literature reading,writing,and academic communication.Objectives:The objective of this study was to analyze nursing postgraduates'opinions on learning the outcome-oriented academic English course.Methods:This is a cross-sectional descriptive study.A total of 150 first-year nursing postgraduates enrolled in the“Academic Professional English for Nursing Postgraduates”course.After completing the course learning,students scanned QR codes generated by the online questionnaire and completed it anonymously within 48 h.Results:The students who participated in this course strongly believed that it“helped them strengthen their English speakability”(4.8 points),“made them more confident to participate in international academic conferences and exchanges in the future”(4.8 points),and“helped them apply English more in the nursing professional field in the future”(4.7 points).Conclusions:The implementation of outcome-oriented course teaching helps students to understand the research of foreign scholars and effectively express their own research content with English as a tool.It motivates them to continuously use English for professional and academic communication.展开更多

In this study, the author ...Textbooks material is one of the important issues that are worthy to investigate in order to enrich student＇s engagement and interaction in EFL （English as a Foreign Language） classrooms. In this study, the author argues that textbooks materials used in academic institutions may well take a significant part in generating an active environment in EEL classrooms. It is believed that more opportunities will be created for students to be more involved, active, and able to understand the content being addressed more effectively. Yet, by looking at the textbooks being utilised （at a university context where the author teaches）, one can notice that student＇s culture （Eastern） is to a large extent missing in these textbooks, most of these books instead represent dominantly ＂Western＂ culture namely American and British cultures. This can deafly be depicted by topics discussed, pictures, clothing, names, and many other issues portrayed in these textbooks. This study is an attempt to challenge and problematize such domination of Western cultures portrayed in the content of English textbooks used in academic institutions not merely within Saudi Arabia but also extended to other countries and nations in the world.展开更多
