Teaching legal English for law students in China is difficult.For one thing,many Chinese law students have trouble moreor less in learning English,because the English language is not their mother tongue.For another,legal English differs a great dealfrom everyday English in many respects,including terminology,phrasing,linguistic structure,and linguistic conventions,whichmakes legal English teaching for law students in China by far harder.To solve difficulties undermining teaching legal English forlaw students in China,the author of this paper holds that in his or her actual legal English teaching,the teacher should boost lawstudents basic English teaching,expose them to cases study of specialized legal English terminology and linguistic structures andconventions.

The Lexical Approach and College English Teaching in China

Traditionally,language is considered to be a grammar vocabulary dichotomy system,and grammar and vocabulary seem to be independent of each other.This deep-rooted notion is particularly prevalent in Chinese English teaching and learning.Michael Lewis,the author of the Lexical Approach challenged the standard view of dividing language teaching into grammar and vocabulary.He believes that language is grammaticalised lexis,not lexicalized grammar,and lexis is the core of language learning while grammar is subordinate to it.This paper intends to explore its theoretical foundations and emphasize the great significance of the Lexical Approach to college English teaching in China.

China English and Its Implications for English Teaching in China

China English,as a member of the system of World Englishes,is a localized English variety developed in Chinese cultural contexts.It has aroused many scholars' interest since 1980's.English has become the dominant foreign language in China for almost 30 years and a series of problems have been found in the English teaching practice.The present situation of English teaching and the implications of China English for TEFL in China will be discussed from three aspects:teaching objective,teaching materials and teaching methods.It is quite necessary to enrich English teaching materials with China English,and to explore a set of appropriate and nativized teaching methods in view of the fact that English is a foreign language in China.

A Study of Chinese Students in the United States and Its Implication for English Teaching in China

Language acquisition is a system with four components： language development, academic development, cognitive development and sociocultural development. Based on this theory, Chinese students in the United States are studied from three perspectives： linguistically, culturally, and social psychologically. It indicated that, to help Chinese students develop their English performance and cultural appreciation in this diverse world, the profession of English teaching in China should cover a variety of domains, including linguistic, cultural and psychological input. Both American and Chinese education can benefit from this special group of Chinese students if they can be better understood, and used as a bridge between China and U. S. cultural and academic exchange. In the meantime, the mirror held up to the Chinese students in these perspectives reflects not only who they are but also who they can become.

Strategies to Improve Student-Student Interaction in Senior High English Teaching in Western China

Classroom teaching interaction has been the research topic these years.This paper focuses on student-student interaction based on empirical studies of classroom interaction,including questionnaires,interviews,and lesson observations,finding that there are some pair work activities,but there are few group work activities in senior high English teaching in Western China for some reasons,such as large classes,exam-oriented education,etc.This research also suggests some communicative activities for teachers to adopt,such as jigsaw,information gap,topic discussion,debate,using group work in reading,peer writing conference,etc.,aiming to cultivate students’collaborative learning and co-operative awareness.Teachers will change their teaching ideas and adopt flexible methods to increase students’talk time,using group work activities according to students’needs.By doing this,teachers can arouse students’motivation to learn and improve teaching and learning efficiency,and the goal is to promote their personal whole development.

What Users and Uses of Englishes are Represented in the English Textbooks in China

To explore the representation of users and uses of Englishes in the textbooks,a series of English textbooks for junior high school in China were examined in this study.Findings from analysis of representations of users and uses of Englishes were presented.The results show that China,the UK and the US are dominant in the representations of users.Outer circle countries and expanding countries(other than China)have no clear representations.

An Empirical Analysis of Learning and Teaching English as a Second Language： The Chinese Perspective

This research venture investigates the trends and motives behind the English learning as a second language. The author has used the Chinese binoculars to probe into the phenomenon of English learning and teaching. English language has become an international tool of communication and business. Professional and students at China's Mainland have been learning English since long but this trend has been increased in the recent years due to the wave of globalization and also owing to the enormous emerging economy of China. Internationalization of education and the quest of knowing the culture and civilizations have spurred the need for English learning. The authors have performed a questionnaire based research with the sample of 130 university students learning Chinese at different English learning institutes at Xi＇an, Shanxi, China. The analysis of the findings in this research highlights the reasons behind the growing trends of English learning and also describes the teaching methodology for effective language teaching in the Chinese perspective.

The Tentative Research on Cultural Identity in China English and on How to Teach Chinese Culture in College English Class

Inevitably involved in this process,China has experienced all upsurge of English learning. The author drawing support from the theories in sociolinguistics and intercultural communication, And analysis the sets of teaching materials used in college English class, for example, The New Horizon College English. The unbalanced proportion of Chinese culture input to western culture input in textbooks is one of the main reasons why Chinese college students are incompetent in expressing Chinese culture in English.

从一份问卷调查看"China English"的现状及其将来

英语作为世界语言已变得越来越重要,对于它的研究也已成为语言学领域的一个重要课题。随着中国入世和北京申奥成功,中国人学英语已呈现出前所未有的势头,对于中国英语(ChinaEnglish)这一也许是将来英语中的最大变体的研究也已引起国内外语界的关注。本文就WorldEnglishes和ChinaEnglish相关方面对1261名在校大学生进行了问卷调查。结果显示绝大部分学生对这两个概念知之甚少,这对中国的英语教学,尤其是中国入世后的英语教学有启示意义:让学生广泛接触世界英语;研究中国英语,让中国英语逐步规范并走入课堂。
